you and me, coffee and bouquet

Life kinda sucks. That's the thought that crossed Heeseung's mind while he was sitting on a wooden bench in the city park with a bouquet of colorful freesias, legs crossed. He'd been waiting for his date for about 40 minutes and, honestly, it was getting late and cold. you hey, are you coming?             Life really sucks. That's what he thought when he looked at the message app on his phone, a bubble appearing in his chat with Yunjin, a girl from his university. huh yunjin ah yeah... sorry about that i just figured i forgot to do something very urgent i can't meet today.. Heeseung's face drooped, but he, a hopeless and naive romantic that he is, still had some hope in him. you oh dw, it's fine what about next time? huh yunjin no... sorry i'm sure you'll be able to find someone else with your pretty face tho i believe in you ;) He left the message on read and looked at himself in the darkness of the phone screen. Heeseung released a heavy sigh, gazing down at the bouquet in his arms — it was the first time he bought an actual one for a date, but it seems like things really don't work the first time. And what's he supposed to do with it now? Throwing it away would be too much of a waste, and he doesn't want to give it to some random woman on the street. Maybe he could give it to his mom though, to make her happy after weeks of not seeing each other because of his university. But would it last until that?.. Heeseung was very doubtful. He looked around only to see that the park was almost empty, and also a lot quieter than an hour before when he came here. The night lamp poles lit up as the day flowed into the late evening, and the couple passing by under them looked so pretty and happy that it felt unfair — or Heeseung simply felt like shit. Not caring much about what time it was, he decided to warm up before going back to his apartment. He grabbed the flowers, his knuckles red and fingers numb from the cold, and headed towards the nearest coffeeshop. He didn't even spare a glance for the sign that showed the name of it nor did he look at its working hours. He just really needed his coffee. When he entered, he was welcomed by warm lights and a familiar aroma of coffee drinks that always pleasantly tickles his nostrils. "I'm sorry, sir, but we are closing." Well, maybe he wasn't exactly welcome. He glanced at the counter and saw a man — or a boy? — in a cream-brown apron and with a duster in one of his hands, who he seemingly had interrupted. Heeseung stood there awkwardly, still with the flowers — someone would probably laugh at him, and Heeseung would agree that he looked like an idiot. Though he already made a fool of himself, so he might as well be a fool until the end. "But... that means you're not closed yet, right?" Heeseung inquired, the blue paper clumsily rustling in his hold. The guy looked at the wall on his right side — he checked what time it was, Heeseung soon realised, — and bleakly sighed. He finished wiping the counter in a few seconds, putting away the cloth, and looked up at Heeseung, who was still standing in the same place. "So? Are you gonna make an order?" the guy asked. He didn't actually sound rude, most likely just tired from his shift. Heeseung felt kind of bad. "Uhm," he cleared his throat, "Yeah, one double latte, please."  Heeseung stepped closer to the counter and sat down on one of the stools, putting the bouquet on the one next to his seat. When he started to look around the cafe, the barista gave him a short glance before beginning to prepare the drink. The coffeeshop looked nice on the inside, but it wasn't anything really special. It looked like any other cafe in the city — the walls painted in creme colors, menu written on chalk boards, comfy furniture and cozy atmosphere, pretty much everything that a place like that needed. But despite how pretty it looked, Heeseung's attention kept drifting away to the guy — "Jaeyun", read the name badge on his chest — that worked on his cup of coffee. Uh- a cup? "I thought you will prepare me a coffee to go?" Heeseung said with an unsure tone. The barista stopped in the middle of pouring the milk and blinked slowly. He let out yet another sigh. "Sorry, I'll-" "No-no, it's fine!" he waved his hands in the air, "I- uh- I'm not in a rush." Jaeyun's smile looked tired, exhausted at that, but he returned to his work and finished the order, placing it in front of Heeseung. The latter nodded slightly and took a sip of the coffee — it was very hot actually, but the burn on his tongue felt nice, for some reason. "I'm really sorry for that one," Jaeyun started, and before Heeseung wanted to interrupt him again, he continued, "But I'm more sad because I wanted to just give it to you and leave." Now, his smile was apologetic. He chuckled at his words, "And I'm sorry for taking up your time." Jaeyun leaned on the counter and his face was close enough for Heeseung to observe his features — he was fairly handsome, with pretty and plump lips, high nose bridge, deep brown eyes and dark chocolate hair. His appearance was definitely appealing, Heeseung thought to himself while sipping his coffee. He then saw the way that Jaeyun's gaze curiously shifted to the bouquet, but he didn't expect him to ask anything about it. "What's with the flowers?" he enquired and turned his head to look at his customer. Heeseung was a bit flustered, — he didn't want to appear like a loser (that he was, in a way) — but he answered the question anyways. "I, uh- was supposed to give them to my date, but she just kinda... dumped me? Yeah, something like that." Jaeyun seemed genuinely surprised — Heeseung wished he could read people's minds. "Oh. Okay. I'm sorry that happened to you." He blinked and continued, "I just... can't really imagine a person dumping someone... like you." Now it was Heeseung's turn to be puzzled. What exactly did he mean by that? Someone like him? What's so special about him? "I mean," Jaeyun hurried to explain himself, "It was