Part 2: Phase 3: Secret Chapter 2

Settings
Twilight slowly enveloped Javier’s estate. Inside, it was quiet—only the faint ticking of antique clocks accentuated the tension in the air. Sofia sat at the large oak table, sheets spread before her with diagrams, notes, and dates. A cup of coffee sat nearby, long since cold. Javier entered the room with a tablet in his hands, his expression tense. “We’ve lost the shipment,” he began without preamble. “The one in Genoa. Someone tipped them off about the route. Alicia’s people took it.” Sofia silently raised an eyebrow, her gaze sharpening. “This is the second one in two weeks,” she added. “Someone is leaking information. And they’re doing it carefully.” Javier nodded and tossed the tablet onto the table. A map of tracked routes glowed on the screen. The routes had been recently changed—only insiders could know. A very narrow circle. “We discussed the plan only with advisors and a few key people,” Javier said, looking directly at Sofia. “One of them was Lorenzo.” Sofia rose from her chair and approached the window. Her voice was quiet, but tense. “He told me he was going to Palermo. Said Alicia suspected something, and he needed to take a pause.” “That doesn’t look too bad,” Javier agreed. “But we have to be cautious. If he’s truly a traitor…” “…then we’re all in danger,” she finished. “And I allowed him to get this close…” For a moment, silence fell. Both understood this could not go unanswered. “Call him,” Sofia said. “I want to look him in the eyes.” Javier took out his phone and sent a brief message. Twenty minutes later, a soft knock came at the office door. “That’s him,” Javier said shortly. Sofia turned toward the entrance. Her eyes were sharp, like blades. Lorenzo entered the room. “We need to talk,” Sofia said. He stopped mid-room. Sofia’s gaze was cold, sharp, and distrustful. Javier stood nearby, silently observing every movement. “What happened?” Lorenzo asked cautiously. “You went to Palermo at the worst possible moment. After the attack. After the leak.” She stood and slowly stepped closer. “I explained,” Lorenzo sighed. “Alicia started suspecting something. She’s looking at me… differently. If I had stayed, everything would have collapsed. She would have realized you’re alive. I had to step away. Take a pause.” “Take a pause?” Sofia’s voice trembled with emotion. “Lorenzo, we could have been killed! And you ‘took a pause’ and just disappeared, as if nothing happened?” “I was trying to protect the cover,” he replied softly. “Not myself. You. All of you.” “I thought I could trust you…” Her voice softened, but carried more pain than anger. “I thought you were different…” Lorenzo looked at her. His jaw clenched slightly, his eyes shining with hurt. He wanted to speak but stopped. Several seconds of silence felt like an eternity. “Alright,” he murmured quietly. “If you don’t trust me anymore… I understand.” He turned and left, leaving the room heavy with tension, like an unfinished sentence. Javier approached Sofia, lightly touching her shoulder. “If he’s lying—we’ll prove it.” Sofia silently nodded, staring at the empty doorway. --- The room was still. Only the dim light from outside filtered through the curtains, painting the walls with soft reflections. Javier lay on his back, holding Sofia against him. Her head rested on his chest, and in the darkness, only their steady breaths could be heard. “I can’t sleep,” Sofia whispered. Javier traced his fingers lightly along her back. “Because of Lorenzo?” Sofia was silent for a few seconds, then nodded. “I saw the way he looked at me…” her voice barely audible. “It wasn’t just disappointment. There was real pain. Genuine. Not faked.” “You think he’s telling the truth?” Javier asked gently. “I don’t know,” she sighed. “Everything looks like it’s him. But something inside me screams that it’s not. That he truly tried to protect us… just in his own way.” “I know this is hard for you,” Javier said, holding her closer. “But we’ll find the truth. Together. And if he’s innocent—we’ll vindicate him. But if he’s guilty…” His voice hardened. “…I’ll deal with him myself.” Sofia nodded. For the first time that day, she felt calm. Not because of answers—they weren’t there yet. But because of his presence. Sofia fell silent for a moment, staring into the darkness. “Do you think, Javier… if he really isn’t guilty… have we broken something between us?” Her voice was soft, slightly cracked. “These words, the suspicions… they hurt.” Javier turned onto his side to look her directly in the eyes. “Maybe,” he said sincerely. “But sometimes, even those you trust the most have to go through trials. If he’s genuine… he’ll come back. And forgive. If not—better that we found out sooner.” Sofia entwined her fingers with his, gripping lightly. “I’m so tired of suspicion… Everyone’s hiding something. Sometimes, I just want… to be.” “To be with whom?” Javier smiled faintly. “With you. Where nothing needs hiding.” He kissed her forehead. “We’re already there, Stellina. We just haven’t cleared all the ghosts yet.” Sofia closed her eyes. She wanted to believe he was right. And that when morning came, everything would be clearer. “Have you ever regretted it?” Sofia whispered, pressing close to him. “Regretted what?” “Getting involved with me. With all this madness, clan wars, lies. Maybe you could have had another life… a peaceful one.” Javier smiled softly—not mockingly, but tenderly. “I’ve lived in this madness for a long time, Sofia. But with you, it makes sense. Without you—just chaos. With you… it’s chaos I want to be in.” Sofia smiled sadly. “I just don’t want you ever to regret it. You deserve light, not darkness.” “I deserve you. And if the road to you passes through darkness—I’ll walk it. Without fear. Because you’re my light.” She was silent for a few seconds, then whispered: “I love you, Javier Rodriguez.” “I love you too, Sofia Reyland. And nothing will ever break us.” They lay together, quietly, holding each other, knowing storms still awaited… But tonight, there was only silence and warmth. Sofia pressed silently against Javier, hiding in his embrace as if it were the only place she could find peace. His hand rested gently on her waist, the other stroked her hair like a soothing melody. She could feel his heartbeat—slow, steady, calm. She wanted this moment to last forever. “Don’t let me go…” she whispered. “I wouldn’t dream of it,” he replied, kissing her forehead. She ran her fingers over his chest, feeling the warmth and strength that always made her feel safe. He held her tighter, their bodies moving in the same rhythm, in the same quiet. The window was open, letting in a gentle night breeze and distant city sounds, but nothing could disturb the harmony between them. Only the soft glow of a streetlamp filtered through the curtains, touching their faces. They stayed like that for a long time, saying nothing, simply feeling each other. Her hand lingered in his, fingers interlaced. His breathing evened out, and she finally closed her eyes, allowing herself to relax. Sofia fell asleep first—for the first time in a long while without fear or anxiety. Her face was peaceful, almost childlike. Javier watched her for a few more minutes, smiling softly. Then he kissed her cheek, hugged her tighter—and fell asleep beside her, in an embrace where there was no pain or past, only hope for the morning.
