Chapter 1

Notes:
I haven't written anything in a while. About two years. So, I finally decided to write something. There may be mistakes. Enjoy reading it
After the incident in the twenty-seventh year, Interpol decided to create a special unit to combat terrorism — Task Force 29. It got this name because of the twenty-nine countries that were part of it. But it is the Prague office that interests us more. It has just opened, so there are not many people here yet. About ten, maybe a little more. Everyone was doing his or her own thing: some were gathering in groups, getting acquainted with new colleagues, some were inspecting their new workplace, some were talking on the phone, presumably with relatives or friends. Apparently, there were both locals and those who had traveled here from other countries. One could hear English, Russian, Czech, German and so on. Among the newcomers was Jim Miller. He was looking around his new place of work, trying to find at least one familiar face. He was hardly the only military man in the whole department. But it seemed everyone present so far was a civilian. Though no. There was one man who seemed familiar to Jim, but he couldn’t remember where he’d met him before. He began to dig through his memories, but too much had happened in the last few years and jumbled up in his head. A familiar voice brought him out of his musings:
“Jim, finally. I was thinking of calling you.” Miller tore his gaze away from the man, turning toward the voice. “I thought you were lost and couldn’t find the right store.”
A girl came down the stairs, waving to Jim. She was unremarkable in appearance. She was dressed in a business suit. Her dark hair fell in waves over her shoulders, framing her face beautifully. Expressive blue eyes, a wide smile. She looked to be about forty, maybe more.
“Colleen.” Miller smiled at her. “What are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be watching the immigrant family.”
“Yes, but when they talked about creating this unit and announced the lists of people who would work here, I volunteered to be the supervisor of this project, or rather, this branch so to speak.” she put her hand on his shoulder. “I was also appointed as a temporary assistant to the director until he gets used to it, but I know him, and he quickly gets used to the new environment. And you know this man too.”
“Are you sure? I don’t know half your friends.”
“You know this man for sure.”
Jim was silent for about a minute, maybe more, trying to think of all the people he knew who knew Colleen, but he couldn’t remember anyone for sure. Colleen squeezed his shoulder harder, making a mini hint.
“This is… Me?” asked Miller uncertainly.
“Yes. You’re running this branch now.”
“Are you sure I can handle it?” Jim lowered his voice.
“Yes. Before you were relieved of duty, you were the commander’s right-hand man, filling in for him when needed.” she smiled. “You’ll do fine. Especially since I’ll always be there to help if you get confused.”
“Yeah, but replacing a commander in a small squad for a few hours is one thing, but managing an entire 'complex' is another.” Jim stared at the floor.
“Don’t worry. You’ll have another assistant, but unlike me, he’ll be around all the time. You and he will definitely work well together.” Colleen looked around at everyone present.
The man Colleen was talking about was standing in a small group, talking to his coworkers. He turned his head in their direction when he noticed Colleen waving at him.
The man quickly said something to his companions and walked in their direction.
“Ah, Colleen, who’s that with you?” the stranger stopped next to the girl.
The man was a little taller than Jim and Colleen. He was dressed in an ordinary business suit with a vest.
“I told you about him.” she cleared her throat. “Let me introduce you. Duncan MacReady” she pointed to the man. “head of the counterterrorism unit and your assistant. Jim Miller” she pointed to another man. “the director of this division.”
“An Omega at the head of an entire department.” Macready grinned. “It’ll be interesting to watch.” his gaze softened. “How are your wounds?”
“Huh?” Jim looked up at his companion.
“Remember a few years ago? Our squads were working together then.”
“Oh, yeah. It’s much better now. They patched me up pretty good back then. My leg won’t listen sometimes, but all in all, I’m okay.” Miller fiddled with his ring. “And here we are, working together again. Either fate is trying to make sure we’re there for each other, or Colleen is.” he shifted his gaze from Duncan to his sister.
“Don’t look at me. The lists were made independently. I had no part in it. I only asked to be an assistant.” Colleen turned a hundred and eighty degrees and, after a few steps, waved her hand. “Come on. I’ll show you your workstations and tell you about the main employees.”
The trio went up to the second floor.
