Copper – Resilience
James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew
“I feel like I’m going to barf.”
“Mmm, always the poet, always the…” Sirius choked with saliva and started coughing.
“Easy there, don’t spit it… And don’t swallow. I know you want to.”
“Oh… FUCK YOU.” Sirius hissed and wiped the trickle of saliva that ran from the corner of his mouth. “You’re doing that on purpose!”
James laughed and shook his head.
“Well… come on, Siri, that was too obvious of a joke not to act on it.”
“If I have to go through all of that again and spend another month with a mandrake leaf in my mouth, I swear, I will kill you, James,” he grumbled but there already was a smile on his lips. The beautiful and dreamy smile that had a tendency to make girls follow Sirius with their eyes the way they never did with James, or Remus, or, God forbid, Peter.
“The most difficult part would still be the storm,” James said thoughtfully. “Because you can’t predict that. We will have to wait.”
“Well, they say that some things are worth waiting for,” Remus didn’t even raise his eyes from the book he was reading. He didn’t know how to feel about the whole idea. Part of him kept insisting that it was a terrible idea with too many possibilities of things going wrong. Another part of him was so grateful, and hoping, and excited that he couldn’t find enough power in himself to ask his friends to stop.
“You know James. He’s like a five-year-old,” smirked Sirius. “Can’t wait for anything good. Just has to have it all and at once… the spoiled brat he is.”
“Look who’s talking,” James rolled his eyes. “The prince of royal blood himself!”
“You know, Remus, I think we shouldn’t let young mister Potter go further with the animagi stuff,” said Sirius gently. “He’d definitely turn into an ass, and you’ll have to spend your moons with an ass for a company.”
“I will be happy to have James around even if he turns into a donkey.”
“I didn’t say “donkey”, darling. I said “an ass”.
“Stop bickering like an old couple, for God’s sake!”
“Never!” their voices blended into one and the laughter followed.
Becoming an animagi demanded all the resilience a wizard could have but, looking at his friends, Remus had to admit that nothing was impossible for these two.
“Guys, I have a question… how do you brush your teeth without taking the mandrake leaf out of your mouth?” Peter entered the room with a look of confusion on his face.
“The usual way. Just be careful when you spit…”
“Oh, here we go again…” sighed Remus. But he was smiling.
Notes:
The reason why there are so few animagi around is that the process of becoming one is very complex and long.
One of the ingredients of the potion for that is a mandrake leaf that you’ll have to keep in your mouth (without taking the leaf out!) for a month, from one full moon till the other. Think of all the incantations and all the things that can go south!
It’s long, meticulous and extremely dangerous. Of course, the Marauders did that!
Some things are worth waiting for.
