Chapter 1
March 7, 2024 at 1:16 PM
Dee did not expect that his first love would come to him completely spontaneously. That she would burst into his life like a stormy but sweet hurricane and look into his soul with brown, red-tinged eyes. Dee never believed that this could happen to him, a cold cynic, but it seems that fate destroyed his stereotypes. After his first personal meeting with Lif, he didn’t even have time to notice how he became dependent on her smile, gentle voice, the intoxicating, cherry smell of her perfume, ringing laughter and charming impetuosity. Dee never imagined that someday he would be so shy in front of a girl and that he would be so glad that she agreed to be friends with him. Despite the fact that Heavy slightly spoiled his older brother’s plan, Lif still agrees to go with him to the concert of his favorite band, and from that moment their two-month live communication began, and it is worth admitting that Dee liked it much more than communication through correspondence. Because every moment spent next to her became special for him.
Dee loves to listen to her voice when Lif tells him something, he loves how funny and cute the girl twists an unruly strand of hair on her finger, which always climbs onto her forehead, and he also madly loves the warmth of her gaze, which makes his heart melt and stop for a moment only to start knocking again in a new rhythm for Dee. The guy really wanted to believe that his sympathy for her was mutual, but Dee still does not dare to ask Lif about this, he believes that the time for this has not yet come. He decided to wait for the right atmosphere to confess. And it is desirable that Heavy is not around, always ruining all plans. In the meantime, he has to be content with only friendship.
The school bell, and then the noise of classmates rising from their desks, tear Dee out of sweet thoughts about her first love. The guy’s mood was ruined by Diana’s latest intrigues. Dee thought that after he set up his classmate by giving her the wrong clue as punishment for looking at him shamelessly, she would leave him alone. But Diana continued to show signs of sympathy for him, and then got angry every time she was refused. Dee left the school, went to the nearest tree and began to look at the students from a parallel class leaving the building; he is waiting for Lif, who, as always, was one of the last to leave the school building. Dee and Lif had a good tradition of walking home from school together, which they were both very happy about.
And then the guy sees a familiar figure on the threshold of the school, which causes a warm smile to appear on his lips. Lif stops for a moment and looks for him among the crowd, and thanks to her powers of observation, Dee notices that she looks a little sad. Judging by the girl’s dissatisfied face, someone managed to ruin her mood. But noticing her friend, the girl immediately perked up and rushed to him.
— Hi, Dee, — Lif gives the guy a radiant smile, which shows that she is sincerely glad to see him. She still looked a little upset though.
— Hi, — Dee answers her, — what happened? You look a little upset. Lousy day?
A barely noticeable shadow creeps across Lif’s face.
— He really is lousy, — she replies, — today it’s like everyone conspired to make me angry! The teacher picked on me throughout the whole lesson, and then my classmates saw my drawings and started laughing at them!
In a flash of anger, Lif stomped her foot angrily, her fingers clenching the notepad in her hand. Dee thought that the second situation upset the girl more.
— Sorry, I didn’t want to remind you of the bad things, — Dee confusedly adjusted the strap of his school bag on his shoulder. He would like to somehow support the girl he really likes, but the guy, due to his coldness, simply does not know how to support and console.
— It’s okay, don’t worry, — Lif shyly looks away for a moment, as if ashamed of his outburst, — it’s not your fault that I’m having a lousy day today.
— I understand you, I’m having a lousy day today too, — Dee comes closer and puts her hand on her friend’s shoulder, — don’t be upset and don’t take ridicule to heart, you know very well that your drawings are wonderful.
The attempt at consolation is banal and clumsy, but judging by the girl’s answering smile, it worked. Lif noticeably perks up and answers:
— I know that, but… You’re right, it really doesn’t matter, — the girl hesitated mid-sentence, and then continued with her characteristic enthusiasm. — Really, why am I so upset about two bitches who can’t even draw a banal flower!
— That’s the attitude I like better, — Dee said and smiled, glad that he could cheer Lif up a little.
— Well, shall we go home? — Meanwhile, Lif asks, to which Dee pauses.
— Listen, would you like to go to the park and sweeten up our lousy day with a portion of delicious ice cream? I’ll treat you, — the guy suggested after a moment’s thought.
Lif thought for a moment, and then, tilting her head to the side, smiled slyly and, narrowing her eyes, asked:
— Are you asking me out on a date?
