Description of a character

Settings
A description of a character’s appearance is an important element in creating a character’s image. It helps the reader imagine the character, conveys their character, social status, and even hidden personality traits. Here are some principles and techniques that will help make the description lively and natural. --- 1. Avoid “a list of features” Bad: “She was tall, with long black hair, green eyes, and thin lips. She wore a blue dress and black shoes.” Better: “Her height gave off confidence — she looked down on people, not trying to seem shorter. Black hair, gathered in a careless bun, stuck out in thin strands, as if resisting neatness. And when she smiled, her green eyes narrowed, as if assessing the interlocutor.” Why? Instead of a dry list of details, the description becomes part of the narrative, revealing the character. --- 2. Show appearance through actions and reactions Appearance should not hang in the air — it can be woven into the scene. Example: “He ran his hand over his stubble — short, barbed, like wire. Apparently, he shaved in a hurry: there was a patch of unshaven hair near his left ear.” This way, we not only learn that the hero is unshaven, but also understand that he was in a hurry or careless. -- 3. Use comparisons and metaphors But avoid cliches (“eyes like the ocean”, “hair like silk”). Good: “His hooked nose resembled the beak of a bird of prey — it seemed that he sensed weakness in everyone he spoke to.” Bad: “Her eyes were like two emeralds.” Why? The first comparison adds character, the second is just a cliche. --- 4. Clothes as a reflection of personality Clothes speak of status, habits, era. But do not list all the details of the wardrobe — highlight the key ones. Example: “The jacket sat perfectly on him, but the tie was tied carelessly — as if he had just taken it off and then changed his mind.” This may hint at fatigue, informality or internal conflict. -- 5. Accentuate one or two striking details The reader will not remember everything, but a striking detail will remain in the memory. Example: “There was a small mole on her left cheek — when she was nervous, she touched it with her finger, as if checking if it was in place.” This creates an “anchor” for the image. -- 6. Description through the gaze of another character If the hero is looking at someone, this is an opportunity to describe the appearance naturally. Example: “She noticed his hands first — wide palms, short-cut nails, traces of healed cuts. Working hands, unfamiliar with tenderness.” --- 7. Avoid cliches Bad: “Her beauty drove men crazy.” Better: “She wasn’t a beauty, but when she laughed, people turned around — as if trying to remember where the sound was coming from.” Why? Clichés don’t tell you anything about the character, but unusual details are memorable. --- 8. Consider the style and genre - Fantasy/historical: more details (fabric of dress, jewelry, weapon). - Thriller/noir: emphasis on gestures, shadows, imperfections. - Romance: looks, touches are important, but not too saccharine. --- Example of a successful description “He was a surprisingly modest and quiet man, even shy, but his voice had notes that made you obey him unquestioningly. His face was thin, his cheekbones were sharp, his eyes were gray, cold — the look of a man who was used to having the last word.” What works: - No listing of “height-weight-hair color”. - Appearance is connected with character. - Look and voice are memorable. --- Result: main rules 1. Don’t list — weave details into the narrative. 2. Show through actions (gestures, habits). 3. Highlight 1-2 striking features. 4. Avoid cliches (“angelic appearance”, “devilish look”). 5. Link appearance with character. The more natural the description is integrated into the text, the more alive the character will be.
