Chapter 1

Settings
Chaos rained around Winter as she looked around, almost as if behind a pane of glass. Fires raged in Mantle and angry citizens in Atlas threw rocks through windows and looted houses. There was nothing she could do to stop it all. The only reason Schnee manor remained safe was because of the intense security. She knew that she was lucky. Few people wanted to deal with the Hunters the Schnees had hired and brought on in order to keep them safe during this awful time. “Winter… Hey, Winter.” She felt a hand clasp around her shoulder. She started and opened her eyes into…darkness. The hand shook her gently. “Winter, are you okay?” The voice was familiar. Qrow. She relaxed and rested against him. “Sorry. Nightmares again,” she muttered. She didn’t want to worry him, but his advanced aura definitely kept him on his toes and allowed him to handle problems as they arose. At least when they were together. She was still constantly busy with the SDC and he was a teacher at Beacon despite his advanced age. He wasn’t the type that would give up his active lifestyle very easily. “The riots?” His voice was quiet in the darkness. It didn’t need much to carry when they were so close and it was so quiet. The kids were all fast asleep, so she didn’t have to worry about them bothering them either. She nodded. “Yeah.” He rubbed her shoulder. “It’s all right, Winter. Those years arelongbehind us.” “I know, but it doesn’t stop them from bothering me.” She sighed and closed her eyes, resting against him. “It’ll be all right. I’ll keep you safe just as I always do.” “Thank you.” He wrapped an arm around her and she nestled against him. A feeling as if being submerged under a gentle blanket covered her and she drifted back into a dreamless slumber.
