A Day at the Library
June 14, 2025 at 12:58 PM
Nearly three weeks had gone by since Hoshino had been rescued and the students of Abydos High School returned to some semblance of normalcy. After returning to SCHALE and making a detailed report on what happened with Kaiser and the various problems in between his arrival and the safe return of his student. Afterwards, there was peace for once; no crazy kidnappings, unexpected battles breaking out in the streets, and for now, Ja'vassa could just focus on learning more about the city surrounding him. With the help of a few visitors from the Millenium Science School, he's been able to figure out the basics of the world's common pieces of technology. Even if he was a bit of an amateur with it, he was able to at least learn how to send and respond to messages sent to him by his students, and was able to take care of the basic paperwork sent to him on the computer in his office.
For the first days following his return to SCHALE, he found himself in a relatively simple pattern taking care of some paperwork followed by technology lessons courtesy of Kotama and Hare who seemed all too eager to teach him what they can. After they've left, it felt as if they were still there, listening to every word he said. Perhaps he was paranoid, but there were times it felt as if he could still hear their voices in the late hours of the day.
Over the course of the few weeks since leaving Abydos, he had taken some time to visit the other academies and befriended a few students; having spent some time in Red Winter Federal Academy and the Hyakkiyako Alliance Academy in addition to Millenium, Gehenna, and Trinity. Eventually, he intends to visit all of the various academies and schools across Kivotos, but for now, the few that he's visited will have to suffice.
Today, he had some free time and decided he'd visit Red Winter's library; many of his students claimed that it was one of the best places to study in all of Kivotos. If Ja'vassa truly intended to call this strange land his home, learning all that he could would make adjusting to it that much easier. Upon arriving in the grand library, he could help but marvel at the vast and well organized collection of books on the towering shelves. It was difficult to figure out where he should start, but he figured he'd start easy and find some books revolving around the weaponry and technology of the land.
The weapons used by his students were particularly fascinating; none of the firearms they held seemed to be particularly complicated, but their effectiveness in battle wasn't to be underestimated. Perhaps it was something they could replicate in Sjel Blad Castle, perhaps there was potential to infuse them with magic. Perhaps it was a pipe dream, maybe it wasn't, it was a fascinating prospect all the same. As he sat at an empty table with his books piled high, a Candlelight spell illuminating the scraps of paper strewn about the table, the world around him didn't seem to exist as he read and took various notes.
Approaching the table with a slight frown was another of his students. "Who left this mess all over the table?" The girl asked, a slight pout on her face as she eyed the rocket launcher she held just in case she'd need to use it on the troublemaker. She approached, trying to appear as threatening as possible. "Hey, you can't just----" The moment she realized who it was, an embarrassed blush dusted her cheeks. "S-Sensei? You're the one who made the mess?"
At the sound of her voice, Ja'vassa looked up from the papers and offered her a smile. "Ah, good morning, Momiji. Sorry about the mess, I'll clean it up when I'm finished here." He assured her, leaning back slightly in his chair.
Momiji let out a soft sigh, relaxing herself slightly. "N-No, it's okay. I'm sorry if I disturbed you..." She replied apologetically, wearing a sheepish smile on her face. "Though... Do you mind if I ask what you're studying? It's not often I see a teacher here."
Ja'vassa nodded, offering her a seat at the desk with him. "I'm just brushing up on a few subjects; the history of Kivotos, studying a few maps, and I'm particularly intrigued by the weapons you and your fellow students use." He explained, briefly eyeing her rocket launcher. "I've always wondered... is there a reason for the bear motif your weapon uses, Momiji?"
She was a bit caught off guard by the question, glancing towards the bear themed rockets she held. "N-No particular reason, I just thought they were cute... and I thought they fit in well with Red Winter's mascot." Momiji explained as she'd take a seat besides her teacher. "...that probably sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?"
Ja'vassa shook his head, smiling a bit in response to her explanation. "Not at all, Momiji. A weapon is more than that; it's often an extension of the wielder themselves. Hearing the stories behind them is something I adore, no matter how simple it might seem."
