Chapter Seven: Nostalgia for the American Nineties
December 19, 2023 at 5:14 AM
And in the land of fogs, Sonic himself was still watching an American animated series from the nineties to himself and gradually found a common language with his new friends. By that time, they had already watched the final episode of the animated series, where at the end Snively himself appears in the dark, laughs ominously, and then makes a pathetic speech:
— Yes! Goodbye Toad! Finally, Sonic defeated him! But don’t flatter yourself, hedgehog! Now it's my turn! And I'm not alone!
Then red eyes appear in the darkness accompanied by eerie music. All the toys sadly lower their heads, knowing in advance that this is the end of their series, but Sonic, not knowing about it, is happy and wants to watch more.
— Great! Great! Further! — he asked happily, but Sally pressed the red button on the remote control, turning off the TV. The hedgehog immediately became worried. — Wait, wait, what will happen next? Come on let's watch the next episode!
— This is end. — Robotnik answers.
— How? — the hedgehog didn’t understand.
— Like this. After this episode... They didn't series any further. — the red-eyed man answers with a heavy sigh and turns away.
— Wait! What about Snively being the new main villain? And my relationship with Sally Acorn? And the rebel fight against evil robots? Why did they stop making such a great series?
— In a nutshell. — Snively intervened, and answered one word at a time. — Copy... Rights!
— In what sense? — Sonic knew about Copyright, but did not understand how it related to the series.
— Over time, people began to show less interest in the series. New cartoons and TV series have appeared that are much more interesting to children and teenagers. In the end, our series was canceled without being fully completed. Over time, they tried to return it to the air, but the studio did not allow this due to copyright issues. Since the Japanese brought them back, and then a new anime series was released from 2003 and another series based on some disgusting game. And when the Americans bought the rights back, they decided not to revive the old series, but to come up with a new one about traveling to parallel worlds for some streaming service. — Snively explained and Sonic became sad. Such a good series has closed forever.
— They didn’t even let me be a villain! — Nagus was indignant. — I should have overthrown Snively and taken his place!
— What?! Which one of you is the villain?! You wouldn't be able to control Robotropolis, let alone defeat the Freedom Fighters. — said the long-nosed one.
— Could you, nephew? Robotnik asked, narrowing his eyes ominously, causing Snively to swallow nervously.
Sonic at that moment calmed down a little and tried to calm the others:
— Guys, guys, don't quarrel! Well, yes, I myself am offended that our series was not renewed... But still, this is my series! Look at all this! — smiling, he pointed with both hands at various objects made with Sonic’s face.
— You didn `t know? — asks Sally. — You are an incredibly valuable toy.
— Yes. If only my current friends could see me now! — Sonic closed his eyes briefly, imagining what he was thinking out loud. He walked around a toy yoyo with Sonic's face scratched on the side. — Hello, mister, it's me on the yoyo! — he jokingly greeted the yoyo and moved on. The next thing he saw was Robotnik's large, square face with black eyes, red rings, and huge square teeth. — Oh, hello, Yaikin! You have great teeth. — he says to that thing, as if he is communicating with Robotnik himself for real, picks up a red ball and throws it, knocking out one of the teeth. — Oh, don't worry! You're still cute!
All the toys and even Robotnik himself laughed at his joke. Bunny approaches Sonic and shows him a cup with Sonic's face drawn on the side.
— Do you know what this is?
Sonic scratched the back of his head, thinking that the bunny wanted to play a prank on him and answered, seemingly correctly:
— Cup?
Bunny grins:
— Well, you're an Indian! This is a piggy bank! — she answers, puts it on the stand and shows how it works. Nearby, a small figure of Sonic with a very long outstretched arm was holding a ten ruble coin. Bunny presses his right foot on the red lever and the Sonic figure suddenly raises his hand, throwing a coin into that very cup. — Here!
— It's all nonsense! In! Look at this. — Antoine says and shows a small post with Snively's head. — You just pull your nose and... Soap bubbles fly out. — he shows how this toy works. The dragon began popping a few loose soap bubbles with his index fingers.
— Okay! What is this for? — Sonic asks, seeing a large and red plastic sneaker. Having pressed the white button on the side, a small rubber flea immediately flew out of the sneaker, which, unfortunately, was not alive, unlike other toys. Sonic grinned, realizing what it was for.
— There are fleas in my sneaker! Even this was turned into a toy! — Sonic was sincerely surprised that such toys and souvenirs had been produced before. The hedgehog drew attention to a stack of comics, which interested him.
— Guys, do you know what is written in these comics?
