...the peaceful sky above was hidden by the dense canopies of jungle trees. Only sparse sunbeams broke through the foliage, sliding along the worn paths, clinging to the rough leaves of ferns and the smooth bark of young trees.
A gust of wind—and suddenly the forest froze, filled with rustling hints, whispering half-truths about something important... But only they could understand this language—the trees and the wind, bound by an ancient pact of silence.
Beat
Day-night. In the distance, fleeting shadowy silhouettes flickered, each unlike the other. You walk, but your back burns under someone’s gaze. They’ve been following you for a long time. Are you pretending not to notice? Or do you truly not recognize them?
— "No, this won’t do. Guys!" — the Master of Fire shouted in an attempt to get a response, delving deeper into the impenetrable jungle.
— "So... This isn’t a joke anymore?"
The last words were swallowed by the hum of the night forest, as if the darkness had devoured them.
Beat
I noticed how the paths shifted before my eyes, coiling around the earth like snakes, slithering between roots and stretching into the distance—where not even light could reach. I walked on, no longer remembering the starting point. How long ago had I taken my second step?
The paths twisted, slicing through space, yet still led forward—deeper, to where no one returns. All I could do was follow the invisible trail, imagining in my mind how this journey might end.
— "If I take another step... will they attack me?" — He kept walking, but the only footsteps I heard were my own.
Beat
Time doesn’t exist here—only the loop of my thoughts. The harder I tried to turn back, the clearer I understood: there is no "back." Only "Forward," scratched onto a rusted sign like the truth of this place.
— "What does 'forward' even mean? To the sane, it means ahead—but here, in this endless forest, 'forward' could lead anywhere: left, ahead, sideways, even downward, into the earth’s maw. No matter where I go, I’ll always be moving 'forward.'"
The ground beneath my feet grew denser, packed with crushed bones replacing the familiar earth. The heavy stench of decay became my constant companion. I wiped sweat from my brow with my sleeve, and that simple gesture now felt like the only reminder that another world had once existed.
Beat
Everything became an endless circle of wandering—so meaningless that I wanted to collapse and let the ants devour me. A futile waste of time, driving me mad.
Step.
The trail vanished, as if the guy had never been here. The previously trampled territories erased themselves from the forest’s memory, and the Master of Fire began to feel like he was being erased too...
How much time had passed? Did it even exist here? What day was it? How many steps had he taken from the starting point, and had he truly begun where he thought he had?
Beat
He’s filthy.
Maybe... he imagined it? Why an impenetrable jungle with no clear, open sky?
Beat
His eyes no longer deceived him with imagined, well-trodden paths. On Smith’s journey, he encountered only thick ferns, gnarled trees tangled in vines, and rattan palms of the Calamus genus. Each new obstacle made every step harder, slowing his pace to an agonizing crawl.
Beat
The viscous muck underfoot drowned his last hope of escape. Kai dragged his feet with difficulty—his eyelids drooped, consciousness slipping away. Before his eyes, new silhouettes appeared in the form of... spruces? What were they doing in the jungle?
The ninja took a few steps when suddenly the earth split beneath him—a chasm yawned open, plunging into unfathomable darkness. His heart pounded wildly as he barely managed to recoil from the edge. Dropping to his knees, Kai peered into the abyss.
— "The journey is over, Kai Smith—again," he whispered.
No more paths, the journey is over, Kai Smith is over. Hypnotized by the beckoning void, he took the fatal step...
...and vanished.
But why...?