“This is the cybercrimes unit.” Colleen stopped at the first aisle. “Peter Chang is in charge here.” she pointed to the man behind the desk. “26 years old. Omega.” White turned to her brother. “Remember about two weeks ago I asked you to help me with a case?”
“Yeah.” Jim replied. “Then someone had to be bailed out of jail I think.”
“Right.” Colleen looked down the aisle again. “It was him. I’ll send you more details about the case on the computer. I told him it was you who got him out, so stick to that story for now, okay?”
“Yeah.” Miller and MacReady answered at the same time.
“Good. Talking to Chang” she pointed to another man. “Daniel Fletcher, or as some people call him, Smiley. It’s a nickname he gets because he’s the life of the party. He makes friends quickly and knows how to lighten the mood. Sometimes he can be too chatty, but he is a nice person. 33 years old. Alpha. At TF29, he’s a forensics. His office is on the first floor. From the staircase, if you’re facing it, turn right and go straight through to the end.
They went further.
“Right next door to Chung is the organized crime unit. Vincent Black runs it. 35 years old. Beta. With Chang being an omega and unmarked, we only selected betas and omegas. Trying to minimize the risk of accidents. Of course, the department has alphas, omegas, and betas. But if the two leads are combined and one of the employees is an omega, there will be no alphas in that department.” Colleen sighed heavily. “I’m sure for a while they’ll fight about someone prying into the other’s business, but hopefully they can compromise quickly, or else there’ll be trouble. Chang, as an omega, is lower in the hierarchy than Black, so the latter may try to use his beta status to somehow establish himself, but in TF29 they’re both of equal importance and they’ll both have to realize that. And you, Jim,” she turned to him, “as Director, will have to deal with these issues and show that everyone is equally important and there are no outcasts. Even if the agent is augmented.” White turned to MacReady. “That goes for you too, Duncan.”
“Good.” Macready replied.
“Let’s move on. There are only two offices left.”
Colin turned left and stopped at the next passage.
“This is the counterterrorism unite. Mostly alphas here, but there are a couple of betas. Duncan MacReady, you’re in charge here. 41 years old. Alpha.” the girl patted him on the shoulder. “You go look around the office while I take Jim to his desk. I’ve got a couple things I need to discuss with him personally.” The brother and sister walked toward the last office. “I’ll give you login credentials, passwords and access cards later.”
As White and Miller approached the office, Colleen pulled out an access card, swiped the sensor and went inside. Jim followed her in.
“Jim, I need to have a serious talk with you.” Colleen walked over to the desk and leaned on it, standing with her back to her brother. “Our mother knows you’re here, knows where you live, so be careful.” White sighed. “She doesn’t know MacReady can smell your omega scent. If he really is yours truly, it’s only going to add to our problems, so try not to get too close to him. She spent too much time setting you up with Neil. I’ll help you in this matter as much as I can, but remember that I won’t always be able to be there for you.” she straightened up and walked over to Jim. “You and I are on different continents now. I’m allowed to be here for the first few months until things get better, then I’ll have to go back to my old job.” Colleen hugged her brother tightly. “I’m taking a big risk helping you.”
“Don’t worry, Colleen,” Jim hugged her back. “MacReady will be taken care of. Send me more of his biography. I’m sure you’ve been gathering information on the agents.”
“I already have.” said the girl and stepped back. “There’s already a full biography of MacReady on your home computer. I knew you’d want to know more about him. He’s the only one who immediately realized you were an omega. Even after what mom did. I talked to him that day. Their unit was getting ready to leave. They had finished their operation there, but he wanted to stay to make sure they could get you back on your feet. I kept in touch with him and told him about your recovery progress. He seemed to like you.” Colleen smiled. “If you still want to be with him, I’m willing to help you with that.”
“Thank you.” Miller smiled as well.
Suddenly, the door to the office swings open and MacReady walks in.
“Did I interrupt you?” Duncan asked.
“No. We were just talking about you.” Colleen slipped her hand into her pocket and pulled out two access cards. “These are” she held out the cards to the men “access cards. But unlike the others, these give you access to the principal’s office, the secret passages, the archives, the NHS and so on.” the smile faded from her face. “Only a few people have these cards: you, me and Mandarley. Never leave them behind. If they fall into the wrong hands… I dread to imagine what could happen.” Miller and MacReady took the cards from the girl’s hands. “We could make a lot of enemies. I trust you.”
