Chapter 1. Introduction and help

The streets of the metropolis came alive with the first rays of artificial light. Neon reflections danced on glass facades as vehicles sped in every direction, creating the familiar hum of the city of the future. In this world, technology had merged so deeply with human life that the line between flesh and machine was nearly indistinguishable.
Christian always enjoyed his morning walks. The city inspired him, a place where ideas were born from the smallest details. But today, the morning was anything but ordinary.
On the bustling sidewalk, he spotted a man leaning heavily against a wall. His left arm twitched erratically like a faulty mechanism, and his chest rose and fell in labored breaths as if he couldn’t catch the air. Panic was etched on his face.
Christian didn’t hesitate for a second. Rushing over, he gripped the man’s shoulders.
“Hey, can you hear me?” the young scientist’s voice trembled with concern.
The man lifted his gaze. His blue eyes—a stark contrast to his ragged hair and scarred face—seemed icy but filled with pain. He nodded but couldn’t form words.
Quickly assessing the situation, Christian noticed the man’s left arm and leg were clearly bionic prosthetics, now seemingly malfunctioning. Without support, he could collapse at any moment.
“It’s going to be okay. I’ll help you,” Christian said firmly, slipping an arm under the stranger’s shoulders. The cool metal startled him for a moment, but he steadied himself.
With difficulty, he dragged the man to the nearest aero-taxi and gave the driver his lab’s address.
“Hang in there. We’re almost there,” Christian reassured him, while the man sat silently, teeth clenched, trying not to show how much he was struggling.
Minutes later, they arrived at a spacious building filled with equipment that seemed straight out of science fiction. Christian helped the man into a comfortable chair and connected his prosthetics to a diagnostic device.
“My name’s Christian. Can you speak?” he asked while attaching more sensors.
“Lucas,” the man finally managed to say, his voice low and slightly hoarse but remarkably calm.
“Nice to meet you, Lucas. Let’s see what’s going on here,” Christian said with a warm smile, trying to ease the tension.
The diagnostics quickly revealed that Lucas’s systems were outdated. His firmware hadn’t been updated in years, and some connections were on the brink of failure. It was a miracle they hadn’t given out earlier.
“Old model prosthetics?” Christian asked, glancing at the data.
“Yes,” Lucas nodded. “After the accident, I got these... couldn’t afford anything better.”
“Accident?” Christian paused, looking at him with newfound curiosity.
Lucas smirked faintly, as if he’d told the story too many times.
“Three years ago. Car crash. Lost an arm, a leg, and a couple of organs. Survived thanks to these,” he gestured to his bionic arm.
“I’m sorry,” Christian said softly, continuing his work.
Lucas shrugged.
“It’s fine. I’ve gotten used to it,” he replied, though there was a hint of bitterness in his tone.
As Christian worked to fix the malfunctions, he couldn’t help but notice how striking Lucas was. Despite the prosthetics, his body was strong, and the scars on his skin gave him a rugged charisma. Yet beneath it all lay so much pain that Christian felt a growing desire to help, beyond just his professional duty.
After a couple of hours, the diagnostics and repairs were complete.
“Try moving your arm,” Christian said, disconnecting the devices.
Lucas slowly clenched his fingers into a fist, then opened them again.
“It works. Better than before,” he said, surprised, looking at Christian.
“It’s a temporary fix,” Christian replied. “Your prosthetics need a full upgrade. If you’re willing, I can take care of it.”
“You want to help me… for free?” Lucas frowned, his suspicion evident.
“Let’s just say it’s my job,” Christian replied with a smile. “And… I just want you to feel better.”
Lucas was silent for a long moment, then slowly nodded.
“Then… thank you.”
Christian’s smile widened.
“You’re welcome. From now on, we’re a team.”
And from that moment, their lives began to change.