Dee is taken aback for a second by the suddenness of the question, and then his face turns red in embarrassment, to which Lif laughs loudly.
— Dee, I was joking, — she said, laughing, — but seriously, I’m not against your proposal. — she adds quietly, twirling a strand of hair around her finger with an embarrassed smile.
“I wish this wasn’t a joke,” — the thought flashes through Dee’s head, but then, regaining his usual composure, the guy clears his throat and says:
— Well then, let’s go.
— Let’s go, — Lif replies, and the pair head towards the park.
Fifteen minutes later, Dee and Lif were already eating two scoops of delicious chocolate ice cream, laughing and chatting happily.
— My lips are probably stained with chocolate now, — Lif says, taking another bite of the cold sweetness.
The corners of the girl’s lips were indeed slightly stained with chocolate, which makes Dee smile tenderly, because Lif now looked like a little charming child who was given sweetness. Suddenly, Dee had a mischievous idea to cheer Lif up even more, causing a sly grin to bloom on his lips. He looks at her for a second and then says in a joking tone:
— Yes, you are a charming grubby little girl gets.
He then takes the ice cream on his finger and gently runs it across Lif’s nose, completely covering him in the ice cream. The girl, who did not expect such a turn of events, freezes for a moment, and Dee is afraid for a second that his joke has offended Lif, but when reciprocal mischief appears in her eyes, the anxiety recedes, but it turns out that he relaxed early.
— Oh, you scoundrel! — Lif approaches Dee, who didn’t even have time to utter a word before his cheek was also stained with ice cream. — Take that!
They look at each other for a second, realizing how funny they look now, and then they both laugh loudly. It’s good that there weren’t too many people in the park and two teenagers just having fun didn’t bother anyone too much. After laughing and wiping themselves off with wet wipes found in Lif’s bag, they slowly walked home. When Dee brought Lif home, the girl, in a fit of emotion, hugged him tightly goodbye.
— Thank you, — she says, nuzzling her nose into the crook of his neck, making his heartbeat quicken, — for holding me up and cheering me up after a lousy day.
Once upon a time, someone else’s touch would have angered Dee, but now he happily hugs Lif back, inhaling the pleasantly intoxicating aroma of cherries.
— All right, well, you’re welcome. — Dee replies, wishing deep down that this special moment would last as long as possible.
But Lif still breaks the hug and goes to the door of his house.
— See you tomorrow, — the girl says, throwing a tender and warm glance goodbye.
— Yeah, see you tomorrow, — Dee tells her before Lief disappears out the door.
All the way home, Dee replayed today in his head again and again, and especially Lif’s farewell hugs, hiding this moment in the most intimate corner of his memory, where this wonderful memory would be stored for a very long time. There was a pleasant warmth in the chest, warming the guy from the inside, and his soul seemed to be about to sing. Dee happily experiences these sensations, although they are new to him, but incredibly sweet and special. Today left a pleasant mark on his soul.
* * *
The sky, which had recently been clear, was suddenly occupied by gray heavy clouds during the day, which threatened to rain down cold drops of torrential rain on the city at any moment. Dee, having looked at the weather forecast in the morning, prudently took an umbrella with him to school, so the sudden rain that started outside did not become a particular problem for him. Coming downstairs after class, Dee heard a familiar and beloved voice loudly scolding the dramatically changed weather. Only one girl in the world could swear so funny and cute.
— Bitch! Damn rain! — Lif looked with longing at the torrential downpour, which did not even think of ending.
“And how did I manage to forget and not take an umbrella with me?!” — Lif thought sadly. But her father warned her that it would rain. And Dee also wrote a couple of times in his correspondence that Lif should take an umbrella with her. Lif sighed sadly. Now she will have to wait out the bad weather at school, because she clearly didn’t want to get wet and get sick.
— I see someone forgot their umbrella, — Lif turned her head towards the voice and met the guy’s blue eyes.
— Oh, for God’s sake, Dee, don’t start, — the girl waved him off, not wanting to listen to Dee’s next lecture about her absent-mindedness, — I’m already punished by being stuck here until this damn rain stops.
Dee smiled and walked up to Lif.
— I don’t agree with you, — he said, taking out an umbrella, and then continued in a caring voice, — we’re going to the same place anyway, and two people can easily fit under my umbrella. What do you think about my idea?
Lif looks at him and smiles shyly.
