Chapter 7: Dawn Without Hope
August 4, 2025 at 12:03 PM
Morning arrived, but it brought no relief. Aisha had been unable to sleep after her nightmarish awakening. She tossed and turned in bed, futilely trying to banish the anxious thoughts and visions that plagued her. Memories of a dark past pulsed in her mind, and a heavy weight of fear lay upon her heart.
The morning light, filtered through the grimy window, appeared gray and lifeless. The city awoke, but for Aisha, there was nothing joyful about it. She watched the hurried figures of people going about their business, feeling as though she were gazing through thick glass, separated from a normal life.
-I need to do something,* she thought. -I can't just sit here and wait for them to come for me. But what? Where can I run? Where can I seek help?*
She understood that her time was limited. Now that her secret was out, the "Sanji Boys" and Gi-ma would begin their hunt, and she wouldn’t be able to hide for long. She glanced at the clock on the nightstand. The hands pointed to "7."
Suddenly, she felt someone approaching. She recognized that familiar energy—it belonged to her friend, who emerged from her room. She stretched sleepily, yawning widely, and headed for the kitchen to brew a cup of coffee. But the moment her friend’s gaze fell upon Aisha standing by the window, she froze in place.
-Why aren’t you sleeping?”- her friend asked, her voice thick with sleep. “Is something wrong?”
Aisha looked at her, seeing concern and worry reflected in her friend’s eyes. She longed to confide everything, to share her fear and ask for help. But she knew that would be too dangerous. She couldn’t drag her friend into this nightmare.
-It’s nothing,- Aisha replied, striving to sound as calm as possible. -Just couldn’t sleep. Lost in thought.
She understood that she needed to leave this city as far away as possible to keep her friend safe, but at the same time, she didn’t want to abandon her in ignorance.
Aisha traced her fingertips along the cold glass, as if trying to feel its texture, to find some support within it. The gray landscapes of the city outside mirrored in her eyes like a murky mirror, distorting reality. Something in that view compelled her to make a decision.
Her gaze hardened, and a steely glint appeared in her eyes. *Run? Hide? Cower like a timid beast cornered?* No, that wasn’t for her. She wouldn’t let fear paralyze her; she wouldn’t allow the darkness to consume her.
She clenched her fists tightly, feeling the claws of the demon involuntarily extend beneath her skin. No, she wouldn’t return to Gi-ma; she wouldn’t become his puppet. She wouldn’t allow him to control her life, her fate.
If she couldn’t run, then she would fight. If they wanted war, they would get it. She would show them what a runaway demoness, challenging Gi-ma himself, was capable of.
But how? She knew she couldn’t do it alone. The "Sanji Boys" were powerful demons, and "Huntrix" were experienced hunters. She needed allies—someone who would believe in her and help her in this struggle.
Where could she find them? In this world of humans, where she had tried so hard to blend in, or in the world of demons she had fled from? She didn’t know. She had to find the answer to that question, and she had to do it quickly.
-The main thing is to prepare.-She needed to hone her skills, learn to control her powers better, study her enemies’ weaknesses. She had to become stronger to withstand the impending storm.
Turning away from the window, she left the gray dawn behind. Fear still reigned in her heart, but now it was mingled with determination. A purple light flickered at her fingertips, heralding the approaching battle.
As she turned from the window, Aisha met her friend’s gaze. Concern swirled in her eyes, and Aisha realized she would have to somehow explain her strange behavior. But she didn’t want to lie, nor was she capable of it.
Taking a deep breath, she approached her friend and took her hands. -I need to tell you something, -she said, trying to keep her voice steady, though anxiety colored her tone.
-What’s wrong?- her friend asked, alarmed, looking into her eyes.
Aisha hesitated, unsure how to begin. How could she tell her the truth without scaring her to death? How could she explain that she was not who she appeared to be?
-It’s complicated…-she started, searching for the right words. -I… I’m not quite an ordinary person.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Aisha froze. Who could it be at this hour? Were they already here?
Her friend, oblivious to Aisha’s tense state, walked toward the door.
-I’ll get it,- she said, and Aisha realized she couldn’t stop her. If it was her enemies, she had to protect her friend at all costs.
