III. Fail
May 10, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Darkness. Muffled sounds. Elena hissed, her senses were clouded by what she had been given, she seemed to have been put to sleep. Her body ached. What had happened? A moment, and the memories swooped in with renewed vigor, causing panic and headaches.
She tried to pull herself together and assess the situation as her father had taught her. Feeling a slight movement, she found her wrists bound tightly with coarse rope. A dim light streamed through the uncurtained window - it was night.
Breathing slowly, soothingly, Elena looked around the sparse room. Old furniture, worn carpet - some kind of neglected flat. No sign of the kidnapper yet. She had to remain vigilant.
Calm turned to determination. Her family would come, she just needed to buy time. But putting the lessons learned into practice now, in the grip of fear, seemed impossible. The danger had only existed in made-up scenarios before, but now it was unimaginably real.
Elena remembered her father's admonition: be observant, look for opportunities. But her racing pulse gave away her growing panic. Alone in the dark, immobilized, her thoughts darted around in terror. Her head was crackling with pain, and a pile of thoughts that bound in a tight clump with panic.
Memories of home and family were her only solace in the growing darkness. She clung to faith in their unyielding determination. They would find evidence, track her down somehow. They had to do it...
For now, all she could do was stall for time, gather details that might help in the rescue, and pray that her inner courage would not falter for the time being. The future was a mystery, the most important thing was to survive in the present.
Footsteps were heard in the corridor. Panic gripped her again as the door swung open, revealing a guy, seemingly the same one who had carried her out of the school. But she would not let this man see her fear. She defiantly met his gaze, praying that her own actions and wits would be enough to withstand whatever happened next. Until help came... Somehow, her family would find her. She had to believe that.
A man's silhouette loomed in the doorway in the faint light of the corridor. Elena could only see the cold, emerald green eyes that reflected the light from the room's window. Despite the warm night, a chill ran through her body.
- "Good morning, princess." He murmured.
It was definitely the same voice with the harsh accent she had heard at school. She flinched as heavy footsteps approached her.
Kneeling down, he took her by the chin, turning her face from side to side as if inspecting cattle. Elena squeezed her eyes shut, her thoughts darting around. What did he want from her? Ransom, revenge, something else?
The kidnapper let go of her chin with a grunt.
- "Pretty little thing, aren't you? Too bad your dear captain Price can't save you." He muttered, in a sarcastic tone.
At the mention of her father, Elena's blood ran cold. So all this was no coincidence - the man knew them. But from where? And what game was he playing?
A game she didn't want to lose. Forcing herself to breathe evenly, Elena met his gaze.
- "You won't get away with this!" She swore, hoping there was more conviction than certainty in her words.
Shadows hid the man's expression, but his eyes glittered with a maddening hunger that chilled Elena more than any threat.
Something in her desperate oath struck a nerve. His demeanor changed in an instant, any pretence of equanimity gone. A moment, and he was looming over her, clenching his fists.
- "You think your daddy can save you? He's nothing!" The man hissed, through clenched teeth. Elena slumped against the wall, her heart pounding.
- "I should have killed him when I had the chance." He continued.
Fear and rage fought within her, but she knew that reacting would only make things worse. Elena steadfastly endured his sizzling stare.
- "You'll never get away with this." She repeated, this time more calmly.
A slapping sound and her head snapped to the side. Copper flooded her mouth as her lip parted. A slap... The man was shaking with rage and breathing heavily. For a moment, Elena thought he might end her life.
But instead he jabbed a finger at her.
- "Keep pushing me, you little bitch. We'll see what happens." His last words were barely more than an animal growl before he turned and slammed the door behind him, plunging the room back into darkness.
Elena lay on the floor, trembling. Her defiance had clearly touched a nerve with this man, and now she knew for certain that he wished her harm. More than ever before, she felt her salvation was a fragile, flickering hope...
As the voices faded away once more, Elena took a steadying breath. Her thoughts turned to the window across the room - her sole connection to the outside. Heart pounding, she shuffled toward it on her knees.
