Chapter 26

A woman in her forties becomes Azriel’s passenger and asks him to take her to a business center. The cab driver doesn’t like something about her, but he drives off without further ado.
- You should know who you are driving! — the woman says with superiority so suddenly that Asriel flinches.
- Really? Who am I carrying? — He asked with feigned surprise, though deep down he was laughing.
- I’m the executive of the leading PharmaGarant company! “Guarantee of quality and efficiency”! That’s our slogan. You’ve never heard it? — Arrogantly and slowly, probably wanting the driver to feel insignificant, she said.
- Wow! I didn’t know I was carrying such a big shot! — exclaimed the cab driver, trying to contain his laughter.
- Yes! — confirmed the passenger, — And now I’m going to a meeting devoted to the creation of a new product, which will bring the company many millions!
- Well, I envy you. I’m just a cab driver,” Asriel muttered sadly.
- That’s for sure! You don’t have the worries that I have. You just drive around the city, taking people around. You don’t have to think much. My job is different. I manage hundreds of people, I socialize with high society, I perform the most complicated tasks. Besides, I am beautiful and easily attract attention, which gives me an additional advantage at work, — the woman boasted.
- I see your life is much more interesting than mine. Not everyone can reach such heights. Your position in society is a testament to your extraordinary intelligence and ability. I don’t have that. I studied mediocre at school, I didn’t study at the institute, I went straight to work as a cab driver. I have no family, I have no friends. But you’re different. You’re much better than me,” the cab driver compared me.
- That’s for sure. Of course, not everyone can achieve that! — she said with superiority, clearly pleased with Azriel’s words.
- Do you have a family? — He asked.
- I had a husband, but we divorced. He took the child for himself. We don’t speak anymore. I don’t know what happened to them. I don’t really care,” the passenger said, wrinkling her nose.
- Why did you get divorced? — The driver asked.
- He, as a man, wanted to dominate our family. But I didn’t agree with him. I was better than him, smarter, more capable. He stood his ground, so I realized I didn’t want a relationship with him anymore. Now I live alone, and it suits me fine, believe me, — said the woman.
- I see that you are a strong person. We’re here. Goodbye, — said goodbye Azriel.
- Goodbye! — said the passenger and left the car.
Asriel wondered if he had chosen the right direction. Yes, this woman had accomplished a lot, but she had many negative qualities. Too many. Even with her first sentence, she immediately let the man choose the direction. Still, he had gotten it right.
