Pemuya's pregnancy progressed, and with it came discomfort and fear. The city's cacophony was a constant assault on her senses, and the stifling heat of the urban jungle was a poor substitute for the soothing embrace of the one she knew. The doctor's visits were a source of anxiety for both of them, but Pemuya faced each one with stoic determination, her hand clutching Jackie's tightly as the cold instruments probed her body.
Jackie had hoped that the birth of their child would be a moment of pure joy, but as the due date approached, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Pemuya's tribe had their own ways of bringing new life into the world, and the modern hospital's sterile walls were a stark contrast to the vibrant life of the Amazon. He wished he could give her the experience she deserved, but he was in uncharted territory, navigating a world that was as foreign to him as the concrete jungle was to her.
The day came, and the contractions grew stronger. Pemuya's eyes searched his, filled with a mix of fear and determination. "Jackie," she gasped, her hand tightening around his, "the baby comes."
Jackie nodded, his heart racing. He had read all the books and taken all the classes, but nothing could have prepared him for this moment.
At the hospital, the doctors and nurses moved swiftly around them, their voices a blur of medical jargon. Pemuya's grip tightened, and Jackie knew she was scared.
"Breathe," he whispered, his hand on her shoulder. "You're doing great."
Her breaths grew heavier, each contraction a battle. The hospital was a whirlwind of activity around them, but Jackie's eyes remained fixed on Pemuya, his world narrowed to her pain and the promise of the life they had created.
"Jackie," she panted, her voice tight with pain, "I'm scared."
He took her hand in his, squeezing it gently. "You're not alone," he reassured her, his own fears hidden beneath a mask of calm. "I'm here with you."
The hours stretched on. Jackie felt a mix of awe and terror as he watched Pemuya, his heart racing in time with hers. And then, with one final, guttural scream, their child was born.
A tiny, squalling creature emerged into the harsh light of the hospital room, its skin a blend of Pemuya's copper hue and Jackie's golden tan. The doctor placed the baby in Pemuya's arms, and she stared down at it with wide, teary eyes. It was the first time she had ever seen something so small and helpless, and yet it was the most beautiful creature she had ever laid eyes on.
Jackie felt his heart swell with love as he watched the two of them, their bond unbreakable despite the chaos around them. He reached out tentatively, his fingers brushing against the soft, downy hair of their child.
"It's a boy," the doctor announced, a hint of amazement in his voice. "Healthy and strong."
Jackie felt his knees go weak with relief and joy. He looked at Pemuya, her face a mix of exhaustion and wonder. He leaned down to kiss her forehead, his voice thick with emotion. "You did it," he whispered. "You're a mother now."
The nurse took the baby to clean him up, and Jackie watched as Pemuya's eyes never left the small figure. Her love for the child was palpable, a fierce protective instinct that had been born alongside him. When the nurse brought him back, Jackie took the baby in his arms, feeling the warmth and weight of life in his hands.
"What do we name him?" Pemuya asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"How about Tohru?" he suggested carefully.
Pemuya nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Tohru," she repeated, trying out the name. "It's a good name. Strong, like the trees in my jungle."
Jackie felt warmth spread through him at her approval. "Then it's decided," he said firmly. "Our son's name is Tohru."