With her heart racing, Aisha watched as her friend opened the door. Standing on the threshold was a stranger in a dark suit. His face was shrouded in shadow, and Aisha couldn’t make out his expression.
-I’m looking for Aisha,- the man said, his voice low and gravelly.
Aisha’s blood ran cold. She recognized that voice. It was one of Gi-ma’s henchmen. He had found her.
Without wasting a second, Aisha lunged toward her friend, pushing her aside.
-Run!- she screamed, locking eyes with her. -Run and don’t look back!
At that moment, the man stepped forward, and a glint of metal flashed in his hand.
However, as he entered the apartment, Aisha froze in disbelief. It was… Baby from the Sanji Boys. But now, there was no trace of the sweet innocence in his face—only icy cruelty.
Before Aisha could react, Baby swiftly drew a thin, razor-sharp blade from beneath his cloak and plunged it into her friend’s abdomen. The woman gasped in pain, her eyes widening in horror and confusion. She staggered and collapsed to the floor, choking on her blood.
Aisha, struck as if by lightning, fell to her knees beside her, grasping her hand in desperation.
-No! No, no, no!- she whispered, staring at the crimson stain spreading across the fabric of her friend’s dress.
Baby approached them unperturbed, looking down at Aisha with a mocking expression.
-What’s the matter? Why such sadness? Is your little friend dying?- His voice dripped with sickly sweetness, like poison pouring from a beautiful vessel.
Driven by rage, Aisha attempted to strike Baby, but he effortlessly seized her wrist as if she were a toy.
-Shh, shh, no need to get so angry,- he cooed, squeezing her wrist so tightly that she felt her bones creak.
-You… you monster!- Aisha hissed, glaring at him with hatred.
Baby pretended to sigh dramatically. -A monster? What are you talking about? I’m just doing my job. Besides, is she really that important to you? She’s not even human, is she?
Aisha froze, as if struck by lightning. What did he mean? What was he saying?
-She’s a person! She’s my friend! -Aisha shouted, tearing her gaze from Baby to look at the woman lying on the floor.
And then, as if struck by a revelation, she was pierced by a horrifying realization. She understood with dread that Baby was right. Something was amiss. Why had she never called her by name? Why couldn’t she remember any details about her past? How had she even met her?
She looked at her “friend” once more. And she saw what she had overlooked before: unnaturally pale skin, a frozen expression, the absence of a pulse. This woman was merely an illusion, a projection of her consciousness, created to fill the void. She had invented her, endowed her with traits, but had never given her a name.
Tears streamed down her cheeks. She mourned not only the loss of the illusory friend but also herself, her lonely and wretched life.
-Now you understand, -Baby whispered, leaning close to her ear. -You’ve always been alone, Aisha. And you always will be. Accept your fate.
Pain and bitterness surged through Aisha, but in her eyes, a fire of determination ignited. She broke free from Baby’s grip with unexpected strength and, turning around, struck him with all her might. The blow was so powerful that Baby staggered back, losing his balance.
-I accept myself as I am! -Aisha shouted, her voice trembling with hatred and pain. -I am a human! And I will never become the monster you and your Gi-ma want me to be!
Baby wiped the blood from his lip, smirking.
-Oh, what bravery! But what about your purple claws, your demonic power? Do you really think you can deceive fate?
Aisha ignored his words. She didn’t care about fate, prophecies, or anything tying her to the world of demons. Right now, she was a human, and as a human, she would fight for her life.
-I don’t care about you or your threats!-she spat, looking Baby in the eye. -I will never return to Gi-ma! And you won’t stop me!
A crooked smile spread across her face.
-And by the way, are you sure you can take me to your master?- she whispered, and in that moment, she dashed past Baby toward the apartment exit.
She knew he was stronger and faster, but she had a chance. A chance to break free, a chance to buy time. She ran down the corridor, stumbling and gasping for breath, but not stopping for a second.
Bursting out of the apartment, she raced down the stairs, leaping over several steps. She could hear Baby pursuing her, his light footsteps echoing in the silence of the stairwell.
Baby grinned, relishing the chase.
-Well, this will be fun,- he whispered, and he lunged after Aisha like a predator pursuing its prey. The hunt had begun.
