Universe One: Jinu

"So where are you off to again?" Romance crossed his arms over his chest, his voice icy cold. He stared intently at Jinu as if trying to pierce him with his gaze. His fingers nervously tapped against the tabletop, tapping out an impatient rhythm. Jinu tensed up. His throat tightened as though invisible claws had sunk into it. Telling the truth was impossible—he was a demon after all, and demons shouldn't feel anything like that. No longing, no regret, none of this stupid, nagging pain gnawing away inside every time he thought about one particular girl. "Just going for a look," he managed to choke out, stubbornly staring at one of his "friends." But holding that probing stare proved too much—he turned away, feeling warmth spread across his cheeks. Mystery clicked his tongue and apparently rolled his eyes, which, understandably, wasn't visible due to his fringe covering his face. "You asked what time sunset was today just to ‘look around’?" he said sarcastically. "Simply to ‘have a look’?" Jinu clenched his fists so tightly that his nails dug into his palms. He shouldn't be coming to that cursed clearing every night. Shouldn't keep remembering her face, her voice, that moment when everything went wrong. But he couldn’t do otherwise anymore. So he merely sighed, not deigning to answer his friends, spun around, and walked away. An ordinary meadow on the edge of town. Well, not quite ordinary. Jinu liked how quiet it was, how nobody else ever came by, allowing him to peacefully watch the starry sky. To think calmly about everything under the sun without anyone suspecting what might have been on his mind. It took roughly an hour to get there, during which time the demon had plenty to contemplate. Still, perhaps it would’ve been wiser to reconsider once more upon arrival… Why bother trudging back and forth anyway? Couldn’t he simply stroll through the city instead? But seeing those horrible demons nearby quickly dispelled any unnecessary questions from his head, and he continued walking. Sitting right in the middle of the field, he didn’t hesitate before lying flat on his back, propping his hand behind his head and gazing up at the sky. The boy closed his eyes and tried hard to recall what it used to be like—before becoming a demon, before trading himself for memory erasure. Demons won, and they truly did erase his memories. Maybe his family died? Or everyone abandoned him, betrayed him? Possibly, he committed something horrific enough that he couldn’t forgive himself? No, none of these seemed right. Suddenly, Jinu heard rustling sounds and abruptly stood up, already drawing his weapon, ready for battle if necessary. Then, amidst the tall grass, a flash of blue appeared. Relieved, he exhaled when he recognized Derpy and sat back down, calling the animal closer to pet it. The creature eagerly ran towards its master, snuggling affectionately into his palm. Jinu looked back up at the sky and now contemplated why his heart always shattered into tiny pieces. About the girl named Rumi. What if he hadn’t killed her back then? Would they have even become mere friends? Or maybe something more? Or could she have helped break their deal and return him to being human, as she’d promised? Now there were no answers to these questions, leaving Jinu only able to gaze at the stars above and ponder things forever unanswerable.
