Chapter 11

Settings
Two days later, on a hot, dry, sunny Saturday afternoon, Sabrina decided it was time to phone Teresa and set her plans into motion. It had been nearly a week since Carly’s murder. When Teresa answered her ringing phone to find Sabrina on the other end, she was thrilled as well as a bit surprised. She had begun to worry that she’d never win Sabrina over after all. Still, she tried her best to sound nonchalant. Sabrina noted her blasé attitude, figuring that Teresa believed she could get away with anything and fool anyone she wanted to. “How’ve you been, Sabrina?” asked Teresa. “It’s tough at times, but I’m surviving.” “Hanging in there, huh?” “Uh-huh.” A brief pause passed, then, “Teresa, I was wondering if I could come by and pick you up, say, in an hour?” “Sure, that’d be great.” “I thought maybe we could stop and get a bite to eat, then I could take you over to my place,” said Sabrina, just dying to see how Teresa would react to being in the very place where she’d committed her heinous deed. Once the arrangements were made, Sabrina threw on a pair of light purple shorts and a matching short-sleeved top with pink and blue tulips embroidered on the front. She did her makeup as usual, put on gold hoop earrings, and wore her usual array of gold and silver chain necklaces. She had considered wearing the wire, but in the end, she felt it’d be too soon. If she was going to gain Teresa’s trust and confession, it certainly wouldn’t be overnight. Teresa may have been cruel, selfish, evil, and compassionless, but she wasn’t stupid. Perhaps this was why her record had come up empty when it had been checked. “I don’t believe it!” Teresa sang out loud to herself. “Finally. Finally, she’s mine! All mine forever and always. Teresa and Sabrina, Sabrina and Teresa, forever in true love.” She wished she had time to run over and tell Sasha, but she and Kate wouldn’t be home—they were away for the weekend in Las Vegas. Sabrina had asked that she meet her just outside the complex entrance. The reason, she had explained, was that management might frown upon her for picking up a resident since she worked there. After a few minutes, the gold compact car Sabrina said she’d be driving pulled up alongside the curb. Teresa opened the door and got inside the comfortable car, which smelled of coconut. “Hi,” she said with a bright smile. “You look nice.” “You do, too,” said Sabrina, though she really thought she looked like a little whore in her cheap little phony black leather skirt, skimpy red, silver-studded tube top, and caked-on makeup. Her dangling earrings grazed her bare shoulders. Either way, no matter how Teresa dressed, she could never have an ounce of feelings for her. None that were positive, that was, anyway. Teresa glanced over at her prized catch, admiring the long, smooth, supple yet strong-looking legs she was now seeing most of for the first time. “You look just as hot in civilian clothes as you do in uniform.” “Thanks,” Sabrina said with a quick smile. It was then that she noticed healing scratch marks on Teresa’s face. “What happened to you? Did you get in a fight?” “No,” said Teresa with a chuckle. “Well, actually, yes, I sort of did.” Sabrina glanced at her, then back at the road. “I got into a little squabble with a nasty cat.” “A nasty cat?” “Yeah. It came to my door, and I thought I’d be nice and give it a little something to eat. After it ate, I couldn’t shoo the damn thing out of the place so easily, so I went to pick it up. That’s when it got me.” “Where would you like to eat?” Sabrina asked, changing the subject. “Wherever.” They ended up at Denny’s. Sabrina would be damned if she’d take Teresa to a fancier restaurant and spend that much more money on the girl. Just spending a few bucks was enough to make her feel rather ill. Once settled in their booth, Teresa shivered. “They really have the AC cranked up in here.” “Should’ve worn more clothes,” Sabrina said. Teresa almost felt insulted. “Yeah, perhaps.” Sabrina picked up the menu. There was something about Sabrina that disturbed Teresa, though she couldn’t quite put a finger on it. It was almost as if she didn’t seem all that into being with her. Sure she is, Teresa tried to console herself. She’s just still getting over that damn Carly. After all, why would she have called if she wasn’t interested? She wants me every bit as much as I want her. Teresa concentrated on her own menu. “What do you think I should have?” she asked. “Whatever you want,” Sabrina said with a smile, trying to appear as into their little date as Teresa obviously was. Teresa was, in fact, savoring every second of it. In the end, Sabrina chose a burger and fries, while Teresa chose the steak and shrimp dinner. Figures she had to pick the most expensive