Peering out, she saw nothing but an empty alleyway three floors below, enclosed on both sides. No fire escapes in sight. Despair swelled until her eye caught on something - a thin metal drainpipe ran up the side of the building.
If she could somehow reach that pipe... But how? Bound and isolated as she was? Elena turned to scan the room again, this time with a new purpose. Her gaze fell upon a rusted metal coat rack in the corner, likely decades old.
A plan started forming - a risky one... But what choice did she have? As long as she could dislodge that rack and maneuver it near the window, she might be able to use it to climb down to freedom. But it would take all her strength and lucky timing. Could she pull it off before her captor returned? There was only one way to find out...
Elena steeled her nerves and got to work. First, she dragged herself over to the coat rack, giving it a testing push. It wobbled precariously but remained standing. Taking a steadying breath, she slammed her shoulder into it with all her weight.
The rusted metal resisted, then toppled with a crash that made her cringe. But no shouts came - she seemed to have got lucky. Wasting no time, Elena shoved and struggled until the heavy rack lay parallel to the wall by the window.
Heart pounding, she grasped the triangular top bar and pulled herself shakily to her feet. Her bound wrists made climbing awkward, but sheer willpower got Elena hoisted up until she could peer outside once more.
The drainpipe clung tantalizingly close just out of reach, not quite aligned with her makeshift ladder. Gathering her courage, Elena stretched a leg out as far as she could, toes scrabbling for purchase. Suddenly, her foot connected - the pipe was solid!
With immense effort and no room for error, Elena maneuvered herself out the window, hanging precariously three floors above the alley. Below, freedom beckoned, but first she had to slide down the drainpipe with her hands tied.
- "You can do this." She breathed, launching herself into the venture with the brave spirit that had seen her through so much already. Now comes the true test...
Elena slid tentatively down the first few feet of rusty pipe, heart in her throat. Below, the alley seemed to stretch on forever. But she had come too far to stop now. Gathering her nerve, she began descending more swiftly.
Just then, a shout rang out from above - her captor had discovered the empty room. Panic surged through Elena as heavy footsteps pounded the floor, coming closer to the window. She redoubled her effort, slipping faster toward salvation.
A deafening crash announced the man bursting onto the fire escape just as Elena hit the halfway point. She dared a terrified glance up to find his furious face glaring down - he had seen her escape attempt.
- "No! You bitch, get back here!" he screamed, beginning his own rapid descent. Terror lending her strength, Elena redoubled her pace, hands aching and sliding on the rough metal. Footsteps closed in behind as she neared the ground.
With a final desperate push, Elena launched herself from the last few feet, tucking into a roll as she hit the alley floor. Scrambling up, she made a mad dash for the open street - only to feel powerful hands seize her bound wrists from behind.
The man dragged Elena back, whip - like, throwing her to the ground.
- "You thought you could escape me?" He snarled, kicking her onto her back. She gazed up in terror, seeing only madness in his eyes...
Fear and adrenaline coursed through Elena as the man towered over her prone form. In a last act of defiance, she opened her mouth to scream with every ounce of breath in her lungs:
- "HELP! SOMEBODY PLEASE-"
Her cry was cut brutally short by a meaty hand clamping over her face, sealing off any sound. Elena thrashed beneath her captor's crushing weight, terror giving renewed strength to her struggles. But he only laughed, an ugly crowing sound through bared teeth.
- "No one's coming to save you, princess!" He hissed in her ear.
- "You think I'm stupid enough to keep you somewhere they can find?" He continued.
Elena squeezed her eyes shut, fighting tears. Her bold escape attempt had backfired catastrophically, trapping her further under this madman's control. All seemed lost... Until instincts took over.
Suddenly, Elena turned her head enough to sink her teeth into the hand that was choking her screams.
The man just hissed in pain and then backhanded her hard enough that stars exploded behind her eyes. From
such intense pain, further intensified by the recent headache, consciousness slipped from her.
