Chapter 1

Weiss huddled under her blankets as she felt the presences filling the room. She had known for a long time Schnee manor was haunted, but the ghosts rarely ever botheredherpersonally. They seemed to be focused around President Jacques. He had hired ghost hunters, exorcists, and others, but none seemed to be able to get rid of the ghosts. She didn’t know why they haunted the manor, but they were definitely persistent. She constantly heard whispers, felt cold spots, and the hair on the back of her neck constantly standing up. They normally didn’t seem to care about bothering her, but tonight was different for some reason.
Their eerie laughter echoed off the walls of her room, a cold, almost evil noise. They spoke in hushed whispers, their voices distorted as if through space and time. She didn’t understand why they bothered her. All she was doing was trying to sleep. But no, they bothered her tonight for some reason. She truly wished that they would leave so she could sleep. She had planned to spend tonight working with her Semblance again, but she couldn’t, not with these ghosts swishing about her room and bothering her.
She huddled until she felt a gentle hand on top of her head. She shivered. Despite how ghosts usually were, this one feltwarm. She hesitantly pulled the blanket down under her eyes but no more. A somehow-familiar form stood there, though he was translucent. “You won’t have to worry after tonight ever again, Weiss.” His tone was warm, though it echoed oddly across space and time.
“Who are you?” He looked familiar but she couldn’t place it.
“Your grandfather.” She blinked. Nicholas was still with them…? Why would he take so long to show himself….? She had so many questions for him… He petted her head, his hand unusually warm against her scalp. “Jacques won’t bother you ever again after tonight.”
