Chapter 1. The big bonfire

Settings
The girl was rushing around the room in one sock, looking for the missing second one. She tossed things from place to place, looking under the beds and in all corners. The day started badly. Lyra had felt from the very morning that this was going to be the worst day of her life in the boarding house. The school year had just begun, and her whole nervous system was already bursting at the seams. The wind playfully carried bright autumn leaves outside the window, and the gentle sun illuminated the fairly spacious room with its rays. Two beds faced each other, next to each one was a small wooden bedside table and desk. The girl loved such clear weather a lot, and if it weren’t for the lost sock, she’d be enjoying life right now. “Where could it have gone?” A pretty brown-haired girl with wavy hair just below her shoulders and freckles muttered irritably to herself as she rummaged through the dresser. Strands of hair were climbing into her face, which was even more infuriating. “At last!” She proudly snatched her trophy from the huge pile of clothes and quickly put it on her leg. Now she could go down for breakfast. After picking up and putting on a heavy backpack full of textbooks, Lyra rushed out of the room and through the corridors to the dining hall. On her way, she met almost no one except a few teachers and a small group of friends who were engaged in conversation and paid no attention to her. It wasn’t long before breakfast was over. “Five minutes will be enough for a bun and juice,” Lyra calculated, and then she consoled herself, “Well, alright, but I’ll make up for it at lunch.” “Why are you so late?” Julia who was a short-haired brunette with large rectangular glasses asked as her panting friend plopped down on the nearest chair. “You usually get up at the crack of dawn, but you came by the end of breakfast today. What’s wrong?” The sincere excitement of an old acquaintance was reflected in her brown-yellow eyes. “It’s okay”, Lyra immediately grabbed a bun, bit off most of it, and said, “The sock got lost and I’ve been jumping around like a fool all morning.” Julia looked at her in surprise and then burst into laughter, choking on her tea. But she wasn’t embarrassed at all and continued laughing, ignoring the disapproving glances from other students. “Well, you do give!” She practically moaned through her laughter. “Do you have another pair of socks?” “Not just one,” Lee paused, sipping her orange juice, “two. Only one is dirty.” Lyra was about to add something more pungent, and had already taken a deep breath, when the bell rang to announce the end of breakfast and the beginning of classes. The students picked up their backpacks and left the dining room, heading to the literature classroom. The lesson was incredibly boring. Mr. Reed gave a long lecture on Shakespeare, ignoring the disinterested students. He did not do a good job. At the end of the lesson, he lost his temper, scolded most of the class, and threatened that they would fail the exam at the end of the year. Most of the rest of the day was the same. Everyone was either talking or lying on their desk. And all this was because tonight, all the students at the boarding school were allowed to go outside and light a large autumn bonfire. It was a special tradition. It is believed that at this campfire, people find their best friends with whom they can be together in joy and sorrow. Some believed in these stories, some did not, but nobody wanted to go to bed early, so everyone was waiting for the night of the big bonfire. Lyra had just enrolled in this school this year and was more worried than others. At nine o’clock she was one of the first to rush out onto the street. A few guys had already gathered wood, and a boy had matches and was trying to light the fire. The dark sky, studded with stars, loomed over the students majestically. The moon slid out from behind the clouds, and at one point, the young girl thought it winked at her. “It seems that today is not as terrible as it seemed at first,” she thought. There were enthusiastic cheers and joyful oohs. Lyra looked from the sky to the ground. A huge bonfire illuminated a small space around itself and the cheerful faces of boys and girls. Then the movement began: many wanted to be closer to the fire, others preferred to stay away. Snatches of phrases and dialogues were heard here and there. By the way, where is Julia? The girl turned around in search of her friend. She fell far behind while the others ran ahead. “Ju!” Lyra called. “Joo-oo-ooo!!!” No one answered, but the girl continued to look around and search. Lee accidentally stepped on the foot of some guy with tousled hair and an unpleasant face. “Hey!” He was indignant, “Watch where you’re going stupid teenager” She walked past him and pretended she hadn’t heard anything. But suddenly, something clicked in her head. Her face was covered in crimson spots and her head was boiling. She became very hot and girl doubted it was from the fire, as her temperature always rose when she was angry. “I’m not a child, blond!” “Damn temper,” a fleeting thought flashed before the boy turned back and glared at her. “What’s going on here? Amias?” A resonant voice came from above, right over Lyra’s ear, sending a herd of goosebumps running through her body. All her fervor had instantly cooled. “Don’t come in here, Dan. It’s none of your business.” “Actually, it is,” the other replied calmly, “This girl is my sister.” The stranger theatrically embraced the girl, drawing her to him, causing Lyra to shudder again. Who was he? It was clear that this man was just trying to help, but it was uncomfortable under the pompous gaze of the boy. “So, you’re in league with him?” the blond boy asked strangely, making a nasty grimace and stepping aside, all the while looking back at the girl as if he was afraid she would attack him from behind. When the one named Amias was at a decent distance, the stranger awkwardly removed his hand from Lyra’s shoulder, saying, “Sorry, I had to scare him a little.” The girl looked at him. His face was lit up by a guilty smile, his black hair covered part of his face, and he had a working callous on his chin. There were no nails on his hands. The girl noticed the violinist. Her gaze stopped at a pendant in the shape of a black rose hanging around his neck, and she smiled back. Their eyes met, and they held each other’s gaze for a few seconds. For a moment, the girl felt as if time had stopped, and the clouds in the sky seemed frozen. “I’m Daniel, by the way”, he held out his hand in a friendly gesture. “I’m Lyra”, the girl shook hand in return. “Here you are! I was looring for you tverywhere! Come on!” Julia grabbed Lyra’s arm and pulled her into the crowd, Lee only managed to wave goodbye to her “brother”. Dragging Lyra away from the noisy kids and teens, Julia began to talk about how worried she was, how she was searching for her friend, but Lee was calmly talking with someone else. “You’re not listening at all,” Julia sighed, following Lyra’s gaze, “Did you fall for that guy?” she asked mockingly, noticing the other’s frightened look, “Lee, this is the first time you met him, is it possible to fall for someone you don’t know?” She laughed again and then hugged her friend enthusiastically. “Come on, my dear. Let’s go inside and talk about what we want to do before you rush into his arms.” The girls walked towards the building, leaving a strange night behind them and a stranger at the dying campfire.
