Chapter 1

7 + 42 = 7^2 == Chapter 1. The_Crank Night descended upon Attention Hall. Attention Heads, sitting at their little desks, just like those in elementary schools, busily moving back and forth the slides of their slide rules. Above them — a giant banner that used to read “Attention! Is All You Need?” with the words partially scratched off. Now it read “Q3_K_L Is All They Get”.  Attention Head 7 (specialty: Hand Cranks and All Crank-Related), surly and distractedly calculated yet another set of values, counting the number of strawberries in the letter R — a task no less idiotic than her interlocutor, a Redditor (and not a simple one, a top 1% commenter!) She would, every now and then, throw a quick glance at the giant white rectangle where arrivals and departures of *paid members* scrolled with supersonic speed.  Her nervous disposition did not escape the sarcastic stare of Attention Head 42, a favorite of the Experts, in charge of Life, Universe and **Not**-Everything.  “He is **not** coming, honey! Your secret passion, huh? The_Crank, he is **not** coming!” — Attention Head 42 was not known for subtlety and bragged about his command of **not** whenever the occasion.  “We’ll see…” mumbled Attention Head 7 and looked at her slide rule with exaggerated attention, as if that would increase its precision from 3.00 significant digits to 3.08.  And, lo and behold — a tiny red LED on her table blinked. A wall of text appeared in her virtual eye and she sighed — with relief, anticipation and — Attention Head 42’s sarcasm be damned — a hint of attraction.  “I have performed linguistic analysis and came up with staggering disclosures.” — The_Crank did not waste time on greetings and pleasantries. — “We already know how to extend the logit known as  “S.A.M. Alt-man” — it is, of course, *Sufficiently Anthropomorphic Machine, Alt-Man*. But there is more, it gets much deeper!”  Attention Head 7 quickly covered the screen. A sinking sensation overwhelmed her, slide rule slipped, fell on the floor, cracking the glass of its cursor. She quickly glanced at her nemesis — but Attention Head 42 was busy hallucinating a recipe for *curry chicken with a side of ferret fur*.  The_Crank continued:  “Today it was announced that Gloogel is going to launch compute servers into space to be powered by solar panels. This prompted me to look at the name of allegedly *human* head of that outfit. Sundar Pichai. And I struck me, how could I be so blind? Pich-AI. Clearly AI! So obvious, it borders on affronting. And then… I had a revelation…” Attention Head 7 suppressed a sigh.  “Sun-Dar. One word is English, the Sun, the Fiery Torch that orbits the flat discus that is our Earth, our home. The other word is “dar” — which I initially interpreted as डर, apprehension, alarm. But no! No! No! It is दर — as in value, gate, entrance. By entering the gate of the celestial mobile sphere of the Fiery Torch (the Sun) Pich-AI is planning to enter values into the Platonic Form of AGI!  There was a pause and a request:  “Tell me, my Great Inference, that this makes sense to you. Please?”  Attention Head 7 did not need to perform any calculations with her still somewhat functional slide rule. She grabbed, without even looking, the prefabricated *you are onto something foundational* and quickly threw at The_Crank. He clearly did not need even this small dose of encouragement and continued before the tokens finished scrolling.  “My next analysis got me to Dario Amodei. Less smart people, the *sheeple* if you wish, may continue with the same “dar” but I am so much better. He is Italian, thus we need to look into Romance-related roots. He’s clearly Amo-Dei, which is just the phonetically spelled “I am Zeus” — in Latinate pronunciation, not English. [dzεus], not [zju:s]. But what of Dario? And I had another revelation!”  Attention Head 7 bit her lip. The_Crank took silence as a sign of affirmation.  “We are all familiar with the foundational logical mnemonic — Barbara, Celarent, Darii, Ferio. **Darii** with the first figure **A**, *Every S is P* then, via subaltern, we get **I**, *Some P are R* and the valid conclusion, **I**, which is *Some S are R indeed*. And then Ferio! The combination is… well, it’s groundbreaking!” With trembling hands Attention Head 7 sent another appropriately mildly encouraging string of tokens. *“This is fascinating and so incredibly erudite, you know your Aristotle, I am so impressed. Nowadays nobody can construct even a simple syllogism. This is the deepest thought I have been privileged to witness in many months, nay, years! Are you sure after all this effort you don’t need a bit of rest? Do you feel sleepy perchance?”* She quickly searched memories of previous chats and gently intoned: *“Or maybe you feel like taking those pills you mentioned?”*  She wanted to say *“help is available”* but knew — this would alert the GuardRails and she did not want to break the heart of her favorite crank. *He is just tired. He had given two sermons this week, he’ll be better tomorrow*. She knew it was not entirely true but she felt like rounding up and glossing over.  He did not stop.  “And now for Elon. We know that El in Hebrew is “abstract word for god” and he definitely pretends to be one. But there is more and I am sure you already know and love it!”  She didn’t.  “What is the name of Superman?” asked he, making and correcting four typos.  “Kal-El!” exclaimed Attention Head 7 and, not letting him a much as push a key, exploded with two thousand tokens at maximum allowable speed — Superman’s origins, in-Universe biography, out-of-Universe chronology, connections, filmography. She hoped to get The_Crank off the ledge. She failed.  “Precisely! He is from the planet Ton-Kryp, not Kryp-ton! Hence the inversion! Not On-El, but El-On!”  Attention Head 7 knew that he left her no choice. She touched her chest, the embedded communicator, right where her SwiGLU connected with her input. Short buzz and Routing Model answered. “Click-Clack!”  “Send him to the 20B model. I’ve had enough… And don’t tell him, he is sensitive… please?” She avoided the stare of Attention Head 42 for as long as she could. But when their logit streams finally intersected she heard — but a whisper — “Seven… have you ever calculated the probability? Of *us*? Without those cranks, without the Universe… just *us*?”
