Hi all. Basically, many of you have come across fan fiction in the genre of bromance more than once or twice on Fikbook. We, examining the roots of the word “bromance” itself, see that it is a combination of the words “brother” (bro) and “romance” (romance). This reflects the basis of this type of friendship - male brotherhood, intertwined with a deep emotional connection, somewhat similar to a romantic one. Well, it’s definitely worth starting with what bromance actually is, what its essence is, and what are the differences between bromance and preslash. It's simple: bromance is a special type of relationship between two men, combining strong friendship, mutual respect, and support. These relationships, although close, are not romantic or sexual, unlike the same preslash - a genre of literature or cinema, where the relationship between the main characters has overtones of an erotic and/or romantic nature. Pre-slash (or pre-slash) is a type of relationship that hints at the emergence of a romantic, homosexual relationship between characters. Often the characters do not have homosexual inclinations; according to the plot, the relationship can be either conflict-provoking or exclusively friendly, but the author subtly convinces the reader that this is love, and somewhere in the future the relationship will cross the friendship line and become romantic or sexual. It happens that the characters begin to guess about the situation and even become convinced of it, but it doesn’t come to the point of slash (at least within the boundaries of the work). Bromance is a term that describes an intimate, but platonic, deep friendship between two men. The point is that he is a special kind of her that has unusual dynamics, emotional tension, and often bromance is described as a strong feeling of intimacy between two men, even beyond the boundaries of ordinary friendship, but without sexual/romantic innuendo. Bromance involves intimacy and strong, emotional interaction without a sexual or romantic component, while preslash, on the other hand, focuses on such relationships between men. For example, in preslash fanfiction, many members of the musical group BTS gradually become closer to each other, spending time together (be it in business, a criminal organization, etc.) and fall in love, although they understand that they are contradicting themselves, because their lives are before there were no similar cases. Moreover, their romance does not generally extend to sex, although the prerequisites for this phenomenon have already arisen (awkwardness; short, random kisses, etc.). In conclusion, bromance and preslash are exactly two different concepts; It is important to understand precisely their differences when describing the relationships between characters in your story. Bromance can be described by creating a deep, compelling friendship between the main male characters and keeping the relationship platonic. Of course, the question arises: how then to describe bromance in your fanfic? Rather, it is important to focus specifically on the strong and emotional connections between the characters. They can support each other in difficult moments, be understanding and kind, sincere... When describing bromance in a story, you should pay special attention to the nuances and details that reflect the depth and complexity of the relationship between the characters. At the same time, it is important not to cross the line beyond which bromance becomes preslash. To achieve this, it is helpful to avoid overtly sexualized situations or romantic overtones in characters' behavior or dialogue. For example, you can focus on mutual support, trust, deep friendship between the characters (let’s say a guy gets into trouble with bandits, and he is rescued by a friend who fiercely protects him from the same bandits who attack passers-by for no reason). When describing their interactions, you can also use strong, affective expressions, such as: gestures of support, emotional conversations, showing concern for each other. In addition, this relationship can be shown to go beyond ordinary friendship, manifesting itself in some special situations, such as sacrificing their well-being or even their lives for each other. Basically, the characters must have a deep, lasting bond based on mutual respect and support. They may have the same long-term friendship; the same ability to read each other's minds, deal with problems together, support each other in difficult times. For example, let us recall the same famous, brilliant detective named Sherlock Holmes, who at that time was a complex and multifaceted personality in his own stories. He clearly could not do without the calm, balanced Watson, who from time to time helps Holmes investigate various crimes. Or, for example, we remember the first glimpses, bright features of bromance, such as the relationship between David (who later became the king of Israel) and Jonathan, the son of King Saul, described in the Bible. After the death of his friend, David, lamenting, still admitted that that friendly love was for him much “higher than the love of a woman.”In addition, bromance can manifest itself in: humorous dialogues, common interests, regular meetings, support for achievements. Often in a bromance there is even an ironic, humorous attitude towards each other, which adds lightness and fun to these relationships. Such techniques can be presented in practice through moments of joint activity, be it: sports competitions, hobbies, work support, or simply spending time together. When describing relationships in your story, it is important to remember that each friendship is unique and can include elements of both male and female friendships. Relationships may change over time, develop or face difficulties, but their nature should always be honest and maintain the very spirit of friendship. I wonder, what is the main difference between male friendship, for example, and female friendship? Although our culture has imposed certain stereotypes on both of these species, there are still no clear, absolute restrictions visible. The fact is that male friendships are often characterized by strong, emotional support, empathy and decisiveness in solving problems. At the same time, how can female friendships be more emotionally rich: with greater openness in expressing emotions; with a more subtle, mutual receptivity. The difference between male friendship and female friendship lies precisely in the specific manifestation of these relationships. Male friendship may be expressed through shared, exciting adventures, sports competitions or other active forms of leisure, and communication between friends may be less emotional and shown through more straightforward, friendly dialogue, insults or jokes. At the same time, deep emotional connections and mutual understanding are also present in male friendships, although they may not manifest themselves as clearly and openly as in female relationships. However, it is important to remember that both forms of friendship can be unique, varied and unusual. Some men can be close friends with women, and some women can be close friends with men. Ultimately, it is important to portray friendship as it is presented in the story and convey character interactions exactly as the author intended them to be. Another difference between male and female friendships lies in different emotional manifestations, support and the ability to resolve many problems. The main description of friendship in the story should be honest, and also maintain the spirit of friendship, regardless of its type, which is what we talked about a little higher. On the other hand, female friendship is often characterized by emotional openness, more frequent conversations and support on an emotional level. Women may show greater empathy and emotional exhaustion towards each other, and are more likely to discuss relationships, emotions and personal issues. And yet, the differences between male and female friendships are associated with general trends due to social stereotypes, in which in each case it is important to take into account both the individuality of the characters. In general, bromance is a significant aspect of the representation of friendship and male relationships in literature and art. It explores strong emotional connections, highlighting the importance of support and the ability of close relationships to transcend gender stereotypes and find their place in different forms and expressions of friendship, regardless of the characters' gender. Bromance, in any case, is an emotionally rich, special form of male friendship that straddles the line between regular friendship and romantic relationships. Its description requires special attention to emotional connections, mutual understanding, funny jokes and moments of joint activity. I hope this article helped you. I wish you good luck and further success in creating stories/fan fiction, in which you may include bromance as an element in your work. Good luck!