thing on the menu, Sabrina thought. However, whatever it took to catch a killer—Carly’s killer—she would simply have to do and deal with it. After the waitress took their orders, Teresa leaned forward. “So tell me, Sabrina, what exactly happened, if you don’t mind my asking?” Sabrina felt her face redden. “I don’t want to get into it,” she said, and this was true. It was also true that as an FBI agent, it was best not to disclose too many details. That way, if a confession was ever made, they’d have a better chance of separating the crackpots from the real killer, for only the real killer would know certain details. Let the suspect fill in the blanks, her father had advised her. “I’m sorry,” said Teresa, “I didn’t mean to make you sad.” Said with more annoyance than empathy, thought Sabrina. “It’s ok,” she said instead. “What about the police, though? Any leads?” “Actually, yes. We’re suspecting a neighbor who was a peeping Tom of sorts,” she lied. Make the suspect think they’re not suspects, her father had suggested. This tends to break them down and trip them up easier if they think the spotlight isn’t on them. “That’s good.” The two didn’t talk much throughout the meal. Once back on the road, Sabrina tried to assure Teresa that her state of mind was only due to her recent loss. “I don’t want you to think it’s you, Teresa, or that you’re not good company.” “Oh, I know that,” said a confident Teresa. “I understand.” Conceited bitch, thought Sabrina. A few minutes later, they pulled up in Sabrina’s driveway. “This is it,” said Sabrina. “It’s nice,” said Teresa. “Looks different in the daylight.” Date number one, and you’ve already slipped, thought Sabrina, wondering if perhaps it wasn’t too soon to be wired after all. She pretended not to hear Teresa’s comment as she pulled the car into the attached garage. Doing her best to act like she was seeing it for the first time, Teresa complimented Sabrina on the house during the quick tour she was given. “You own this?” “Yup,” said Sabrina, as Teresa noticed a large, framed photo of Sabrina and Carly on the bedside nightstand. “That’s Carly?” “Uh-huh,” said Sabrina, wanting to scream, you know damn well it’s Carly! while she choked the life right out of her, much in the way she had with Carly. “She’s pretty. You guys get along well?” Sabrina tried to keep her gaze steady. “Most of the time, but to tell you the truth,” she lied, “we weren’t doing too well in the end there.” “Why is that?” Nosy bitch! “Because I met someone else.” For a minute, it felt like the food Teresa had eaten had bounced up into her throat. “Who?” she dared ask. “You,” Sabrina said before quickly looking away and exiting the bedroom with Teresa close at her heels. “Oh, how sweet!” Teresa cooed with delight. “Let’s just take it slow, though, ok? I really do need some time, Teresa. I want you, but I can’t jump from one relationship to another overnight, no matter how the previous one ended and no matter how well you and I get along.” “Ok. I’ve got all the time in the world for you, babe,” said Teresa, throwing herself up against Sabrina and wrapping her arms around her. The feeling made Sabrina’s skin crawl. She gently pulled free of Teresa’s possessive grip and headed for the back door. Teresa had done a fine acting job, never appearing to behave differently in any particular room. “What’s out back?” asked Teresa just as Sabrina yanked open the blinds and pulled the sliding glass door open. “Come on out and see.” “Wow!” exclaimed Teresa. “You’ve got a pool?” Sabrina nodded as Teresa gazed out at the backyard, enclosed and made more private by a stuccoed block wall. The yard wasn’t too small, nor was it overly spacious. Part of the yard was grassy, and the other part was where the pool was. “What’s behind the little wooden fence?” asked Teresa, “and what’s in the alley back there?” “Well, the fence is where the pool pump is, and there are dumpsters along the alleyway,” said Sabrina as she leaned against one of the patio’s supports. “I should’ve brought my bathing suit.” “Next time,” said Sabrina. “We could always go skinny-dipping,” Teresa suggested with a wink. Sabrina thought about the idea. She didn’t want to do anything to drive Teresa away—not that she felt that’d be easy to do anyway—but she also couldn’t stand the thought of swimming in the nude with this girl. Feeding her was one thing, but skinny-dipping with her? “What do you think?” asked a hopeful Teresa. “How about we compromise? I don’t exactly feel comfortable swimming naked, so why don’t I just dangle my feet over the edge and let you do the skinny-dipping?” Teresa was a little disappointed by the proposal. After all, that wouldn’t be very romantic—one swimming in her birthday suit while the other sat clothed