your- it was supposed to be you guys' first date, yeah?" "Yeah", Heeseung nodded. "Yeah, it's just," he hesitated for a split second before saying, "you're very handsome. Plus, it's kinda dumb to dump someone without even trying to know them." Jaeyun shrugged his shoulders as if it was not a big deal, but his words still left Heeseung awestruck. The last thing he expected to hear after the failed date was a compliment from a pretty barista in a random coffeeshop. "At least I wouldn't do that." Jaeyun averted his gaze and the pout on his lips was adorable if Heeseung is going to be honest. Those words made him get out of his initial shock, and he smiled in return. It was... amusing, he would say, because it's just that strange feeling when a bad day turns out to be not so bad actually. "You have an... interesting way of complimenting strangers," Heeseung laughed a little and he swears he could hear his heart thump at 2x speed when he received a giggle from Jaeyun. Heeseung's selfnote: come back to this place to see this cute barista again. The silence that fell between them wasn't awkward, it was something calming and soothing. Heeseung looked down because he didn't know what to say or what to do next, and when he saw his unfinished cup of coffee, he suddenly remembered what he came here for in the first place. He took the cup by the handle and took a sip — the latte was lukewarm already, but the scent and the flavour was still good. When he finally drank it all and heard a yawn from Jaeyun, he knew that he couldn't order another one despite how much he wanted to stay in the strange feeling of laziness that this place — or the pretty boy at the counter — wrapped him in. So Heeseung quickly stood up, and the action seemed to grab Jaeyun's attention. "What, are you leaving?" His gaze was a bit sleepy, definitely, and Heeseung already felt kind of bad for prolonging his shift. "Yeah, I don't want to prevent you from going home anymore," he smiled to lighten up the mood, "How much will that be?" "Uhm," Jaeyun ran his hand through his hair, "four thousand won." "Sure," Heeseung digged into his pocket for his credit card, but when he was about to give it to Jaeyun, he was stopped by the latter's speech. "Wait, may I do another one for you? I'll do you a coffee to go." Heeseung blinked confusedly, "I mean, aren't you tired? But, like, if you want to, then go ahead." And that's how he ended up waiting for his coffee and observing the way that Jaeyun worked on it once again. Occasional thoughts about the boy crossed his mind — something along the lines of his hands being nice and him working very professionally. He wondered how long he had been working in here. Soon, Jaeyun took out a black marker from his apron's pocket and asked Heeseung, "What's your name?" Right... they didn't actually exchange names. "Heeseung," he nodded. "Lee Heeseung." Jaeyun hummed shortly and wrote down the syllables, though it definitely took him some time, then grinned and held out the coffee. Heeseung smiled in response and passed him the card. He remembered the bouquet that was still lying on the stool while Jaeyun was doing the operations. After looking at it, he got an unexpected idea, which he was going to turn down quickly, but... He thought about it for solid three seconds and decided that the idea was not too terrible. "Here," Jaeyun handled him his credit card back. "Thank you for coming here," and even though it's what you would commonly say to a customer, it sounded a bit different than what Heeseung would usually hear. It sounded natural, genuine and warm. "Thank you for making me coffee even after your shift ended, really. And..." Heeseung looked down at the flowers once again, before he took them in his hands and gave them to Jaeyun. "Huh?" The latter seemed to be shocked and confused at the same time, with his eyebrows flying up to his forehead. Heeseung could only smile fondly, albeit a bit shyly. "I think I've... finally found who to give these flowers to." Jaeyun glanced at the bouquet uncertainly, but he still took it. Heeseung thought that he looked very cute like that, holding the freesias close to the chest with a tint of rosiness covering his ears and cheeks. He left without another word, just to shake his hand as a goodbye through the window door outside. He bit his lower lip excitedly when Jaeyun returned the gesture as if he was a teenage girl falling in love for the first time. On the way home, he took a sip of his coffee, and he especially enjoyed the warm feeling that spread across his chest at the moment. However, when he decided to take a look at the cup, he noticed that there is not only his name (which was written wrongly, apparently), but also a phone number with an english "Jake" under it. Heeseung could only smile triumphantly.           you hey thanks for the number i will make sure to use it well :) jaeyun oh you really texted me i thought you didn't notice since you didn't mention it TT you yeah i didn't notice it right away, sorry jaeyun nothing to be sorry for, i'm glad you texted me) and thank you for the flowers, again i like freesias and their meaning, too you haha i'm glad you liked them wait, what meaning? jaeyun you didn't know?? and still bought them for a girl??? you um i'm just not really interested in those kind of things jaeyun their meaning is a new beginning at least that's what my friend told me you your friend must've liked "good witch" jaeyun what? you it's a drama jaeyun oh.. i didn't know lol you it's fine, i think it suits our situation ;) jaeyun new beginning? you yeah btw, my name is 희승, not 희성 jaeyun omg i fucked up ㅠㅠ IM SORRY i'm a transfer student, i'm from australia my english name is Jake you that... explains a few things

Change the contact name from "jaeyun" to "jake"?

No                   Yes

And Heeseung couldn't help but text this cute boy all night and come to the same coffeeshop for the entirety of the next week. The so-called new beginning felt even nicer than double latte.
