Chapter 1

Weiss sat in her office, staring down at the dust equations before her. Her vision swam. She’d been at this far, far too long for her own good. She wasn’t sixteen anymore where she could pull all nighters any longer. She really knew that she ought to give up for the night, but it hurt. It hurt too much. It was the anniversary of Blake’s death… If it hadn’t been for Willow and Qrow showing her the impacts of alcohol, she would definitely be plastered right now. They were supposed to have grown old together, made a family. Weiss was supposed to care for their kids until they were old enough to be left alone.
But no, that hadn’t happened.
Blake had been killed by bandits while out on an archeological dig in central Mistral. It had been years since then, but the anniversary of Blake’s death never failed to leave her sleepless. She was happy with Yang and Sage now…but it wasn’t the same. It wouldneverbe the same, not until she died. And she wasn’t the type to commit suicide either. She knew she’d see Blake again, but it just felt like it’d be forever… She was stillso youngand haddecadesahead of her.
Weiss.
Weiss looked around, ears at attention. It sounded like…
No, it couldn’t be.
She hadtalkedwith Blake’s spirit right before it had moved onto the afterlife. And once a spirit went into the afterlife, there was no coming back. Melanthios had told her that much. Blake had opted not to stick around as most spirits did. It was only a rare few that didn’t go onto the afterlife, like Radiance Rose.
Weiss.
She rubbed her eyes. She was hearing things for certain.
She closed the dust notebook and turned off the light. She was hearing things and she knew it. There was no point in humoring the delusions dancing in her head. So she went to her bed and laid down. Tomorrow would be a long falconry day and she needed all of her energy to be up at dawn and take the birds out.
