Chapter 16

Sugishita revealed the sad story of Momijikawa. It turns out the boy’s only surviving family member is his grandmother, who doesn’t even recognize him. His story made me very sad, and my opinion of Momijikawa changed.
The boy grew up in a large family that ran a workshop, and he, as the future heir to the workshop, was constantly tinkering, fixing, and so on. Then, one day, his grandfather committed suicide, and then his parents died.
In these dramas, when it seems like there won’t be any sadder stories than our favorite characters, another character appears whose story is just as sad and heartbreaking—Windbreaker—and those moments are absolutely spot on.
As everyone probably understands, Momijikawa’s hatred for out-of-towners stems precisely from what happened to his family. His grandfather could have committed suicide because of gossip or criticism from someone outside the area. I can’t say much yet, of course, but there probably was a lot of criticism, condemnation, and so on directed at the workshop or his grandfather from outside the area, which led Momijikawa’s grandfather to take his own life.
And his parents probably died in an accident, since that’s the thought that comes to mind from Sugishita’s story. Momijikawa’s grandmother doesn’t recognize him due to a possible memory disorder, or, say, the possible progression of dementia. I think she doesn’t have much time left, which means Momijikawa will soon be completely alone.
Now, let’s return to one very interesting moment: when Sugishita finished his story and many of the children realized they were wrong about Momijikawa, I noticed Sakura’s face. You can see sadness in his gaze.
What if Sakura’s past, which has remained unseen, really does reveal itself through Momijikawa? I think so, and it’s no wonder we, the fans, are the only ones who haven’t yet learned about Sakura’s long-awaited past.
I think her and Momijikawa’s pasts may be somewhat similar, hence the reason why Sakura’s story has been left unseen. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this in the comments.
