Chapter 1: The Abyssal Awakening
The year was 2027.
At first, it was just a tremor. A distant rumble underfoot, like a train passing underground. But within seconds, the earth convulsed violently. Skyscrapers groaned. Trees bent and shattered. Sirens wailed across the night as chaos erupted in every direction.
Tekutoji van Bastian was walking home after his late-night shift at the factory, his hands blistered and his back aching. At twenty years old, he had already sacrificed everything—his education, his dreams, and even his youth—to care for his fifteen-year-old sister, Athena. Orphaned years ago, they had no one but each other.
He was just passing through a quiet alley when the ground cracked beneath his feet. Buildings leaned unnaturally, and a haunting wind swept through the city. Then—without warning—the sky itself seemed to tear open.
A massive, jagged portal appeared above Tokyo, swirling with crimson and black energy. Similar gates opened in cities across the globe. From them poured monstrous beings—twisted shadows, grotesque beasts, and creatures from the deepest nightmares.
Tekutoji froze.
A voice thundered from the skies, echoing across the entire planet, seemingly from nowhere and everywhere all at once.
> "Good evening, humans.
In accordance with the Law of the Universe, your world has been selected… to entertain the boredom of the gods."
People screamed. Some fell to their knees. Others ran for their lives.
> "To survive, each of you will be granted a System. Adapt. Fight. Or perish."
A man beside Tekutoji shouted in surprise, “I’ve got one! Just like the old RPGs I used to play!”
A woman screamed, “I’ve got a system too! There’s a menu and everything!”
Tekutoji blinked, heart racing. He looked around frantically, waiting for something—anything—to appear in front of him.
But there was nothing.
No system. No message. No power.
Suddenly, a monstrous roar split the night. From one of the gates, a colossal beast emerged—a lion with three heads, its fur aflame, its eyes burning with hatred. It landed in the street with a ground-shaking crash, crushing cars and roaring toward him.
Tekutoji stumbled backward in terror. He couldn’t run. He couldn’t fight. He had nothing.
Then, like a blade of moonlight slicing through the darkness, a figure appeared between him and the beast.
She had silver hair that shimmered like frost, eyes like shards of ice, and held a sword crackling with frozen energy.
With a cry, she swung her blade and cleaved the three-headed monster in half, the body splitting apart in a spray of black ichor.
Tekutoji stared, breathless.
The girl turned around.
“Athena…?” he whispered.
It was her—his little sister. No longer the timid girl he had known, but a warrior radiating power.
He ran to her and embraced her tightly. “Thank God… you’re alive.”
She hugged him back briefly, but her eyes were distant, searching. “You didn’t get a system…?”
He shook his head. “Nothing.”
Her expression faltered. The warmth in her eyes faded.
“Oh,” she said softly.
Behind her, two more figures arrived—her classmates from school.
Michael was tall with crimson hair and fiery red eyes, carrying a thunder-charged blade. Mary, with chestnut curls and piercing brown eyes, held a sword wrapped in flames.
“Hey, Athena,” Michael said casually, eyeing Tekutoji. “Is this your brother?”
“Yes,” she replied quietly.
Mary scowled. “Why didn’t he help us with that lizard?”
“I don’t have any powers,” Tekutoji said, embarrassed.
The two laughed mockingly. “No system? How pathetic,” Mary sneered. “You sure he’s even your real brother?”
Michael added, “Yeah. You’ve got silver hair. His is just... normal.”
Athena’s eyes narrowed. “We have different fathers.”
She didn’t elaborate further.
Then, to Tekutoji’s shock, Athena turned to him, her voice cold and commanding.
“Go home.”
“What?” he asked, confused.
“I said go home,” she repeated.
And that was the last thing she said before turning away.
Tekutoji stood there, lost in the chaos, watching the sister he had raised walk away into a world he could no longer follow.
