Chapter thirteen

The next morning Pemuya woke up from the sound of the door unlocking again. "Refreshment time," said Ratso, his voice gruff but not unkind. Finn and Chow were with him, as usual. "You use the toilet," Ratso continued, "and then we shower you. If you want any shower, of course. But the water will be cold." Pemuya nodded gratefully, the thought of cleaning herself up after the night in the cell more than welcome. She was led to a tiny room which appeared a toilet. When she emerged, the men led her to the basement. "You see," Finn explained, "the only shower here is a fire hose. I'll hold it, and you shower." Pemuya nodded, her eyes wide with fear. The cold water stung as it hit her, but she forced herself to endure it, the men's eyes on her as she cleaned herself. It was a humiliating experience, but she knew she had to keep her dignity intact. "Here," Chow handed her a dry towel when she finished washing. "Rub yourself till your skin is red... I mean..." The other two men chuckled: Pemuya's skin was red from her birth. "Thank you," she murmured, taking the towel with trembling hands. "Do rub yourself hard," Chow said seriously. "You don't want to catch a cold, do you?" Pemuya nodded, wrapping the towel around her shivering body. The cold water had brought her back to reality, the starkness of her situation starker than ever. "Still cold?" Finn asked when she was dry. Pemuya nodded, her teeth chattering slightly. "Give me a hug," Chow said, opening his arms. Pemuya looked at him, then at Ratso and Finn who nodded approvingly. She stepped into his embrace, feeling the warmth of his body. It was strange, but she felt safe with him. Finn approached them and pressed his back to Pemuya's, so now she was warmed from every side. "Group hug!" Ratso shouted and wrapped his big arms around all three of them. Pemuya felt their warmth, a stark contrast to the coldness of her captivity. For a moment, she allowed herself to believe she was safe, nestled between three Jackie's enemies. But the harsh reality of her situation slapped her back to the present when they released her. "You'll get used to it," Ratso said gruffly, his eyes never leaving hers. "Like we did. Now, let's get you to your cell." Pemuya followed, her bare feet padding softly against the cold floor. As they walked, she couldn't help but feel a twisted sense of camaraderie with the men who had kidnapped her. They weren't cruel, not like Shendu. Back in the cell, she wrapped herself in the blanket she was given yesterday evening. "We'll bring you breakfast soon," Finn said, locking her door. Pemuya nodded, curling into a ball on the mattress. The warmth from their bodies was already fading, leaving her to face the cold reality of her solitary confinement. She closed her eyes and took deep breaths, trying to calm her racing heart.

Days turned into a blur of cold cells and stolen moments of warmth with her captors. They brought her food, showered her from the fire hose and kept her warm. And every night, after she ate her dinner, they embraced and kissed her. But they never tried to rape her. Pemuya's mind was a whirlwind of confusion and fear. She missed Jackie and Tohru with an intensity that made her chest ache. The jungle sounds on the cassette tape played in her head, a lifeline to her lost life. But she also felt a strange kinship with these men, trapped in their own way by Shendu's will. One evening, as they brought her dinner, she gathered the courage to speak. "Please, tell me why you do this," she said softly. "Why do you serve Shendu?" Finn sighed, his expression weary. "We're thieves," he shrugged. "We can't do nothing else. So we worked on Valmont. But then Shendu forced us to work on him. We simply had no other choice." "But why are you being so... nice to me?" Pemuya asked, her voice tentative. Ratso grinned, showing a gold tooth. "Well, you're not just a pretty face. You're Chan's woman. And if he finds out we've hurt you, we're toast." "Besides," Chow added, "we're thieves, but we have our codex of honor." The words hung in the air, and for a brief moment, Pemuya felt a flicker of hope. These men, while certainly not her friends, seemed to have a line they weren't willing to cross. She took a deep breath and leaned into the warmth of their presence, the only solace in the cold, unforgiving world she now found herself in. Their words were like a balm to her soul. They were not monsters. They were just men, caught in the web of a much larger evil.
