Chapter 1

Dusk and dawn can see the fighting,
Loud and screaming death arrives.
While the Scotts are slain or plighting,
Romans take their wretched lives.
Kenneth left the field of battle,
Fingers clasped forget-me-nots.
Hell enjoyed the warring rattle —
Heaven heard his loving thoughts.
Mem’ríes fade like rings on water,
Birds are feathering their nests.
In the field of woeful slaughter
Wedding greeted now its guests.
There’s no Roman standard drowning
In the blue forget-me-nots.
Mary’s hair their wreaths are crowning,
While she dances bridal waltz.