with nothing more than their feet in the water. Yet it was better than nothing at all, so Teresa agreed and let Sabrina go inside to fetch her a towel. When she returned, she was already naked in the water, which was cool and refreshing against the blistering sun. “I’ll put this by the pool’s edge along with your clothes,” Sabrina said. “Ok, thanks.” Sabrina, now barefoot, stepped down onto the pool’s top step and let the cool water soothe her feet as she sat on the warm concrete. She watched Teresa slither through the water with such ease and grace. Her flaming red hair shone in the brilliant sunlight. Depending on the angle, there were times she got an excellent view of Teresa’s body. Though she hated to admit it, she realized that if ever there was a body as close to perfect as it could get, it belonged to this girl, whom Sabrina believed was one very sick individual. She wouldn’t let herself feel sorry for her, though. No, instead she’d do everything she could to coax and document the truth from the girl’s own lips and see to it that she not only got the help she needed but was also punished for her crime. Teresa swam over to Sabrina. It amazed Teresa how one could be so beautiful while appearing so sorrowful. She rose up in the shallow water, now exposed down to her belly button. Sabrina did everything she could to avoid noticing her exquisite beauty—the beauty that made her sweet Carly seem almost plain. She tore her eyes from the firm breasts with erect pink nipples, the flat, firm tummy, and sensual red lips that matched the shiny red hair. Teresa reached out for one of Sabrina’s hands. Sabrina gazed down at Teresa’s long, blood-red fingernails. Suddenly, it felt as though Teresa, who was gazing intently into Sabrina’s eyes, was placing a spell on her, weakening her, molding her into what she wanted her to be. Sabrina shivered with as much lust as discomfort, dumbfounded that she could even feel the slightest bit of desire for this girl—the girl who had stalked her and killed her greatest love. How could she feel this way, and how dare she! “Teresa I—,” Sabrina mumbled in protest. “Shhh, it’s ok. I’m here for you. I’ll take care of you,” said Teresa in a hypnotically soothing voice that made Sabrina feel as if she were falling into a trance. “Just relax and trust me. Take off your clothes.” Seemingly against her will and as if an invisible force were moving her limbs, Sabrina slowly shucked her clothes. With her shorts, top, bra, and panties now lying next to Teresa’s scanty clothes, she waded into the water with Teresa. Teresa marveled at the body coming towards hers. Sabrina’s smooth, creamy skin and slightly muscular body sent waves of ecstasy flooding through her. She trembled with desire. “Come to me, sweet Sabrina, come to me,” she uttered in a low, husky voice. Sabrina was now just inches away. “The moment has finally come. Destiny has united us at last,” said Teresa, pulling Sabrina’s lips towards hers. They kissed gently at first, then more passionately. Ignoring the tension and hesitancy in Sabrina, Teresa explored her small, pert breasts, then dipped her hands below the water to feel her firm butt. She could feel the heat mounting between her legs despite the cool water. She wrapped a leg around Sabrina and rubbed herself against her in slow, sensual movements. “Oh, please, please touch me,” Teresa urged, breathing heavily. She felt between Sabrina’s legs. At that moment, whatever magnetic force had been drawing Sabrina towards Teresa seemed to die as suddenly as it had begun. “Stop!” she cried, pushing Teresa back by the shoulders. Teresa fell back with a splash. “Hey! What did you do that for? What’s wrong?” “I’m not ready for this. Stop manipulating me, Teresa.” “But I’m not. You undressed and came to me on your own.” Sabrina glared at Teresa. She wanted to scream at her and shake her so hard her neck would snap, but she didn’t. Not as long as she wanted to get her to implicate herself in Carly’s murder. Therefore, she needed to keep her emotions under control and remain cool. Breathing deeply, she apologized for being so moody. “Oh, it’s ok,” said Teresa with a smile, climbing out of the pool after Sabrina. “In no time at all, you’ll be smiling all the time.” Don’t count on it, thought Sabrina as she quickly dressed. Teresa took her time putting on her clothes, hoping Sabrina would change her mind and want to finish what they started in the pool. Much to her disappointment, however, Sabrina didn’t change her mind. “But you are attracted to me?” Teresa asked on the way back to her place. “Yes, Teresa, very much so. I’m sorry if this isn’t going a little faster for you. The least I can do is pick you up again tomorrow.” Teresa beamed. “Sure.” “Same time?” “Absolutely.”
