Turns out my soulmate isn’t the one, indeed: Trapped in revenge, in the black from his head to feet. Was that feeling sincere? Did you love me, or I just wasted time Caring, missing, and waiting for you… Reviving what we had so long ago? But you buried everything in the red dust, Took it down below, with my absolute trust.27 - The red dust (Lan Jue/Gu Qingzhang)

Notes:
红尘 (hóngchén), "red dust", typically means "the world of mortals" (Buddhism), human society, worldly affairs, or ostentatious luxury, superficial glitter. However, in Gu Qingzhang's case, the term takes on a sinister connotation. For him, "red dust" isn't simply worldly vanity, but a symbol of distorted justice and a poisoned world, which he believes is responsible for his suffering. Lan Jue could not accept Gu Qingzhang's twisted path of revenge: the red dust symbolizes the rift between them. Lan Jue, realizing that Gu Qingzhang's actions will only lead to chaos, chooses the path of protecting people. He chooses the path of creation, not destruction. The red dust emphasizes the contrast between their choices. Gu Qingzhang dissolves in it, becoming part of the destruction, while Lan Jue remains to restore justice and help people. If we interpret the relationship between Gu Qingzhang and Lan Jue as a tragic love, then the red dust symbolizes the impossibility of their reunion.
