The morning began like any other for Daniel Carter. The sun peeked through his bedroom curtains, casting golden stripes across the rumpled sheets. His alarm buzzed at precisely 7:00 AM, and with a groan, he slapped it silent. Another ordinary day awaited him—another shift at the accounting firm, another evening of takeout and reruns. But fate had other plans. As Daniel shuffled into the kitchen, rubbing sleep from his eyes, he noticed something unusual on the counter. A small, weathered envelope lay beside his coffee maker, addressed to him in elegant, looping script. He frowned. He lived alone, and no one had been in his apartment last night. Curious, he tore it open. Inside was a single train ticket—one way—to a town called Eldermere. He had never heard of it. There was no note, no explanation, just the ticket and a departure time: 10:15 AM. Daniel checked his watch. It was already 8:30. If this was some kind of prank, it was elaborate. He considered tossing the ticket, but something tugged at him—an odd sense of familiarity, as if the name Eldermere meant something deep in his subconscious. Against his better judgment, he packed a small bag. Just in case. The train station was bustling, but the platform for the Eldermere line was eerily quiet. The train itself was an antique, its dark green paint gleaming under the station lights. No conductor checked his ticket as he boarded, and the few other passengers sat in silence, their faces hidden behind newspapers and hats. As the train pulled away, Daniel felt a strange shift in the air. The city skyline blurred, then vanished. The landscape outside the window changed too fast—forests thickened, mountains rose where none should exist, and the sky darkened with storm clouds that hadn’t been in the forecast. A soft voice spoke beside him. “First time to Eldermere?” Daniel turned. An elderly woman with sharp blue eyes smiled at him. Her hands, wrinkled with age, held a leather-bound book. “I—I don’t even know where Eldermere is,” he admitted. She chuckled. “Few do, until they’re meant to find it.” Before he could ask what that meant, the train lurched violently. The lights flickered. A deafening screech of metal filled the air as the world outside the windows spiraled into darkness. When the chaos settled, the train was no longer moving. The doors slid open on their own, revealing a mist-covered platform and a sign that read: WELCOME TO ELDERMERE. LEAVE YOUR PAST BEHIND. Daniel’s heart pounded. This was no ordinary trip. And his journey had only just begun.
