Chapter 38

Janelle Stone managed to blend in with the homeless and slowly work her way south and across the Mexican border. She found work as a housekeeper in a cheap, rundown motel and altered her appearance. Fortunately for her, she earned enough money relatively quickly for her medications, something that was easier to get in Mexico. As soon as she had enough cash for a one-way ticket to Montenegro, that’s where she headed. Only then did the real relief come.
She was thrilled to find that her tiny home in the woods was still in good standing. It was all paid for, and no one else had the key to it, so all she had to do was catch up on some late utility bills.
She emailed Bronwyn and told her what happened, figuring she’d heard about it on the news. She asked if her sister had tipped off the police, but she insisted she hadn’t. Janelle signed off with her sister, none the wiser, and told her she loved her and hoped she would be well cared for in the end due to her cancer—which the sister didn’t have, of course—but that she could no longer email her.
As expected, Bronwyn tried to keep in touch, but Janelle ignored all the messages.
As for Boris and Lauren, they were beyond angry and embarrassed. However, Janelle wouldn’t get the benefit of having Lauren forced to live the rest of her life with the horrible memories she’d given her because she really did have cancer, and she would die of ovarian cancer the following year.
Boris became so angry and fell into a deep depression that he contemplated suicide numerous times. But he couldn’t off himself. He had a mission to accomplish, and he was going to accomplish it one way or another, if it was the last thing he did.
He had to find and kill Janelle Stone.
