Chapter 1

The river had warmed up well during the day, so the water greeted the wolf’s body with a pleasant coolness contrasting the roasting sun, but with a warm and soft embrace compared to the morning chill. The sun had already crossed the zenith and didn’t glare, still illuminating the clear water well enough, which was cleaner than any glass — if it didn’t blur from refraction, it would not be detectable at all, like air! But you can’t breathe in…
Making smooth strokes, the female headed for the very bottom. Fishing in such an old-fashioned way isn’t an easy task, but it’s much safer than hobo begging… Looking up, the female saw the bottom of the boat moving slowly over her head, as if in the sky… Frozen in place, the female gave herself up to the sight, but remembered herself in time and swam to the surface. She grabbed the side of the boat and breathed for a few seconds, resting from diving, after which she released her fingers and went under the water again.
Now, when she was hugged and stroked by the currents, and her body was almost losing weight, constantly striving to float up to heaven due to overcrowding, Vera no longer experienced adversities and worries. It was calm, like mother paws, and her own fur fluffed out, adding to the beauty. If it weren’t for the need for air, Vera would have stayed here, underwater, where there is always food, where people can’t be heard, and no one bothers to live peacefully and admire the picturesque algae thickets and timid fish.
There were many of them — small river fish moved along the bottom or followed the current, glittering with scales. The curious underwater inhabitants were not at all afraid of the wolf, although they didn't seek to get closer — and Vera was in no hurry to switch to fishing, preferring to act for sure. After all, the river isn't a lake, and she needed not only to think about hunting, but also to watch the movement of the boat above her head. Fortunately, she hadn’t moved much away from her, so the wolf sank to the bottom and stood on her paws, stirring up the water. Her body tensed, but how gorgeous she looked in that position, bathed in the light of silver and gold, her front paws raised and her hind legs bent for a better push. Her tail froze, fluffing out, and her mane fluttered beautifully from the water…
Vera froze in this state again, time slowed down, just like in the morning. Not from emptiness in the soul, on the contrary — from overflowing with peace and pleasure from life. Although it was already beginning to tickle behind the fluffy breast, the taut tummy tightened, contracting barely noticeably, and several bubbles slipped out of the nose. The she-wolf couldn’t find the will to get up right away, admiring the underwater landscape framed by her own disheveled mane. The current circled her paws and body, bringing bliss and relaxation, and the female gratefully looked at the light waves refracting the sky with clouds, to which bubbles rose from behind her teeth, bringing to God an inaudible whisper of gratitude.
Pushing aside her hair, which was persistently climbing into her eyes, the female jerked off, but the first sharp movements were replaced by smooth and calm ones. Fishing could wait a little longer — the female swam, enjoying the coolness of the river and the healing touches of the water, relieving fatigue and driving away worries. Turning over on her back, she released a couple more bubbles, admiring the boat again, from the bottom of which a glow emanated — the light was refracted in the waves created by its hull. Beauty…
The rays, which now didn't pass directly into the water, had already warmed up the thickness of the river, and it gave warmth to the wolf, soothing and stroking his stomach, like a pet animal. Closing her eyes tightly, Vera imagined that she was hanging above the ground in the clouds, and she was being held not by water, but by a dense wind, which was also stirring the fur. Only the slight trembling of the paws, which gently and unharmed scratched the water, the twisting of the tail and the bubbles, which were already leaving the slightly open mouth in heaps, reminded Vera that she was in the depths, and not high above the world.… But all the same, this magical feeling captured and subdued the wolf. The gentle touch of the water completely clouded her consciousness — the female, who had closed her eyes, completely surrendered to the serene peace that the river gave her, trying not to pay attention to the slight and still even pleasant burning sensation in her chest. Bubbles stopped rising from her mouth, not because there were none left, but because she clenched her teeth, saving the remnants of her air supply.
If she didn’t have to keep an eye on the boat, Vera would be able to call herself completely free. She paddled with paws trembling with excitement, slowly turning somersaults in the water, not thinking which way to swim, only to feel the slight resistance of the warm water, which spread all her fur in beautiful weightless plumes and reached her skin with its streams. The fish were already used to the wolf and swam not far away, not afraid, but she didn't pay attention to them, absorbed in the lingering underwater pleasure. The hind paws curled up their fingers from the stuffiness, but the front paws themselves lowered to the slightly retracted belly to stroke it along with the water. But a little later, one paw rose to his chest, impatiently stirring the fur on it, and the other pressed his nose so as not to exhale inadvertently.
Touches of her own fingers… were no worse than the weasels of the water. Clutching her nose, the female accidentally touched her nipple, hidden under a veil of gray fur, caused herself to moan slightly and with it a bubble that flew away. Hastily clenching her teeth, Vera thought with shame what would have happened if her father or friends had seen her now — but except for the fish at the bottom of the river, no one could see the female now…
The wolf rushed up when she could no longer stay below the surface. Her rebellious body now threatened to destroy her soul — she realized that she had been underwater for too long, her tummy pressed down, her breast trembled convulsively, her tail got tangled in her hind legs, and the hind legs themselves made some wrong and incomprehensible movements, helping the female little on the way up. Her heart was pounding somewhere in her head, probably pushed out by her lungs, begging for air, and her jaws were unclenching against the force, threatening to take the first and last sip of river water.
“God help me!” — the only sound thought flashed through his clouded head. “Don’t let me die so stupidly! Please!”
Boom! Bul-bul-bul…
Vera was pierced by fear, which replaced all other emotions. Even the pain in her head when she hit something hard. The little face, exhaling all the bubbles in one pile, grinned like a wild wolf cornered. Her front paws shot up, rattling against the wood. Consciousness didn't immediately suggest that this was her own boat, which Vera had already forgotten about. Or she just didn’t realize when her body was shuddering in the heat.
The twitching female pawed at the bottom, already opening her mouth in vain, swam away and miraculously surfaced next to the boat at the moment when river water gushed into her mouth.
