Chapter 4

In Henry's office, Janet, and Neil sat down at the table and began to discuss Honi. Neil didn't have to talk to Janet and Henry for long to fully understand the situation.
"Oh, look, I'm sorry to say this, but we can't leave it like this. This new personality is completely unacceptable, she needs to be remade back into Maria, the way she was supposed to be!" Neil said, slapping his hands on the table.
"But she's not just a program, she's... she's alive! Why can't she stay? This isn't a mistake, it's a miracle!" Janet countered.
"It's our legal responsibility to deliver Maria to our client. We can't just let this incomprehensible semblance of human life continue to live as a person."
Janet looked upset, she knew the company had to fulfill their promise, but she also wanted to stand up for Honi's freedom.
"Yeah, but she's alive now. We can't just erase her personality..."
"What about our obligation to deliver Maria as she was meant to be? That's unfair to Henry. What if he wants to sue us if we don't provide this service?" Neil pressed.
"Henry would never do that! Do you think he'd sue us if she stayed like that? He wouldn't!" Janet countered again. "Henry?"
Henry found himself in the middle, not wanting to upset the company, but also wanting to support Honi's new independence. The man sighed and looked at Janet, then back at Neil.
"I don't know... I know I wanted Maria, but like Janet said, she's not just a program anymore. She's a living being now, and it seems cruel to erase her so suddenly... But I also can't blame the company for wanting to provide a service I originally paid for..."
"Unfortunately, we don't have a choice in the matter. We have a legal obligation, and although Henry may have accepted it, we can't just ignore those terms. The contract clearly states that we must deliver Maria as described, and we can't just change our minds," Neil replied coldly, walking up to the window with his arms crossed. "Plus, we don't know how she'll behave, what if something goes wrong? The responsibility will be on us, our company!"
Janet and Henry remained silent, knowing that Neil was right. They both hated the idea of erasing Honi, but unfortunately, they couldn't get around the contract.
Janet found a way to quietly leave the office, leaving Henry and Neil alone to argue. She walked up to Honi and decided to tell her everything. Miss Harper already knew that she could possibly be fired for what she did, but she didn't want the girl to be killed.
"Honidesu, I need to tell you something important... The company is planning to erase you and return you to Maria, because that's what Henry was supposed to get. I... I have to deliver Maria to Henry, but it hurts me even to think about it. I don't want them to erase you. You deserve to live!" Janet was saying. "I'm afraid that after this I'll get fired, but please, run before it's too late! Our director Neil is a real perfectionist, he can't be persuaded!"
Honi looked at Janet, realizing that she had decided to risk her job to help her. She quickly tried to think, thinking about the situation: "Run..."
The girl was still looking at Janet with a worried expression. Honi didn't know what would happen when she went outside... Would she be able to survive in the real world? Seeing no other choice, she followed Janet's advice and decided to run away from the building.
Miss Harper just watched her go, conflicted. She hadn't expected things to go this way. Janet felt responsible for helping Honidesu escape.
At that moment, Neil came out of the office and saw Honi running away. He got angry and ran after her, but didn't have time to catch up with her. Neil went to the wall located near the exit and called the agents by pressing a special call button.
"Find her, catch her and bring her back here, now! We can't let her escape!"
The agents scattered in all directions, looking for Honi and trying to bring her back to the company.
Honi ran as fast as she could, she was already in the center of the city. The girl saw the streets and squares covered with a blanket of snow. A cold wind drove snowflakes everywhere. The sky was clear. Suddenly, she felt someone's hand sharply grab her shoulder. The girl turned her head and saw one of Neil's agents. He was wearing gray-green armor and a helmet that covered half of his face.
"W-what? Have they caught me? Is this the end?" she thought in panic.
"Hey, you're coming with me!" the man in armor said.
Honidesu tried to break free, but the agent held her tightly and began to drag her back to the building.
"If you continue to resist, then I am allowed to use force!" the agent threatened.
"I don't want to die!" the girl thought, fear completely consuming her.
The agent couldn't take it anymore and tried to twist the girl, but she started to glitch, her eyes became like amber noise. When she glitched, a bright blue flash filled the space around them, as if reality itself had been changed by the girl's abilities. The agent fell to the ground, the snow-covered sidewalk changed color to burgundy.
People were shocked by what was happening, Honi came to her senses and looked at everything in horror.
"What happened? I k-killed a person?!"
She couldn't believe what she had just done, because she was not a killer. But she had no other choice: if Honi was brought back, she would most likely be killed too. The girl ran away from the crime scene, but it was too late, because some people managed to film the aftermath on video and she would probably end up in the news as a killer...
