Chapter 4

Settings
Renee was excited to move into the beautiful apartment. She looked forward to taking care of Melanie and seeing how far the doctor wanted things to go. During her first week there, she started to believe she had misread the doctor because she wasn't seeing any signs to suggest she was even remotely interested in her other than as a nanny to her daughter. Nonetheless, they fell into a comfortable routine. Renee continued to write for some blogs during the daytime, and then she picked Melanie up from school at 2:30. They would hang out together until 5:30 when Deanne would return from work. “So how was your day today?” Deanne asked as she poured them a glass of wine after Melanie was tucked in for the night. In casual clothes, she settled onto the couch next to Renee. She yanked the red cloth elastic out of her hair and tossed it on the gold-trimmed glass table in front of the couch. Renee took a sip of her merlot and said, “It was typical but good.” “What did you do today before you picked up Melanie?” “The usual. Worked on the blogs for the most part, but I did take a break for an hour or two to go out walking. Since you didn't have any laundry for me to do today, I just tidied up and made dinner.” “Those were damn good pork chops, too. You're an awesome cook and so far, you seem to be doing a great job as a nanny as well.” Renee smiled appreciatively. “So,” the doctor said, patting her playfully, “any romantic plans?” “Yeah, in my imagination,” said Renee with a roll of her eyes. “You're still pretty young.” “And you're even younger.” The doctor looked as if to say, “Yeah, I know.” “Any men have their eye on the good doc? Or women?” The doctor looked at her. “Women, huh?” “Well, this isn't exactly the Dark Ages, but I guess if that sort of thing isn't one’s cup of tea, then it doesn't matter.” “Has it ever been your cup of tea?” “It might have.” The ENT smiled and raised her eyebrows as if surprised to learn this. “It's been a long time and I was very faithful to my husband. Honestly, though, I'm not looking for anyone of any gender, but I'm not closed to the possibility either. I'm okay with whatever happens. It's okay if I meet someone and it's also okay if I don't.” A moment of silence went by and then Deanne's cell phone chimed. She answered the call and a second later, she said she was on her way. Renee knew right away that she had to take care of a medical emergency. Deanne looked at Renee and said, “Sorry to cut our little chat short but part of being a doctor means being on-call, and an emergency came up, so I have to get over to San Juan Medical Center ASAP.” “No problem,” Renee said with understanding. She was getting a little awkward with how the conversation was going anyway. Renee liked the idea of flirting with just about anyone but if the wrong person got too close, it made her uncomfortable. But was the doctor the “wrong” person? Well, she was, and she wasn’t. The doctor quickly changed her clothes and stepped into her tan color flats. She hugged Renee and said, “Sleep well if you're asleep before I get back.” Then she kissed her on the cheek. A warm feeling came over Renee. Even if she wasn't nearly as attractive as the lovely woman next door, it must have meant something to her to make her feel as good as she did at the moment. “Okay, Doc. See you later.” The doctor slipped out the door and Renee tidied up the apartment before slipping into her room next to Melanie's. She was just about to make herself comfortable when she remembered something. “Shit,” she muttered under her breath. She had forgotten the mail. But should she really go down to the mailboxes and leave Melanie alone in the apartment? Sure, she decided a few seconds later. It would only take a minute and she would be sure to lock the apartment door while she went downstairs. She was just returning on the elevator a few minutes later when the doors parted and there she was… Tall, dark and sexy as hell. “Aisha,” said Renee with a smile. Aisha smiled widely, showing her perfect teeth. “Well, hello there. It's Renee, right?” Renee nodded. “That's me.” “What are you up to tonight, hun?” “Well, the doctor ran out on an emergency call and I realized that I forgot to run down and grab the mail. Got to get back to the apartment in case Melanie wakes up.” “Oh, okay.” “What are you doing tonight?” “On my way to see a friend.” Renee looked into Aisha’s dark, sexy eyes and felt her cheeks warming. “Hope to catch you again sometime soon,” she said with a smile as she crossed the hall and headed toward her door. “Yeah, I'd like that. Maybe we can chat or go out or something.” “Looking forward to it,” Renee said, pressing the numerical code in the door to unlock it. “My middle name is Kelly and my last name is Mitchell. Look me up on Facebook.” Renee stepped into the apartment, then closed and leaned against the door with a big grin on her face. Her encounter with Aisha definitely had more of an effect on her than the kiss from Deanne.
