Chapter 28

Honi spent most of her time in her room, simply staring at the wall. The turquoise walls and blue curtains were melancholy. Despite the light breeze coming from the streets, there was no scent of flowers. The pristine white carpet, although luxurious, felt cold and impersonal. The bookshelf stood empty and abandoned. The only hint of functionality was the television and the wall clock, which served as a reminder that time was passing too quickly. The paintings seemed dull and lifeless. In the corner, there was a lone potted plant next to an empty blue polka-dot mug, the tea in which had long since run out. Breakcore was playing in her headphones, Honi tried to distract herself from all the bad thoughts, but she was overcome by a deep sadness that she could not express in words. She sat on her blue bed, Zhmak sleeping next to her. The soft light from the window fell on her amber eyes, they looked beautiful, but something was missing... That sparkle they gave off when life seemed carefree to her...
She heard a man's voice over the music: "Honidesu..."
Honi took off her headphones and saw Henry standing in the doorway.
"We've been through so much together... and now she's gone..." Honi said, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I know how close you and Bonnie were..." Henry said with a deep sigh, his voice shaking with emotion.
He stepped closer to her and sat down next to her, their shoulders almost touching.
"But you're not alone, remember that," Henry continued, his hand gently resting on her shoulder.
"Yes, thank you..." Honi replied, sobbing. "I just don't know what to do next..."
"It's normal to feel depressed after such a loss. Let's just start with you getting some rest. And then we'll try to distract ourselves together..."
"Yes, you're right... " the girl sniffled, trying to hold back her tears.
Henry and Honidesu sat in silence for a while.
"What was Maria like?" Honi suddenly asked, a hint of sadness in her voice.
Henry sighed heavily, as if the weight of the whole world was on his shoulders. But he collected his thoughts and began to tell: "Maria was a real ray of sunshine. She always brought joy to others, sincerely tried to find light even in the darkest corners of life... She knew how to make me smile just by her presence. Her sweet smile could melt even the coldest heart..."
"What happened to her?"
"I remember that day... Maria was walking home from college, and I was waiting for her not far from home, but the mocker attacked her. I immediately rushed to her, the patrolmen joined me. Apparently, they were trying to catch up with that damned thing... We pulled the monster away, I called an ambulance and carried her home. I tried to help her with all my might... But when the doctors arrived, they said that she was no longer breathing..."
"I'm so sorry, Henry..."
The man smiled softly, adjusting his glasses. Honi's gaze fell on the photograph hanging on the wall. It depicted a pretty woman with green eyes and light loose hair.
"What happened to her mother?" Honidesu asked.
"I loved Daisy... Maria and I did everything we could to help her... The doctors determined that she had a brain aneurysm. The disease got the better of her, and she eventually died before the operation... It was a hard time..." he sighed, as if remembering every detail of that painful period.
"Oh, I'm really sorry..." Honi said, feeling his bitterness.
"It's okay. You know, I should learn from you... I heard your words in the company... Sometimes we can't control everything around us, and it's important to be able to let go. You were right: I made a mistake thinking that I could bring my daughter back to life... But... It's better to focus on what we can control, to make the world a little better... And I don't regret that you appeared in my life."
"You're a good person... and a wonderful father..." Honi said with warmth in her voice.
She hugged Henry tightly, and he returned the hug. At that moment, their hearts seemed to connect in one rhythm - the rhythm of understanding and support.
"Janet will be here soon. If you want, you can join us. We will spend time together. Bring Zhmak with you too!" Henry smiled, his voice filled with hope.
"I'll think about it..." Honi answered uncertainly.
"If anything, we'll be in the hall."
When Henry left the room, Honi continued to sit, lost in her thoughts, which swirled around in her head like a whirlwind. Each thought was heavy as a stone, and with each passing second she felt more and more the weight of inaction on her chest. The girl stood up, her legs shaking slightly, and went to the mirror, where the reflection showed not only her face, but also all the emptiness that filled her soul. Standing in front of the mirror, Honi noticed a pair of scissors on the table. Their shiny blades sparkled in the dim light of the room, and her gaze was drawn to them like a moth to a flame. The feeling of emptiness called to her, pushing her to make the decision she had been putting off for so long. At that moment, she took the scissors in her slightly trembling hands. The weight of the blades seemed almost cleansing to Honi, as if they could finally help her put an end to the pain that would not let her go for a minute... She swung the scissors sharply, two sharp blades reached her neck...
A slight chill blew into the room, and the silence became so oppressive that it seemed even the air stopped breathing. The wind outside rushed through the open windows, fluttering the curtains and creating the illusion of movement in this dead space. There were no other sounds - only silence, which reminded her that every moment could be her last.
Zhmak twitched his ears and opened his eyes, only waking up from sleep, he saw Honi...