— But I don’t want to embarrass you or be a burden, — she said timidly.
Dee sighed, clicked his tongue, and rolled his eyes.
— Don’t be stupid, — he said confidently, opening his umbrella, — let’s go already.
“You definitely won’t be a burden to me,” — thought Dee as Lif shrugs and stands under the umbrella. They walked home in silence, listening to the raindrops drumming on the fabric of the umbrella. But this silence was not tense or unpleasant; on the contrary, they simply enjoyed the silent presence next to each other. Lif takes the guy by the elbow, and they slowly walk forward. Dee caught himself thinking that he really liked taking care of Lif, and she, in turn, began to increasingly catch herself thinking that she was very comfortable next to Dee.
Over so many months, she and Dee have become very close, and Lif can’t help but notice it. The girl is already accustomed to the fact that he is always nearby. Dee is a wonderful friend, just a friend, isn’t he? Lif suddenly remembers how Dee sometimes looks at her. A spark of warmth always appeared in his usually ice-cold eyes when he looked at her, and at such moments the girl loved to admire the beauty of his eyes… Lif quickly discards these thoughts that suddenly rushed over her.
— Lif, is everything okay? — Dee asks worriedly, noticing her thoughtfulness.
— Yeah, it’s okay, I’m just a little tired, — Lif answers too quickly, blushing slightly because she hasn’t thought about Dee in a romantic way until now. What came over her today?
— Here you are at home, — Dee says when they reach their destination. The guy leads her to the door.
Lif turns and looks into his eyes.
— Thank you, — she says, — you are my knight today, without you I would still be sitting in the school corridor or, most likely, I would be wet in the rain because I would be kicked out.
— Knight… — Dee said thoughtfully, — it’s a pity that Heavy isn’t here, he would pass for a faithful knight’s squire, — he joked, to which Lif chuckles.
- Yes, perhaps, — the girl replies.
They look into each other’s eyes for a second, both fascinated, both unable to tear themselves away from each other. Dee can’t resist being the first to be affectionate, and with a gentle movement he tucks a strand of black hair behind the girl’s ear.
— Next time, just pay close attention to the weather forecast and don’t forget your umbrella, okay? — says the guy with a soft smile.
Lif smiles back.
— I’ll try, — she says, — but I can’t promise anything, especially after such a pleasant walk under one umbrella. — the girl adds half-jokingly, half-seriously, to which they both laugh.
Lif’s gaze fleetingly glanced at Dee’s lips and lingered there for a second. “Why do I want to kiss him so much? — the thought flashes, — why do I want him to kiss me so much?” The girl shakes her head, driving away the obsession.
— Well, bye, see you tomorrow, — she says quickly.
— Bye, see you tomorrow, — Dee replies, after which the girl disappears outside the door of her house.
Inside the house, Lif leans against the door, placing a hand on the left side of her chest, trying to calm her heart beating wildly against her ribs and regulate her suddenly rapid breathing. “What is happening to me?” — she asks herself this question again and again…
* * *
Hello, would you like to take a walk with me through an abandoned high-rise building this evening? Today is Friday, there is no school tomorrow, so we could go for a longer walk. It’s not that I’m scared alone, it’s just that it will be calmer and more fun with you. I also want to show you something cool. What do you think about this idea?
Dee read the message from Lif and thought about it. He always doesn’t mind going for a walk with her and perhaps it is there that he will finally be able to take the most important step for them. After a minute of reflection, he wrote:
Of course I do not mind.
When will we meet?
The answer from Lif came immediately:
Cool! Then meet me at midnight near my house.
Fine
Having written the last message, Dee put the phone aside and went to prepare for the meeting. Once everyone is asleep, escaping through the window won’t be too difficult. Today was a moonlit night, and the road to Lif’s house was well lit. Seeing her friend from afar, the girl waved her hand in greeting and rushed towards him.
— Well, are you ready for the night’s adventures? — Lif asks cheerfully.
Dee spread his arms to the sides.
— Well, since I’m here… — he answered laconically, laughing nervously.
Lif smiles encouragingly and takes his hand, giving Dee a pleasant shiver.
— Don’t be afraid, little coward, — she winked at the guy, — it’s not as scary as it seems.
Dee completely disagreed with her in this belief, but he didn’t want to seem like a coward.
— I’m not a coward, — Dee said, frowning, offended by the girl’s words.