— These comics began to be released after the series closed. Some ideas were implemented here, but they soon became more focused on games. Later, the comic was completely restarted, removing most of the characters from there. All because of one screenwriter! — Robotnik explained, clearly unhappy with this situation. The other toys didn't look happy about it either.
— Keep your nose up, guys! Maybe it's not so bad after all. Maybe we should read them sometime? — Sonic suggested to defuse the situation.
— This is very dangerous now, Sonic. The collector can return at any time. — Sally said seriously.
— Okay! What else do you have here? — Sonic asked and noticed a large CD player from the 1990s. It looked like a large, gray box like an old DVD with old buttons and electronic numbers in a black square in the middle. The record player, although old, was plugged into an outlet, which meant it still worked. — Wow, the oldest Sidi player! I haven't seen anything like this for almost forty years.
Noticing nearby a couple of translucent mini-cassettes with mini-films, intended for that same player. Each one had special labels and pieces of paper with the names of the songs written on them, as well as the names of the songwriters. What caught his attention most was the cassette without labels or title. He immediately became interested in what kind of song was recorded here? He takes one of them, opens the cassette input and inserts it there. When the player started up, two speakers first produced a quiet tinkling sound, which gradually became long and some kind of eight-bit theme began with some kind of game for the Nintendo console.
— Wow! How beautiful! What is the song and who is the author?
— We don’t know ourselves. But she really is beautiful. — Rotor answers.
Sally herself enjoyed the song for a bit, closing her eyes, and then walked up to Sonic, kneeling down and extending her hand.
— My prince, let me invite you to dance!
How can you refuse such a polite toy? Holding hands, the toy hedgehog and chipmunk first stood still and moved their hands left and right, and when the topic changed slightly, they turned their backs to each other, grabbed the backs of their heads with their hands and began shaking their bellies. The topic changed again and the two toys began to hop around on one leg, waving their arms and jumping around each other.
— You see how fun it is when you have a partner nearby who knows a lot about music and dancing. — says Sally.
— I know. — Sonic answers.
Snively turns off the record player and says:
— Well. Since we are all together now, we get along well with each other and now we have the most important one with us, we will go to the museum.
— To the museum? — Sonic asked again and did not notice how he accidentally fell on Sally. Then he got to his feet and helped his dance partner get up. — Which museum?
— The same one museum. — Robotnik answers. — We will be sold to the famous toy museum of Emperor of Saggan.
— Karl Saggan? — Sonic asked for clarification.
— Of course. This is the one who rules in another city from here in an empire named after himself. — Sally explained. — And both of our cities are located here in the land of fogs.
— WHAT??? — Sonic almost screamed, and then moved away from all the toys. — No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I will not go to the Empire of Saggan.
All the joyful toys immediately changed their faces to sad and surprised ones.
— So, how is that? — Acorn didn’t understand.
— I must return home to my master, David. — Sonic explained and raised his foot with both hands, where David's name was written on the gray sole of his sneakers. — That's his name, see?
All the toys widened their eyes and gasped. Even the brown mini-Tails gasped despite the fact that he was mute.
— So it has its own owner! — Sally said to herself and almost cried, catching her breath. — No... Never!... I won’t go back there!... I won’t go back to the box!...
— Sally! — Robotnik tried to calm the chipmunk, and she grabbed his box by the translucent plastic and shook it, continuing to hysteria:
— I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO THE DARKNESS!!! I CAN NOT STAND!!!
Sonic didn’t understand what was going on and what she was screaming about, so he asked out loud:
— Sally!... What's wrong with her? What's the matter?
— We sat in boxes for a long time waiting for you, Sonic. — Nicole explained.
— But why?
— Emperor Saggan will buy the entire collection of us only when you, Sonic, are in it. And if not, then we will remain locked in boxes for the rest of our lives. — Rob explained.
Sally stopped crying while Nicole calmed her down, but the hysteria continued:
— This is not fair! You must stay with us!
— Look, I'm really sorry for all of you, but I can't stay.
— WHY??? — everyone shouted at once questioningly and not understanding Sonic. Sally did the same, but also hysterical.
— This is a very long and wild story. I was just at a home sale. — the hedgehog tried to explain.
— Home sale?... — Rosie was surprised. — How did you end up there, interestingly, if you have an owner who would not allow this?
— My owner has left for a children’s camp for now, leaving me at home temporarily, and I was trying to save one toy. — Sonic explained.
— Because you're broken? Hm? — Snively chuckled questioningly, noticing that the hedgehog’s right shoulder was slightly torn at the seam and raising his right eyebrow. — Did David break you?