Ja'vassa's reassurance was relieving to hear, Momiji's somewhat sheepish smile turned to something a little more relaxed as she glanced towards the papers on the desk. "So... Do you have a weapon like that, Sensei? Something of great significance to you?" Her eyes moved towards the sword resting at his side.
"I have many like that." Ja'vassa nodded, lifting up the blade in response to her question. "This one, for instance, is known as Goldbrand. While it isn't one I created myself, it's a weapon I've held and cherished for many long years." He explained, unsheathing it to reveal the sharp, golden blade. Flames danced around the edge of it, creating a beautiful display. Despite the blazing fire, there didn't seem to be any change in the temperature surrounding them or the weapon itself. The books nearby weren't in any danger of catching alight, nor was Momiji under any risk of being burned.
The girl stared at the sword with a fascinated sparkle in her eyes. "It's... it's beautiful, Sensei. Can I ask about where it came from?" Momiji asked, almost tempted to touch the blade, but held back from doing so out of fear of being burnt.
"I received this after emerging victorious in Boethiah's Tournament of the Ten Bloods; a series of bloody battles held in her realm of Oblivion. I had to defeat nine opponents and survive until the end, and as my final opponent fell, I was given the sword you see here and a magical staff to commemorate my victory." Ja'vassa wore a relatively proud smile on his face as he recounted the tale, sheathing the weapon once more before setting it to the side.
The fascination in her eyes never disappeared as she listened to him, she didn't have a clue as to what Oblivion was or who Boethiah was, but the idea of her teacher valiantly battling against deadly opponents filled her head with fascinating daydreams. Clasping her hands together, Momiji leaned in a bit more, resting against his arm. "That's incredible, Sensei. It almost sounds like something from Two Piece! The valiant warrior fighting for a divine artifact."
Momiji's visit to the library started out as a usual day of reading and occasionally dealing with the troublemakers that frequent the library, but now, she found herself engrossed in Ja'vassa's tales of his past battles and the treasures he's found. "Do you have other stories like that, Sensei? Other great treasures or discoveries?" She asked, now clinging to his arm as she looked towards him expectantly.
"Many stories, yes. Long before I came to Kivotos, and before Sjel Blad was founded, I spent much of my time on the road; exploring old ruins in search of ancient artifacts. I've discovered old weapons, armors, scrolls, and ancient forms of magic. Some of those artifacts are currently housed in Sjel Blad's archives." Ja'vassa replied, adjusting himself slightly to make them both a little more comfortable.
Her imagination was running wild at this point, the idea of an entire room filled with ancient treasures sounded more and more like something she'd read about in her fantasy novels. "That sounds incredible, Sensei... I could only imagine all the stories they hold." Momiji replied cheerfully; she'd be bouncing in her chair if it wasn't for the way she clung onto him. "Maybe someday I'll be able to see those archives of yours. Or maybe you could tell me the story of your greatest discovery."
Ja'vassa paused, employing the use of the Deep Storage spell to create a mystical chest. Momiji watched with wide eyes as he opened the materialized chest and pulled out another sword. The single edged, blue colored blade came to life as the Dragonborn held it. A deep blue light shimmered, flowing across the blade; just being near it felt as if the temperature dropped by a few degrees. Given how cold Red Winter typically was, Momiji didn't seem to mind and continued to stare at the blade, captivated by the weapon's enchanting beauty.
"This is known as Silmeri; information about its origins have been scarce, but it's believed to have once been wielded by an ancient snow elven queen. Not only does it boast powerful lightning and ice enchantments, but it's also among the few surviving snow elven artifacts I've come across." Ja'vassa explained, softly caressing the sword for a moment. "It's been one of the most powerful tools in my arsenal since the day I discovered it within the Forgotten Vale." He then turned towards her, a tender smile crossing his face. "As for you seeing the archives... I am planning to return to Skyrim for a few days in the near future, before I make the journey to my home, I'll be sure to come and get you. I think you'd enjoy Sjel Blad's great library in particular, Momiji."
