Phase 5: Shadow. Chapter 1

Settings
In the morning, Sofia sat in her office, papers and plans for the fight against Alicia spread out before her. Luca, usually calm and serious, had been discussing attack strategies on the rival clan for half an hour. Sofia listened attentively, occasionally offering her own suggestions, but her thoughts kept returning to one thing — the danger hanging over her gang. All those tactical calculations seemed to lose their meaning when her mind was filled with one question: how would she survive all of this? "Are you sure this is the best plan?" Luca asked, returning to her personal analysis of the situation. "I'm sure," Sofia replied, but her gaze remained distant. Clearly, her mind was somewhere else. After a few moments of silence, Luca raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong with you? You seem so detached today." Sofia only sighed heavily. She gathered herself again and pushed her thoughts aside. "I just need a break," she said quietly. "That’s why I’m agreeing to this plan." Luca sensed her mood and, after a pause, said, "Don’t you think maybe you should rest a little? I know you’re strong, but even the strongest need a break sometimes." Sofia nodded. As soon as Luca left, she quickly typed a message to Javier: "Feel like meeting up?" Javier didn’t take long to reply. A few minutes later, her phone buzzed. "Sure. I’ll come pick you up. Wait for me." Sofia leaned back in her chair, setting the phone aside. Maybe this meeting was exactly what she needed right now. She stood up, got ready, and grabbed her jacket. As she stepped outside, she saw the dark silhouette of Javier’s car approaching in the distance. Javier stopped, and Sofia got into the passenger seat. As soon as she buckled up, Javier nodded and smiled. "You look absolutely incredible tonight," he said, glancing at her with genuine admiration. "And I have a feeling this evening will be something more than just a casual talk." Sofia smiled, turning slightly away. She didn’t know how to respond to such compliments — it felt unusual, yet pleasant. "Thank you, Javier," she said softly, watching the city fade away behind them. "I don’t even know what I would’ve done without you lately." She gazed out the window while Javier, noticing her calmness, kept driving. "I think we both help each other," he said without taking his eyes off the road. "But you know I’ll always be there when you need me." After a few minutes of silence, they arrived at the lake. The place looked perfect for leaving all their problems behind for a few hours — just the two of them, alone. As they stepped out of the car and walked toward the water, the sky darkened, and the stars began to appear. The calm evening air soothed her, yet there was a quiet magic in it. "This place..." Sofia began, turning to Javier. "It’s so peaceful — not like the city. When I was little, I used to dream of moments like this. I dreamed that one day everything would be perfect, without all these complicated things." Javier listened intently, his eyes fixed on her face. He couldn’t look away. "And how did you decide to tie your life to the mafia?" he asked. Sofia paused, her eyes turning serious. "It wasn’t an easy choice. As a child, I often watched my father — his life, his fight… I knew I couldn’t live without that world. It was my calling. No matter how much I tried to walk away, I always came back." Javier gently touched her hand, making her look into his eyes. His gaze was full of tenderness and admiration. "I know I don’t deserve you," he said quietly, his voice calm but filled with a hint of fear. "But I can’t hide it anymore." Sofia froze. His words surprised her, but deep inside, she felt the same. She smiled, looking into his eyes, and replied, "Maybe you’re just what I need — more than I can understand." Javier didn’t let her finish. He leaned closer, and in the next moment, their lips met in a gentle kiss. The world around them disappeared, leaving only the two of them under the starry sky. Time seemed to stop — and in that moment, everything felt possible. After the kiss, they sat down, wrapped in each other’s arms, as silence embraced them again. "I can’t imagine my life without you, Sofia," he said, running his fingers through her hair. "You’ve become part of everything that matters to me. And now... I don’t even know how I lived before you came into my life." Sofia looked at him, her heart racing. She couldn’t believe how quickly everything had happened, but the feeling was so real she didn’t want it to end. And no matter how hard things would become, this was the moment when they both felt they’d found something more than just an alliance or partnership — something they’d both been searching for but couldn’t put into words. When they kissed again, longer this time, Sofia’s heart beat in rhythm with Javier’s, and she realized she didn’t want to let go of this moment. Their fight wasn’t over, but what they had now was real. --- The evening came to an end, and they drove back home, lost in their thoughts. The car was filled with silence — meaningful, peaceful silence. Neither Sofia nor Javier wanted to ruin it with words. When they stopped by Sofia’s mansion, Javier got out to walk her to the door. She paused, then hugged him softly, breathing in his familiar scent. "Thank you for tonight," she whispered, not letting go immediately. Javier smiled and held her a little longer, as if trying to memorize the feeling. "Always happy to be by your side," he said. Before stepping inside, Sofia rose on her toes and kissed his cheek gently. "Good night, Javier," she whispered. Javier watched her go in and only exhaled once the door closed behind her. Running his hand through his hair, he murmured, "Good night, Sofia," into the quiet night. He sat in the car for a few minutes, not rushing to leave. A storm of emotions raged inside him — and he knew one thing: everything had changed. --- Sofia entered the mansion, closed the door, and leaned her back against it, taking a deep breath. Her heart was still beating faster than usual. She slowly climbed to her room, changed into something comfortable, and lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep wouldn’t come. Her phone buzzed softly on the nightstand. She reached for it and saw a message from Javier: "If only time could stop… Because every second with you feels priceless." She smiled, her finger gliding across the screen. She didn’t even have to think long before replying: "But time has no power over what’s real." Almost immediately, his reply appeared: "Then I hope this night feels endless for us." Sofia lay on her side, clutching the phone close to her chest, feeling warmth from his words. Somewhere across the city, Javier was also lying in the dark, thinking only about her. That night, neither Sofia nor Javier could fall asleep.
