Chapter 1

Yang laid on the pews one night after choir practice, her eyes drooping. The past week had been pretty hard for her. Summer’s birthday always brought up the memory of her not being there and it brought a drunk Qrow along with it as well. She hated that he was always drunk around Summer’s birthday which was so close to Ruby’s. They were about a week apart. Seeing Qrow drunk always made her sad and it was all the worse when he and Taiyang got into a shouting match about the entire issue. She didn’t care about Taiyang anymore, but still. She just… It was all so hard.
It took every bit of her self-control to not burst into tears. The First Chapel of Verana was really her safe place when the house wasn’t. She hadn’t brought Ruby with her as Ruby would be upset by the change in routine. It was best to just leave her at home like she always did. It was hard when so much of the world felt against them. Taiyang didn’t care about them and hadn’t since Summer’s death, Qrow was too worried about being drunk to be present in their lives… It really left Yang and Ruby on their own. It sucked so much. She hated it all.
A shadow floated in front of Yang and she felt something brush over the top of her head. Her eyes snapped open and her head jerked up. A gauzy, shadowed form stood in front of her for a brief moment before vanishing. However, the sensation of a hand brushing through her hair didn’t. A wave of gentle energy rolled over her, making her calm. She closed her eyes and leaned into it.
This was probably the chapel’s ghost… She had heard of it before. The ghost helped out in all sorts of ways, especially the documents room. Normally she didn’t like people touching her hair without permission but tonight… Just tonight…she’d allow it. She had so much resting on her shoulders and nobody to turn to. Even a little bit of comfort was welcome…