The invitation unintentionally caused her grip on Ja'vassa's arm to tighten as her obvious excitement grew. "Really?! You'd let me see the archives... and your library? That'd... that'd be incredible, Sensei!" Momiji replied cheerfully, "Is there anything I'll need for our journey? Weapons, clothing, anything else?" There were a million questions on her mind, and she was close to asking them all at once, but decided it wouldn't be a great idea to upset her teacher and potentially have him rescind his offer.
"I think what you have on now should be fine, so long as we avoid Winterhold and Eastmarch. Perhaps a heavier coat might help the further north we go. As for your weapons... carry only as much as you need. We won't have a chance to restock on ammunition until you return to Kivotos." Ja'vassa rubbed his chin for a moment, trying to decide on the places he'd show her. "I'll give you a proper tour of Skyrim, maybe show you some of the pieces of Sjel Blad Castle that not even the Imperials are aware of. Though... if I do that, I'll need to be sure you won't tell them to me." He added, a somewhat playful sound in his voice as he spoke.
"Of course, Sensei! I won't tell another soul, not even my fellow club members." Momiji assured him, puffing her cheeks out slightly. "When do you intend to take this trip? That way I can know when to work my schedule around it."
That was a good question, Ja'vassa didn't have a particular time in mind, but simply had plans for it in the near future. He was silent for several minutes, a light chuckle escaping him. "I hadn't even considered trying to figure that out before I mentioned it... but, give me about two weeks. That should give you time to get yourself prepared for it."
Making a mental note of the designated time, Momiji nodded eagerly. "I look forward to it! Though, can you tell me a little more about Sjel Blad Castle? I've heard you mention your Inner Council, who are they?"
Ja'vassa chuckled at the apparent torrent of questions that were coming his way. "My Inner Council is made up of my nine advisors, the people that have served me loyally for many long centuries. Leading the Council is Serica and Relumara, former apprentices of mine back when I was Archmage of Winterhold. The others I had met during the construction of Sjel Blad Castle and over the course of the first decade of its existence. The nine of them together make up the strongest force in Tamriel; individually, I'd consider each of them to be a one-man army."
Momiji listened intently, noting the obvious pride in Ja'vassa's tone as he spoke of them. "You were Archmage? That's... that's incredible, Sensei. Are you still Archmage today?"
Ja'vassa shook his head in response. "No, I abdicated the title as I spent far more time on the road than I did at the College; I found it was easier to conduct research and experiments while traveling, conducting my studies out in the field rather than holed up inside all the time. I still associate with the College, though, occasionally visiting to discuss recent findings and experiments."
For the next couple of hours, Momiji continued to bombard him with as many questions as she could think of and Ja'vassa gladly answered all that he could. Answering about the magic he uses, the weapons and treasures he's found, and all about Skyrim itself; Momiji's internal excitement for the upcoming trip continued to grow more and more with each question she asked, and if it wasn't for the fact that the day's final bell had gone off, she would've spent even more time asking more and more questions.
"I didn't realize how late it had gotten." Ja'vassa mused, looking towards the mess of books and papers on his desk. "I suppose I should consider heading back to SCHALE for now.. I'll be seeing you again soon, Momiji."
Momiji nodded, a slightly embarrassed blush dusting her cheek. "S-Sorry, Sensei. You came here to study and I... I took it over with all those questions." She rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly, looking away for a moment.
"Don't worry about it; a day spent with you is a day well spent. I'm glad I got to see you today." Ja'vassa assured her, gently petting the top of her head for a brief second. "Keep yourself safe, Momiji, and I'll come get you when it's time for our trip."
Momiji leaned into his hand, smiling up at him. "I can't wait, Sensei! Be sure to keep yourself safe as well."
With their final farewells, Ja'vassa gave her a quick wave as he'd make his way towards the Red Winter station for the long ride back to SCHALE. It wasn't exactly how he planned to spend his day at the library, but seeing the warm smile of his beloved student made his entire day better. The prospect of bringing her back to his home, allowing her to see the places that made him who he was today added a layer of excitement for the coming days.