“We won’t let you down.” Jim tucked the card into his jacket pocket.
“You can rely on us.” Duncan did the same.
“Now, you can relax, but just a little.” White smiled again. “In a few hours, we’ll need to be in uniform for the official welcome. There will be no work today, so chat, make friends, or just explore the new place. Go about your business. As long as you’re free to go.” Colleen walked out of the office, leaving the men alone.
The time passed quickly. The agents had already gathered on the first floor of the office to greet the heads of the different departments. There were about sixty or sixty-five people now. When it was exactly eight o’clock, Colleen caught the audience’s attention and spoke:
“I welcome you to the Prague branch of Task Force 29. Our unit, like the others, is in charge of investigating and preventing terrorist attacks. Everyone knows the events that took place a few months ago. It was because of these events that it was decided to create this organization. I won’t say too much. Let me introduce you to the director of the department, James Miller. “Miller stepped out of the crowd and stood behind Colleen.” The head of the counterterrorism unite is Duncan MacReady. “MacReady did the same as Miller. “The head of organized crime unit — Vincent Black. The cybercrimes unit — Peter Chang and the forensics — Daniel Fletcher.”
They each said a few words in welcoming the agents. After the ceremonial part, everyone went their separate ways. Miller, on the other hand, remained standing not far from the stairs. He pondered Colleen’s words today.
“Is it so hard to find happiness?” Jim took a deep breath.
“Hey, can I join you?” MacReady walked over to Miller and held out a glass of lemonade.
“Sure.” Jim took the glass from Duncan’s hands.
They stood in silence for about five minutes before Miller broke it:
“It went surprisingly smoothly.”
“Yeah. I didn’t expect people to be okay with all this.”
“It’s always been difficult. People are ready for anything now.” Jim sipped some of his drink. “What happened a few months ago shocked everyone. Everyone’s afraid. Prosthetics have been around for a long time, but the kind of augmentations we’re seeing now are a whole other level. Humanity is afraid of the unknown.”
“Yeah. Ever since the new augmentations came out, people have been divided into two camps: those in favor and those against. Which one do you belong to?”
“Neither. If a person needs augmentations to save a life, then please, but if a person uses it to harm…” the man sighed. “I will do my best to stop that person. How do you feel about that?”
“I don’t know yet.” Macready lowered his gaze. “I lost three good men to the augmented in that incident.”
“We always lose something.”
“Yeah…”
They stood in silence again until Daniel and Peter approached them.
“Hi.” Daniel waved and smiled broadly. “We saw you standing alone and thought we’d keep you company.”
“If you don’t mind.” Peter added.
“No. We don’t mind. It’s more fun with company.” said Miller.
“I’m Daniel Fletcher. You can just call me Smiley.” Fletcher extended his hand to shake. “And this is Peter Chang.”
“I’m James Miller.” the man shook hands with his companion.
“I’m Duncan MacReady.” he did the same.
They chatted about all sorts of things: music, games, tastes, cracking jokes. Laughter was often heard from their quiet corner. They were among the first to leave the office.
It was already dark outside. The stars were visible. The snow crunched under their feet. There were few people on the street, which added to the atmosphere. They walked slowly, enjoying the moment of silence. No one wanted to talk. They just walked.
“I wish we could get together like this one weekend.” Fletcher said when they got to Miller’s house. “If we ever got a weekend.”
“Yeah. That was good. I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.” Jim smiled. “Yeah, and it wouldn’t hurt to just relax.”
“We could go to a park or a coffee shop, or we could meet at someone’s house.” MacReady suggested.
“For now, I think it would be better to go to the park, but let’s decide it closer to the day when we’re going to get together.” Peter spoke up.
“That sounds good.” Daniel cheered. “Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. It’s getting pretty late. We have to get up early.”
“Uh-huh. Come on. Have a good trip.” Miller said.
“Have a good rest.” said Chang.
“I’ll see you around.” Said Duncan.
They said goodbye and separated. The trio went to the subway, and Miller, taking a deep breath with a smile on his lips, went inside.
