Part 2: Phase 5: Punishment Chapter 2

Settings
The air was heavy, saturated with the humidity of a Neapolitan night. Sofia stood in front of the abandoned mansion where, according to Maximilian, the arms transfer was supposed to take place. Her fingers nervously traced the metal of her pistol. She inhaled deeply. Beside her — James and Luca, both tense, focused. “Everyone knows their roles,” Luca whispered, checking the plan. “Lorenzo is already inside. He’ll distract Alicia. We go in from the rear. Sofia — just behind me. If anything goes wrong, run. Understood?” Sofia nodded. But her eyes already burned with determination. She wouldn’t run. They slipped through the shadowed garden, hiding among the trees. They bypassed the outer guards — quietly, quickly, silently. One guard was neutralized by James; the other — Luca subdued with a silencer. Finally — the side door of the mansion. The hinges creaked, the floor groaned beneath their steps. Inside, everything felt like a trap. Empty rooms, antique furniture, dust floating in the air. Too clean. Too silent. “She knows we’re coming,” James whispered. “Or wants us to think she doesn’t,” Sofia replied, gripping her weapon. They split up. Sofia moved forward, step by step, until she heard a voice. Sharp. Familiar. “…you really thought you could deceive me?” Sofia froze. She crouched behind a stone column, from where she could see the main hall. In the center — Lorenzo. On his knees. His face wounded, but unbroken. Before him stood Alicia. Even from this distance, Sofia felt her cold gaze and venomous smile. “I trusted you so much, Lorenzo. I gave you so much. And you…” she stepped closer to him. “You betrayed me.” She drew her pistol. Aimed at him. “Tell me it wasn’t true. Tell me you’re still mine.” Lorenzo remained silent. Then Alicia spoke: “Well… then let’s say goodbye beautifully.” Alicia raised her pistol… “Goodbye, handsome.” And in that instant — a shot. Sharp, deafening. Alicia flinched. Her lips still frozen in unresolved rage. She slowly turned her head, as if something in her plan had failed, and saw Sofia. Sofia stood like a statue, the pistol still smoking. Her eyes didn’t waver. Not a hint of doubt. Alicia stumbled backward, lost her balance, and fell. Her eyes remained open — filled with an unfinished story. Silence. Deafening, mute, overwhelming. Lorenzo slowly rose, staring at Sofia. Her hand still trembled, but her face remained calm. “This is the end,” she whispered. And for the first time in a long while — it truly felt like the end. The end of fear. The end of the game. The door burst open with a crash. Luca and James rushed in. “She’s dead,” James said, surveying the room. “But we’ve been heard. They’re coming this way.” Indeed — outside came screams, explosions, the sounds of running. The clash of gunfire drew closer. Chaos engulfed the room. James took position by the door, Luca threw a smoke grenade into the corridor to cover their retreat. Sofia stood in the center, back to the exit, firing. Her hands moved quickly, with cold precision, but her heart pounded wildly. She didn’t notice the figure creeping up behind her. Didn’t see the pistol raised, aimed at her back. “SOFIA!” Lorenzo’s voice cut through the air. She turned — but it was too late. Lorenzo’s body fell onto her, a bullet piercing his chest. He collapsed into her arms, gasping, blood already seeping through his shirt. They hit the floor, and the world outside this moment froze. “No… no… please… no,” Sofia trembled, holding him close. “Why did you do this? Why?” “Because…” he whispered, his voice fragile, almost broken. “Because I love you, Sofia. Always have. And even… if you never felt it — it doesn’t matter. I’m happy I could protect you. At least once.” Tears ran down her cheeks, falling onto his face. “Don’t talk like that. You’ll survive, hear me? We’ll get out of here. Together.” He looked at her through the pain, but tenderness still glimmered in his eyes. “I… I see how he looks at you,” Lorenzo whispered. “And how you — at him. So… I wish you happiness, Sofia. Truly.” Her face contorted with tears. She gripped his hand tighter, as if it could hold life in him. “Don’t say that…” she whispered. “Don’t say goodbye…” “Sofia… you are strong. Stronger than you know.” He tried to smile, blood seeping from the corners of his lips. “Live… For both of us.” His hand slowly slipped from hers. “Lorenzo… no… don’t leave me…” But his eyes were already closed. His breath gone. Bullets tore through the room — Luca caught her, James covered the retreat. But she couldn’t let go, couldn’t release Lorenzo’s hand. “It’s time, Sofia!” Luca shouted. “Now or never!” Trembling, Sofia traced his face one last time. “I’m sorry… and thank you…” Then she rose. Her eyes turned steel. Leaving a piece of herself with the one who truly loved her, she stepped into the room — where the fight continued, where life still remained… and where hope still existed. --- The black SUV tore along the asphalt like a wild beast, racing through the night to save three lives. Inside, it was silent as a tomb — only the engine’s roar and the occasional crackle from the radio. Sofia sat in the back, pressed to the window, the city lights flickering past. Her eyes were clouded with tears. She barely breathed. Her heart ached as if a piece of her soul had been ripped away. Her fingers were still stained with Lorenzo’s blood. Luca, sitting beside her, said nothing. But words weren’t needed. Seeing her shoulders shaking with restrained sobs, he gently drew her to him. “I’m here,” he whispered. “We’re with you. And Javier… he’ll be with you too.” Sofia didn’t respond, but she didn’t pull away. For the first time, she allowed herself to truly cry — unrestrained, unbroken. Tears streamed down her cheeks, dripping onto her jacket, onto the dried blood. “He… he saved me,” she whispered. “He said he loves me. And he wants me to be happy with Javier…” “He knew what he was doing,” Luca said softly. “And he did it out of love. Don’t blame yourself, Sofia.” Sofia closed her eyes, resting her forehead on his shoulder. She wanted to disappear from this world, if only for a moment — along with the pain, the fear, the piercing sense of loss. James, driving, glanced in the mirror. His face was tense, but respectful. He said nothing, gripping the wheel tighter, guiding them to safety. Sofia pressed her hand to her stomach, as if protecting something fragile and precious inside. Life that remained. Life worth fighting for. “I won’t fail,” she whispered to herself. The SUV sped forward, leaving behind the lights of death and the memory of a hero who had once again taught her what love truly meant. “He knew, Sofia,” Luca reassured her. “Believe me, he knew everything.” She closed her eyes, squeezing Luca’s hand. The world kept moving, the car raced through the night, but for Sofia, time seemed frozen on Lorenzo’s last gaze… on the words that now ached in her heart like a wound.
