Chapter 1

Notes:
The fact that Dazai and Rampo are together is a complete coincidence, which, strangely enough, they are both happy about because they truly love each other. Willing to do anything, even die. To follow each other into the abyss of hopelessness, longing and sadness, and then try their best to help each other out of it. There was a healthy relationship between them, which some acquaintances envied when they found out they were in a relationship. But no one could immediately guess it on their own - too healthy. But it was only like that in public. At home, when no one was watching them, Osamu had fits of tenderness, and would come to Edogawa out of the blue and hold him in his arms for long periods of time. And when Rampo was sleeping peacefully on his shoulder, Dazai would carry him to his bed and lie down beside him, tired and exhausted. Cute at first sight, wasn't it? These two thought so too, and gradually these bursts of tenderness became a sort of tradition for Osamu before bed, which he and Edogawa quickly became accustomed to. It was a conscious relationship that lasted for three months, until Rampo began to notice something strange about Dazai - he began to change somehow. Very much so. But the older man didn't pay much attention to it and went on with his life, quickly forgetting about it. In the fourth month of his relationship with Osamu, Edogawa noticed a very, very strange change in Dazai's behavior. It was as if he was not his own, but someone else's..... All their rituals, which they performed every day or every week, Osamu gradually forgot and only brushed off the fact that he had a bad memory. But he hadn't complained about his bad memory before. Suddenly, this "bad memory" of his began to cross all existing boundaries - bad and good - in himself. Dazai had forgotten Rampo's birthday.... just forgot. So he brushed it off without saying anything more. That's just the way it was: - Osamu? Osamu! You remember what day it is, don't you? - Edogawa asked with a sad face, but with a hidden note of joy, shaking Dazai's hand on his sleeve. He only mumbled something inaudible, but turned back to his lover. The changes in Osamu bothered Rampo more and more. The constant bags under his eyes, getting bigger and bigger every day. Brown eyes, clouded with indifference, stared absent-mindedly at Edogawa, but he seemed to be looking through them. - No. But I know it's Friday. Did you want something? Rampo felt sick. Dazai always remembered all holidays and wanted to brighten them with his presence. Even if it failed, he was still glad Osamu was here. He's there for him. Edogawa would want that right now too, with all his soul, considering that on every birthday he had, Dazai was the first one to congratulate him and give him gifts. Always. And today, he didn't even come over to say hello or good morning. - Osamu, it's my birthday today... or is it? - Rampo looked reproachfully at the object of his adoration, and tears came to his eyes. Dazai did not even move, and his gaze on Edogawa was even more indifferent than before. - What's wrong with you?! - Nothing. I forgot, - Osamu replied coldly, returning to his work and habitually looking out the window at the street. The cold tone of Dadzai's reply, the indifferent expression in his eyes, and the fact that his lover hadn't even apologized, made Rampo sick. He could have at least wished the no longer beloved Rampo a happy birthday..... After that, Edogawa packed his things and went to his apartment, hoping that Osamu would return and then he would just prepare a surprise.... But there was no appearance from Dazai, or even a phone call that day. Not two days later, not two days later, not a week later, not two days later. He never called again at all. They only met at work, and then very rarely. Osamu had always tried to kill himself, but now he did it more often and more willingly than before. Edogawa didn't want to see anyone, and neither did Dazai, so he took a vacation and then lied about some airborne disease so he could stay home and not see Dazai. After their short-lived relationship, there was no desire left at all. Nevertheless, Rampo couldn't stay at home for long. He had to go to work too..... So he went. Only it wasn't a good day -..... Dazai was there, having had to put up with him since morning. He was more cheerful than before. Although... it wasn't exactly fun... honestly, it kind of sucked. Sometimes it seemed like that jerk Osamu was using something like that, because his behavior during the work day was odd to say the least. Edogawa began to wonder why Dazai was acting like this. Why was he actually acting like their relationship had come to an end? - And this, judging from his behavior, was his initiative! - So many questions and no answers. So Rampo made a decision. He decided to talk to him, to Osamu. - I want to talk to you, you don't mind, do you? - Edogawa touched Dazai's shoulder, and he instantly turned to him. Osamu's face shone with the cute smile he bestowed on everyone, as usual. It was infuriating. - What do you want to talk about, Rampo-san? - Dazai asked innocently, smiling and tucking his curly hair behind his ears. That smile, and Osamu himself after the end of his relationship with him, was annoying. Even the fact that he just existed, even though it was incredibly stupid. - About your behavior, Dazai. He turned slightly pale. It was noticeable, no matter how hard he tried to hide it. Rampo looked directly into the jerk's eyes. The pupils were normal sized, but there was one "but".... Edogawa, having good eyesight, could see that Osamu had lenses on his eyes. Hiding his pupils? Pretty clever, but against the Great Detective of all Yokohama, it was foolish. He can't be fooled. If Dazai wears lenses, it means he's hiding his eyes. His strange behavior definitely couldn't be put down to drunkenness, that would be different. Changes in Osamu. Bags under his eyes. Lenses over his eyes. Strange behavior, as if he's intoxicated. It all boils down to one thing - he's on drugs. No big deal, all that's left is to tell Dazai, who remains silent and looks Edogawa over from head to toe. - Osamu, you're on drugs. Can't you at least not embarrass yourself at work? Dadzai was visibly angry. He drew his eyebrows together, his gaze darting back and forth over Rampo's figure, only more sharply and nervously. - What's it to you? You're not my mother or my boyfriend. Although you were. You're gone. Get the hell out. You're annoying me. Edogawa just smirked. - You know, it's mutual... but I left because of you. You played and left, didn't you? But you see, I'm not going to get rid of you that easily. I'll get my revenge, if only because I trusted you and spent my, maybe always unnecessary, but time on you that I could have spent on something or someone else. - You left on your own, don't pounce and get smart. - I told you, curly post, that I left because of you! You evidently wanted it yourself! - Rampo exclaimed and fell silent. Dazai was also silent, not knowing what to say. Edogawa sighed languidly. - Osamu, you are unbearable, incorrigible, and incredibly stupid. I was happy about our relationship, but... you've ruined it. And tomorrow, I won't accept your explanation that you were out of line. I don't know if you'll remember what I said tomorrow, but still: go to hell, Dazai. Rampo wanted to slap Osamu, but he thought about it and decided against it. He turned and walked off into the sunset toward his house, leaving Dazai alone with his thoughts and actions. - Expect revenge from me, Edogawa. Osamu nodded after the figure, and turned around to go home and forget himself in another dose, after which, tomorrow morning, he would forget about this phrase, about their conversation, and again take another dose, and the next day would be in a fog, just like this one. - Well, Osamu, you won't get rid of me so easily... I'll get my revenge. Rampo mumbled, and disappeared behind the many houses, thinking over the plan for his revenge, which would probably never come, for tomorrow Edogawa would think it unnecessary and forget about revenge.