— Come on, don’t be offended, I’m just joking, let’s go already. — Lif pulled the guy forward by the hand, to which he just sighed and obediently followed her.
The abandoned seven-story building on the outskirts of the city looked completely inhospitable at first glance, but upon closer inspection it turned out to be not so formidable. At least, thank God, they didn’t meet anyone here. With these thoughts, Dee helps Lif take a couple of photos for her Instagram, then they explored a couple of floors, and then Lif dragged him to the roof.
— When we get up there, you’ll see that we didn’t come here in vain! — the girl said to the already pretty tired guy, who, nevertheless, seeing her joy and enthusiasm, was ready to follow her anywhere.
But when they were on the roof, and Lif, seemingly not at all tired during this time, leads him to the edge, Dee agrees that the view before them is worth the climb here. The night city spread out before them, as if in the palm of their hand. And in the sky there were billions of stars that miraculously harmonized with the lights of the night city. Dee looks forward in fascination, and Lif just watches his admiration with a smile.
— Usually the stars are not so clearly visible, — the girl broke the silence, — so we were lucky today.
The guys took out their phones to take pictures of this wonderful view.
— You know, I don’t regret at all that I’m here now, with you, — Dee said when he and Lif had already photographed everything and were simply admiring the view, holding hands. — I’m glad you decided to take me with you.
Lif smiles and squeezes his hand tighter.
— I’m also glad you’re here with me now, even though you didn’t think it was a good idea at first, yeah, I saw your face at the beginning, — she giggled as Dee wanted to dispute the girl’s words. — But nevertheless, you are here for me and… — Lif looks into his alluring eyes, — I really appreciate it.
A cool wind swept across the roof, ruffling Lif’s loose hair and blowing cold air over the teenagers.
— It will be dawn soon, — Dee said, noticing how the sky in the east gradually began to brighten, little by little “eating” more and more stars.
— Uh-huh, — Lif says, — we’ll have to go home soon.
The cold wind blows on them again, and Lif, wearing a thin sleeveless vest, begins to shiver, which does not go unnoticed by Dee. The guy took off his denim jacket and threw it over the girl’s back, hugging Lif from behind. Her shoulders tensed a little at first, apparently just from surprise, because after a second she immediately relaxed in his arms. Lif felt the best right now. She just felt good, warm, cozy… Her head naturally leans back on Dee’s shoulder, as if it should be so, and her eyes close from the pleasant sensations.
— I can get used to this, — she says quietly, not even realizing she said it out loud until she hears Dee answer.
— And I would really like… — his voice sounds a little uncertain from embarrassment, but sincere, — so that you get used to being next to me.
These words cause Lif to open her eyes wide and turn to face Dee. Now there are only a few millimeters between them.
— If you don’t mind, — Dee finishes quietly, drowning in the eyes opposite.
Lif’s heart stops, and then begins to beat again in a new rhythm, not yet realized by the young mind.
— I don’t mind, — the girl says quietly, exhaling, as if afraid to frighten away this magical moment.
This answer fills Dee’s soul with joy from the realization that his feelings are mutual. His fingers carefully and tenderly touch the cheek of the now finally beloved girl, she duplicates this movement on his cheek.
— Dee, — says Lif, continuing to drown in the bottomless blue of the guy’s eyes, they are so captivating, attractive… — I’ve been wanting to do something.
Her gaze moves to his lips, and then the girl meets his eyes again…
Yes, damn it, she will now do what she has wanted for so long…
Lif overcomes those insignificant millimeters that separate them and covers Dee’s lips with her lips, drawing them both into the first, timid, slightly inept, but so intoxicating and sweet kiss. Dee is embarrassed for a moment, but a second later he kisses the girl back. Their hearts beat in unison, and their heads are pleasantly spinning from a flurry of new, sweetly intoxicating, bright sensations for both of them. Lif and Dee break the kiss, but their noses are still touching. The lovers exchange timid glances. Realizing what just happened between them, both blush deeply and smile shyly.
— Have they told you that you’re incredibly cute when you’re embarrassed? — Lif asks after a moment of awkward silence.
— Mutually, Lif, mutually, — Dee answers her, and they both laugh a joyful, happy laugh.
Around them, the dawn is already beginning to come into its own, and they both meet this dawn, the dawn of their love, with radiant smiles and eyes full of love.
In the evening they were still friends, but dawn had already found two incredibly happy lovers with each other…
