Gabriel is scared. Every night he dreams of Asmodeus, who is injecting himself with his grace, or dead Michael, reproaching him for leaving or asking for help.
His older brother is covered in blood, looks at him with bloodshot eyes and begs him not to leave and help. Gabriel wants to, but only Michael is in a Cage, where the archangel is not allowed to go.
He tosses on the bed, and then wakes up screaming.
Of course, he usually doesn't need to sleep, but he was too tired and he had very little grace, although she was recovering every hour. With such thoughts, Gabriel went out to the kitchen to drink water in the middle of the night.
*
Dean greets him sullenly in the morning and jokes about "sleepless nights." Gabe laughs back, but the fun goes away immediately. He hasn't had enough sleep since he was pulled out of the clutches of Asmodeus.
Sam looks at him worriedly, but doesn't say anything while Gabriel, out of habit, helps himself to some porridge. Of course, he doesn't have to eat, but he wants to be in the company of hunters and his brother.
Cas immediately realizes that something is wrong with the archangel, frowns, but does not touch him while he eats.
As soon as Gabriel steps out into the hallway, Castiel immediately follows him.
"Gabriel, what's wrong with you?"
Gabe freezes and turns around.
"What are you talking about, Cassie?"
"You're not all right. What happened?"
Him brother talks a little unusual. Gabriel thinks he picked it up from the other inhabitants of the bunker.
"I didn't get enough sleep," Gabriel decides to tell the truth and yawns widely in confirmation, immediately covering his mouth with his hand, "see?"
Cas nods and Gabe taps him on the shoulder, smiling.
Gabriel reaches his room and lies down on the bed, but does not sleep, only looks at the ceiling, immersed in his thoughts.
So several hours pass. Evening is coming.
Gabriel is just thinking about asking Jack for help when suddenly there is a knock on the door.
"Can I?" the door opens a crack and Sam's head appears in the opening.
"Come in," Gabriel waves his hand.
Sam walks into the room and looks down at Gabriel.
"Did you get half an hour's sleep?" Sam asks, looking anxiously into the archangel's eyes.
Gabe slowly nods his head, then squints, thoughtfulness appears in his golden eyes.
"I don't remember how long I slept," Gabriel admits honestly, looking at Sam, then carefully sits up on the bed.
"More nightmares?" Sam's got a lot of insight. Gabriel knows that Winchester himself also has nightmares, about Lucifer's torture, about the deaths of people dear to him, about... Gabriel no longer remembers what else Sam told him. The Archangel nods slowly.
"Do you want me to get you a blanket?" Sam frowns, examining the thin blanket given to the archangel by Dean, because "they don't freeze!".
Gabriel nods, shivering from the cold.
Sam brings him a big warm blanket and wraps him up until he is sure that Gabriel is warm enough. He smiles and heads for the door, wishing Gabriel a good night.
"Don't go," the sudden plea in the archangel's voice makes Sam stop on the threshold, "stay."
Winchester turns around.
"Of course, Gabe," he says softly, smiling.
Sam hugs him and that night the nightmares go away.
