Chapter 28

A man of about forty becomes Azriel’s passenger and asks to be taken to one of the residential areas. He puts a large gray suitcase in the trunk and gets into the car.
— Did you go on vacation? — the taxi driver made an assumption.
- No, on a business trip. I would go on vacation with my family, — the man answered.
- It’s clear. In principle, I could have guessed it. Where did you go? — asked the driver.
- To Yekaterinburg. There is a factory there, I went to check it, — said the passenger.
- So you are an inspector? So how’s the check? — Azriel asked.
- Not bad. I liked it there. By the way, a very good plant. It’s not bad with security, and with turnover, and with salaries, — the man said, — I went with my colleagues, we lived in a hotel.
- Wow! How long? — asked the driver.
- For a week, — he replied.
- It’s clear. But you have a family, right? — the taxi driver clarified.
- Yes, wife and son, — answered the passenger.
— Does your wife work? — Azriel asked.
- Yes, we both work. And my son goes to school. We’re both inspectors. But we regulate business trips so as not to leave our son alone, — the man said.
- This is right. Do you love each other? — the taxi driver asked curiously.
- Certainly! We have a wonderful family! My son studies well and helps around the house, and I help my wife, — he exclaimed.
- This is good. That’s how it should be. And I’m lonely… — Azriel muttered.
- Why? You, as I understand it, are a good person. I think you earn not so little. What is the reason? — the passenger was surprised.
- The fact is that my mother is sick, and I give most of the money to her for treatment, — the driver explained, making it as believable as possible.
- Oh, I’m so sorry! — the man exclaimed.
- It’s okay, by the way, we’ve already arrived, — said the taxi driver.
- Thank you. Here, take it. There’s a little more than needed here. Health to your mother. Goodbye! — the passenger said goodbye, getting out of the car and taking out a suitcase from the trunk.
- Thank you too. Goodbye! — Azriel exclaimed, smiling kindly.
