Chapter 20

Settings
Tuesday, May 6 Kya was introduced to both Mary and Andy at the same time. Andy was visiting Mary at her place when we came to pick up some of my belongings. On the way home, we stopped at the post office where Kya picked up her mail and I mailed out a letter to Rosa, which I had typed in Spanish. Kya didn’t seem thrilled with the idea of me writing to her, but I chose to do so nonetheless and said nothing about it. I had already filled out a card directing my mail to the box Kya used. Mary, Andy, and I spoke later on via three-way. “She is good looking,” Andy agreed. “Way hot. She’s got nice long legs and a nice ass, but there’s something about her that bugs me. Something’s a little off.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “I don’t know. I can’t put my finger on it, but something’s not quite right and I get the feeling you’re making a huge mistake. Give it at least a few months before you go moving in with her.” “No, my mind is made up and I’m sure of how I feel and what I want. Besides, if worse came to worst, I could always leave.” “I think she’s wonderful,” piped in Mary. “She’ll be really good for Sativa and they’ll get along just fine and live happily ever after.” “Spoken like a true author,” I said. Neither of their reactions toward Kya surprised me. Mary always assumed the best in people and automatically gave them the benefit of the doubt, while Andy didn’t trust a soul, always assuming the worst in people unless time proved a particular individual was okay. “Now that I’m all moved in,” I later told Kya as we sat at the table eating the dinner I’d cooked of roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and broccoli florets, “I’ll begin making dolls to contribute to some of the expenses.” “You can do that if you want, but you need not give me any money. I can support us just fine and would be more than happy to be the breadwinner in this happy little family.” “Oh, I know you can take care of things, Kya, I just thought it was only fair. With the way society bashes homemakers these days, you wouldn’t feel used?” “Nope,” she said with a smile as she helped herself to another serving of potatoes. “You are one fine cook, little lady.” “Thanks,” I said, beaming. “How do you make the dolls and where do you sell them?” “I get kits, assemble them, then bring them to consignment shops.” “Make good money?” “Just average. I can’t put the things together fast enough to make a significant amount of money.” Kya laughed. “I’m sure you try your best, though.” I nodded. “It’s fun to do.” Later that night, Kya taught me some basic exercises using the Bowflex. I was amazed at how much she could lift compared to what I could lift. “You’ll get there,” she encouraged. “Maybe not as strong as I am, but you’ll get stronger than you are now.” Then I took the rats out of their cage one at a time. She wouldn’t hold them, but she patted their heads for a quick second. “Gosh, I never thought I’d touch a rat! What are their names?” she asked. “The black and white one is Oreo and the brown one’s Little Fella.” “I’ll admit the black and white one’s got some pretty cool markings.” I finally got to see Kya without her perfectly applied makeup. She thought it made her look plain, but I still thought she was beautiful. Makeup always helped one’s looks, but she looked just fine without it nonetheless. Life went on and all was great. I was living a fairytale life that most people could only dream of. I had a beautiful woman who loved me and now a beautiful home as well. What more could I ask for? We fell into a comfortable routine. Kya worked during the daytime, mostly in her office, and I used the other spare bedroom to assemble dolls in. I cooked and cleaned and she managed the money. We were like your traditional couple, with me as the wife and her as the husband. She didn’t mind the fact that I didn’t have a car and didn’t like driving. She was very accepting of my limitations, which made me love her all the more. She happily let me decorate and set up things in the house as I pleased. She was impressed with just how realistic-looking most of my dolls were. “No wonder they’re so expensive,” she said. At night we’d either read together, watch TV, or hang outside if it wasn’t too hot. She had taught me to be wary of rattlesnakes and explained to me the various wildlife in the area. The prairie dogs, also known as ground squirrels, were my favorites. They were so cute. I fed them every day, and every day they became braver, daring to get closer and closer to me. At night the moon shone brightly when it was full, making the outside appear to be lit by streetlights when in fact there were none around for miles. I also used Kya’s computer for my journal, which she’d constantly ask to read. She knew I kept it encrypted to protect it from any online hackers. I really didn’t like sharing my private journal with anyone, even her, but nonetheless, I’d read her a page or two every now and then, depicting our wonderful times together both in and out of bed. I met her friends Kelly and Brianne when we went over to their house to swim in their pool one day. They looked more like what was expected of a lesbian couple. Both had very short hair and wore little to no makeup. Kya held me snugly against her in the corner of the pool at one point when Kelly went inside to use the phone and Brianne went to use the bathroom. “You’re the best one yet,” she told me. “There’s never been anyone that even comes close to comparing to you. You’re the special one.” “How sweet,” I said. “Just how many others were there anyway?” “Not too many.”
