Chapter twenty-one

Settings
The days passed, and the Dark Hand became a regular presence in her life. Pemuya felt guilty for enjoying their company, but she couldn't deny the companionship they provided during Jackie's absence. One evening, Valmont arrived with a serious expression etched on his face. "We need to talk," he said, his voice low. Pemuya nodded, her mind racing with what could have possibly changed. She led him to the living room, where little Sophia cooed in her playpen. "Is everything okay?" she asked, her voice tentative. Valmont looked down at his hands, clenched into fists. "You see..." he began, sighing heavily. "We... I mean me and the others... we can't just hide from the justice forever. We must do something to change it. So I made a decision." Pemuya's eyes widened, her heart thudding in her chest. "What decision?" "As you know," he explained slowly, "there are some particularly dangerous criminals in San Francisco. Drug traders, for example. So we decided to capture one of them and get him into jail. I think after such a gesture the authorities will cancel our sentence, or at least soften it." Pemuya's heart skipped a beat. She knew that the path Valmont was suggesting was fraught with danger, but she also knew that he was right. If they could do something good, something that truly helped people, perhaps they could start to make amends for their past. "As you understand," he continued, "it's dangerous. So I came here to say goodbye. If I'll survive, I'll come back after it all will be over. But if something happens... then you'll know all the answers." Pemuya felt a cold hand grip her heart, but she nodded, her eyes never leaving Valmont's. "I understand," she said, her voice steady. "But you must promise me you'll be careful." "I will," he nodded firmly. "For myself, and for Sophia. Now, let me say goodbye to her." Pemuya watched as Valmont leaned over the playpen, his eyes misting over as he stroked their daughter's cheek. The sight was surprisingly poignant, and she felt a pang of something she didn't quite recognize. It wasn't love, not in the traditional sense, but it was a bond that went deeper than she could have ever imagined. "Take care of her," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Tell her I love her." Pemuya nodded, her throat tight. "I will," she promised. "Please come back to us." "I'll try," he nodded again. "I'll miss you," she murmured, her eyes fluttering closed. "And I'll miss you," he responded, his voice filled with a sincerity that took her by surprise. "I must go now. Hold me." Pemuya nodded, standing on her toes to wrap her arms around his neck. Valmont pulled her into a tight embrace, his hands resting on the small of her back. The warmth of his body seeped into her, and she felt a sense of peace she hadn't felt since Jackie left. They stood there for a long moment, each lost in their own thoughts, until the sound of a car honking outside jolted them back to reality. "It's time," Valmont whispered, his breath warm against her ear. "Take care of yourself and our daughter." With heavy heart, Pemuya watched him go, the door closing with a gentle click behind him. She leaned against the doorframe, her eyes misty with unshed tears. She knew that Jackie would never accept her bond with Valmont, but she couldn't help the feelings that had grown within her. For the rest of the night, she held little Sophia close, her thoughts racing with worry for Valmont and his mission. The baby cooed and gurgled, blissfully unaware of the gravity of the situation, and Pemuya took comfort in her daughter's warmth and innocence.