— Yes.. That is, no. That is, yes, that is... GR-R-R... — Sonic was ready to grab himself by the head and tear himself into pieces, because he himself was already confused and did not know how to explain to them. — This is all very difficult to explain. Yes, he broke me. But not on purpose. I swear. It was an accident. He didn't want this himself.
— Does he seem to love you very much? Yes? — Sally said incredulously, patting Tails on the head.
— I’m telling you, you misunderstood me. — Sonic said gloomily, holding his slightly torn shoulder with his other hand, and then shouted: — I AM NOT GOING TO THE MUSEUM!!!
— AND I WILL NOT GO BACK TO THE BOX!!! - Sally shouted back.
The argument was interrupted by the sound of the door closing and subsequent footsteps from the corridor. All the toys froze in horror.
— Sinitsyn is coming! — Antoine said, following the steps. Sonic quickly began to look for where his case was in order to get to it in time. The rest of the toys were going to go back into the box.
— Sally, listen! I give you my word that you will come out again! — Robotnik promised, seeing how Sally was afraid to get into the box. — Jump before the man sees us!
Overcoming his fear, the squirrel jumped after the others, and Sonic ran to his place, barely managing to close the door. Meanwhile, Mikhail Sinitsyn entered the room, humming something under his breath. He noticed that the boxes were open.
— Just a minute! I remember for sure that I didn’t open these boxes! — he said and tried to understand how they opened. However, he quickly chose not to think about it, chalking it all up to the fact that he simply forgot. — Okay it does not matter! It's time to get down to business!
Putting his camera on the table, the collector began to take out Sally, Rotor, Antoine and the rest of the characters from the animated series "Sonic the hedgehog", while continuing to sing his song:
— Money-money-money-money! Hee hee hee hee hee. And now the most important thing! — he said to himself, approaching the case with Sonic himself. Opening the case and taking it, he places it next to the rest of the toys. But here's the problem. As soon as he placed Sonic. he didn't have a right hand. Mikhail grabbed his head in horror: — NO!!! HAND!!! WHERE IS HIS HAND??? — he began to look around in panic. Then he calmed down, noticing that his severed hand was lying on the floor next to him. Otherwise he was already afraid that she had rolled off somewhere where she couldn’t be found. Apparently, as he himself suggested, he placed it on a pedestal in such a way that some thread caught on his severed hand, and while he was pulling it out, the thread simply pulled and the hand completely fell off. Taking the hand itself and presenting it to the torn seam on the hedgehog's shoulder, he compared them. — Yes. Fits. Just what should I do now? — he thought out loud and then a small idea came to him. He temporarily hid his hand in his left shirt pocket, and from his right he took out a mobile phone, dialed someone’s number and began to wait for an answer. — Hello!... It's me, Sinitsyn... Yes, I understand, we are all busy. Just remember, you promised to help me repair important things if you suddenly need me. for the fact that I once helped you?... When will you be?... Ah! After tomorrow early in the morning?...Okay, I'll wait! — the collector finishes and hangs up. Then he leaves the room. - And how did I manage to screw this up?
As soon as he came out, Sonic was the first to come to life, immediately directing his gaze to the shoulder area and screaming almost so loudly that perhaps Mikhail himself would have heard him from here in the neighboring rooms.
— HE HAS GONE!!! SHE IS NOT!!! I DON'T BELIEVE!!! I AM LEFT WITHOUT AN ARM!!!
— Hush hush! Let me take a look! — Snively tried to calm the hedgehog and examined the shoulder where his hand had fallen. — It just came off at the seam. It's easy to fix. Consider yourself lucky.
— Are you lucky? Are you crazy, long nose? — the hedgehog asked him indignantly, grabbing his neck with his only hand and then yelled at him again. — I WAS LEFT WITHOUT A ARM!!!
— Just think! — came the rather calm voice of Sally, who, using a toy pistol, shot a suction cup into the forehead of a huge cardboard image of Sonic. — Let him go. This one, David, wants to play at being a one-armed hedgehog.
— Sally, think about what you're talking about. Even if he runs away from here. At least with one hand, at least with two. Anyway, he won’t last long on the street like this. — Nicole stated.
— Nicole is right. — the dragon supported her. — The land of fogs is full of dangers, if not for people, then for toys. After all, outside there, in addition to the fog, there are a bunch of scary monsters that hide in the fog and can tear any toy. Flying pterodactyls, huge spiders, six-legged giants and even giant mantises with claws like crabs. They will eat him with cotton wool if they see one of the people... Well, I think so. I don't know exactly how they feel about living toys.
Listening to all this, Sonic lowered his head and thought:
— “How can I get out of here?”
Notes:
I had to suffer with this chapter for only a little less time this time than with the previous one.
