Chapter 19

Outside the bank, a broad-shouldered, masked man gets into Azriel's car and asks in a quiet, ingratiating voice for a ride to one of the abandoned houses in town. He was dressed all in black, with a bag filled with something hanging behind his back. Azriel took a glimpse of him and immediately picked a direction. Not even intuition was needed here. But the interrogation had to be done. Not now. Not when the man was hot and suspicious. Later. Maybe something would come out that could exonerate him.
It was a long drive - the bank was in the center of town and the abandoned houses were on the outskirts.
A gun was held to the cab driver's temple. The passenger moved closer to Azriel's ear so that he could feel the confused breathing on the back of his neck.
- 'You won't say anything about me,' he whispered.
- I don't know you. I haven't seen your face. I don't know anything about you," Azriel said just as quietly, making his voice as frightened as possible. Of course, he wasn't afraid of the man, he couldn't be killed. But he had to act like a normal man, otherwise the criminal might suspect something.
- I'll kill you if you make a sound. Do you understand me? - The passenger growled harshly.
The driver nodded, not wanting to provoke the already agitated armed man. Although it was already evening, more like night, there were a lot of cars on the streets. There was no need to make a fuss. Asriel grinned. He loved working with such "dangerous" passengers. He didn't understand the fascination himself. But he enjoyed traveling with such unrivalled, agitated people. It was like he was feeding off their negativity.
The gun had long since been put away, and the man was sprawled out in the back seat, rejoicing in his success. He was, he was sure, winning big. Naive. He would be convinced otherwise as soon as he left the car. In the meantime... He could enjoy himself. Asriel felt an incredible gloating feeling.
The road was coming to an end.
- I'm sorry... - the cab driver muttered quietly.
- I told you to be quiet! - The response was immediate.
- I remember. It's just that we're coming up... - the driver said just as quietly.
- And what do you want? I'm not paying. Be glad you're alive at all," the man exclaimed angrily.
- Okay, - Azriel sighed theatrically. - Goodbye.
The passenger got out of the car and, throwing his bag on his back, went into the entrance of the abandoned house. Asriel immediately drove in the opposite direction.
