Phase 3: Crossroads. Chapter 1

Javier arrived at Sofia’s estate to discuss an important purchase for their newly allied clans. It was meant to be a strategic decision for the future of their partnership, and despite all the changes already unfolding, Sofia—as always—was willing to risk everything. She was serious and focused, though their alliance was still in its infancy.
When Javier entered the mansion, he immediately sensed that something was wrong. Sofia sat in her office with a grave expression.
— What happened? — Javier asked with concern, stepping closer.
Sofia didn’t answer right away. She reached under the desk, took out a letter, and placed it in front of him. The paper’s edges were slightly burned, and it bore an old postal stamp, as if it had been lying somewhere forgotten for a long time.
Javier looked at her, then unfolded the letter. Each word he read sent a chill down his spine.
— It’s a threat from Alicia Rosetto, — Sofia said quietly as Javier froze, his eyes still fixed on the letter. — She’s treated me like a rival for a long time, but this time she’s crossed the line.
Javier looked up from the letter.
— I don’t understand… who is she?
Sofia sighed, her gaze growing even more serious. She placed her hands on the desk, locking eyes with him.
— Alicia was a donna long before I took over the Order of Lightning. She’s powerful and ruthless. She’s always seen me as a minor obstacle—one that needed to be erased to secure her rule. Remember the old disputes between our clans? That was her doing. And this letter... is her next move. She’s not going to stop.
Javier’s jaw tightened as he glanced back at the letter. The tension in the room grew heavy.
— She means business, — he said grimly. — And I can see this isn’t just about territory. It’s a war for power and control.
Sofia nodded.
— She wants to bring me to my knees, — she said without lifting her gaze. — But that won’t happen. If she thinks I’ll surrender, she’s mistaken.
Javier studied her, realizing how personal this conflict was for her. He didn’t know all the details of her past, but he could see that this was about more than business or clan rivalry — it was about her identity, her strength, her place in this world.
— You’re not alone in this, — Javier said, stepping closer. — We’ve united our forces. Now we have to prove that we won’t let her take our territory or control our moves.
Sofia looked at him, a spark of determination lighting in her eyes.
— We have to move carefully, — she said quietly but firmly. — Alicia won’t stop at threats. She always strikes in ways that shock everyone. But we’ll find her weakness. We just have to be ready for anything.
Javier nodded, his gaze locked on hers. He understood — her words weren’t just strategy; they were part of her inner battle.
— I understand. And we’ll be ready for every step she takes. We’ll fight together.
Sofia took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She still wasn’t used to someone being this loyal, this close to her struggle.
— This isn’t just business, Javier. It’s more than a war between clans. Alicia won’t stop until she takes everything. Only one of us will win… the other won’t survive.
She looked at the letter again, and her heart filled with cold resolve.
— But I won’t let her win, — she whispered.
Javier stepped closer, his gaze soft but steady.
— And I’ll be there. Let me be part of this. You’re not alone.
Those words meant more than just strategy or support. Sofia didn’t quite understand it, but something in her heart stirred — an awareness that with Javier beside her, she could withstand even the fiercest storms.
— Then we’ll do this, — she said, lifting her head. — We can’t let Alicia win. But this won’t be our fight alone. We’ll need the strength of both clans.
Javier frowned, his expression darkening with focus.
— We’ll bring them in. And together, we’ll win.
They stood in silence for a moment, their eyes locked. With every passing second, an invisible bond grew stronger between them — a connection forged not just by alliance, but by something far deeper.
— So, — Sofia said finally, pulling out a new document from her drawer, — we need a plan.
Javier studied her face. He was ready for war, yet couldn’t shake the feeling that this was no longer just a battle between two clans, but a struggle for dominance — for who would rule this world.
— She won’t see it coming, — he said. — And when she realizes we’ve outplayed her, it’ll be too late.
Sofia nodded slightly, feeling the weight of the coming war settle on her shoulders. But now, she wasn’t alone — and that gave her strength.
— We need to act.
She paused, thinking over Javier’s words. She had never been one for reckless moves, preferring precision and patience — but there was something in his tone that made her listen.
— You mean… — she began, but Javier interrupted gently, seeing that she understood.
— Yes. Instead of defending, we strike first. If Alicia wants to buy something, we buy it before she does. Take everything she’s planning right out from under her nose. Catch her off guard. Force her to make mistakes — give us the upper hand before she even realizes it.
Sofia looked at him, a glint of determination flickering in her eyes. It was an unorthodox idea, but for once, she felt willing to take the risk.
— Not a bad idea, — she said slowly. — But what exactly do we take from her?
— Weapons, — Javier replied without hesitation. — The ones she’s been trying to get for months. This is our chance. We take them, and she’s left without an arsenal — without power. She won’t be able to recover from that.
Sofia nodded, understanding how critical this move would be. If they could pull this off, Alicia would be weakened beyond repair.
— Alright. We strike first. If it works, it’ll be a blow she never saw coming.
Javier smiled faintly, impressed by how quickly she adapted.
— Then we just need to decide who’ll lead the operation.
Without hesitation, Sofia answered:
— I will. This is my war with Alicia. And I want her to know exactly who’s behind her downfall.
Javier’s smile grew, proud of her resolve.
— Then I’ll be with you when it’s time to move.
Sofia fell silent for a few seconds, watching him. He stood close, observing her carefully — until she finally spoke again.
— Javier… — she said softly, pausing for a heartbeat.
— What is it? — he asked, leaning in, caught off guard by her tone.
Sofia took a deep breath, and though her words were quiet, they carried a deep sincerity.
— Thank you. For everything. For being here… for supporting me. I don’t know what I’d do without you right now. — She met his eyes, her voice steady but warm.
Javier looked at her — and suddenly felt something he couldn’t name. A tightness in his chest, a quiet heat spreading inside. Her words and her gaze stirred something deep within him.
He wasn’t a man prone to sentiment, but at that moment, when she thanked him, he realized she meant more to him than just a partner in battle. Her presence, her strength — they had become part of his world. And though he couldn’t yet define it, he knew his feelings for her had already gone beyond cold alliance.
His voice was calm again, but with a new depth to it.
— You don’t need to thank me, Sofia. I’ll always be here.
Sofia gave a faint nod, a soft smile touching her lips.
— That truly means a lot to me, — she said.
The silence that followed spoke louder than words. Between them, there was understanding — and something more. Something unspoken, but real.
