Jennie didn't think it would turn out this way. She was twenty-three. Behind her were four long years of undergrad, thesis defense, and finally, graduation, throwing the hat in the sky with diploma in hand and student loan installment payments in her pocket, and right in front of her was a warm Miami beach, understandably not alluring at all to Kim for its beauty.
Park Chaeyoung had brutally tricked her.
Kim was tricked, and Jennie realized it too late: first, when her friend throughout the day threw in her direction numerous, sparkling mischievous glances, diligently packing to leave the dormitory, and after, when Chaeyoung appeared in front of her with tickets and shoved her into a car, saying something about how they would definitely have to pay for the excess.
Young Park's perfectly planned plan was a defeat for Jennie. The giddy friend was still drawn to adventure and fun, and Kim had enough on her plate: a student loan, an unpaid payment on her modest apartment, and an unsent resume for her job. For the past year, Kim had been struggling to make ends meet, and before she knew it, she had become bogged down in it all.
In the end, Chaeyoung played her and, not wanting to hear a single word of protest, tricked her into going to the airport and then onto a plane headed straight for "sunny Florida, toward drinks, beaches, long-awaited vacations and the old days," is what Park said in an attempt to share her enthusiasm.
And Jennie didn't want to accept that her friend was not just right, but had hit the bull's-eye, saying that Kim had become impossibly stingy and her former fire of hooliganism was about to go out, and this vacation they truly deserved. And Kim told herself that this was the reason why Park's enthusiasm had failed, and even after they arrived, Jennie thought the whole thing was something they would both regret as soon as their bank cards went empty.
What wasn't surprising was that Park Chaeyoung wasn't worried about how much money she would spend on alcoholic cocktails, parties, and long hours spent at the spa with skilled massage therapists. And all because, unlike Kim, fate has given Park a chance to grow up to be a third-generation chaebol's daughter.
Hiding the truth, Kim was willing to go along with all of Chaeyoung's ventures; to go along with anything she would offer, but forcefully dragged her inner badass away before she could take over, knowing in advance that every time her friend would pull out her black card, Jennie would blush and mentally count all the money Park had spent on her, thinking about how hard it would take to get that amount back to her. Even though Jennie was already sure, she wasn't willing to accept that the next day the envelope she gave away would be found under her pillow or stashed in her underwear closet. All because "I won't charge you a single cent."
"Jen, will you stop being angry?" Chaeyoung walked with her back to her front, peering into Kim's face, whose eyes were covered by sunglasses.
"I'm not mad," the girl pursed her lips and clutched harder at the beach bag hanging off her shoulder.
"Yes, you are. Ever since last night, I've seen this expression on your face. I don't buy it, you know."
"I'm puzzled, not angry," Kim said nonchalantly. "You set this whole thing up, and I can't even imagine how much it cost you for the flight and this luxurious room you rented for me. So, yes, I'm rather puzzled."
"And you're at it again," the blonde sighed dejectedly. "Jen, you've deserved this vacation, and I'm just expressing my gratitude," and before Jennie could object, the girl continued, "If you had not helped me, I would never have received my diploma and most likely would have said goodbye to this card.
The girl waved the credit card in her hand in a playful gesture, and Jennie fluttered. In Kim's opinion, the worst moment of her life was when she'd agreed to help Park with her thesis, just to save her best friend's ass from getting expelled.
"This is too much..."
"Stop nagging," Chaeyoung whimpered. "We're already here, and you can't stop me. And I, in turn, won't be able to stop my temptation and give you the best vacation of your life by doing everything I can to bring back that ripped-off Kim Jennie I met freshman year. So, Jen, darling, just relax and enjoy."
Kim couldn't utter another word of protest as her best friend took her hand and dragged her along, forcing Kim to speed up her stride and almost run in an attempt to catch up to the energetic Chaeyoung 's pace.
Jennie knew where they were going and exactly where Park was pulling her so insistently. Blindly agreeing to any adventures of the insanely unpredictable Chaeyoung was the last thing Kim could ever think of, so she did not leave the walls of the hotel until the girl, desperate, finally confessed.
The beach was crowded. More crowded than Jennie could have imagined.
When her bare feet touched the warm sand, Kim was sure that she was somewhere at least in paradise, and only the murmur of the ocean waves reached her ears, Jennie was ready to swear that only at that moment she came to consciousness, finally burned to ashes that gray ordinariness that had haunted her for a long year, and allowed for a second (just a second!) to slip the thought that here she could have some fun.
And then, just as her self-control was beginning to crack inside, Park pulled the girl along again, enthusiastically mumbling something along the lines of "so many half-naked bodies all in one place," without even giving Jennie a chance to say anything back to her, or let alone catch her breath.
Chaeyoung stopped only when they were both under a sprawling umbrella, creating much-needed shade, and two recliners on either side, standing within a few feet of the ocean breeze.
And when, in an instant, her friend was without a sundress and appeared in just a swimsuit, Kim suddenly felt too dressed and too constrained by the fabric. The desire to take off the lightweight dress with elastic straps only increased and Jennie could not resist it, and as a result, she immediately found herself in a one-bikini, revealing an impermissible amount of pristine tanned skin.
It was worth mentioning that her best friend not only had good taste but also knew Jennie's preferences too well to choose a provocative red swimsuit and replace it not a bit more modestly - a black monokini with mesh inserts at the waist and a deep V-neckline on the chest.
In spite of everything, Jennie did not like to be modest, and the style of a prude did not suit her at all. It was necessary to assume that Chaeyoung had thought of everything in order to return Kim to her former image, which her friend missed so much.
"I'd forgotten what you looked like when you are out of cramming and worrying about part-time jobs," Chaeyoung tossed her bag under her feet and landed elegantly on the recliner, straightening and crossing her slender legs.
Jennie didn't know what to say, so she just took the sunglasses off the bridge of her nose and lay down on the second recliner, feeling how hot it was at first, but then getting used to it. Kim exhaled and put her hands under her neck, feeling the warm sunlight caressing her feet. The girl covered her eyelids for a second, listening to the bustle, which she had become accustomed to, distinguishing the noise of the ocean breeze in the many sounds, and then her ear burned by someone's hot breath, and she heard a whisper of a familiar voice.
"You didn't think we were just going to sunbathe here, did you?"
Jennie flinched and opened her eyes abruptly, meeting her gaze first with Chaeyoung's sly smile and then with the cocktails, who knows where they came from in her hands. Kim was sure that she closed her eyes for only a moment, and so the question of how her friend had managed to get the drinks so soon still echoed somewhere in her head. In any case, she didn't want to find out.
"Take it," Park held out an elongated and slightly curved glass filled with orange-colored liquid, and Jennie's fingers, as if before she could think, grasped the thin stem.
Her lips touched the straw, and when Kim, as if tormented by an unquenchable thirst, sipped the liquid through the straw and took a big sip, the smile on her best friend's lips made instant sense. The taste of the faint alcohol was palpable on her tongue, and if it hadn't been for a hasty big sip, Jennie probably wouldn't have known right away, writing it off to the bitterness of the orange.
"It's an alcoholic cocktail," Jennie was sure of her own words, so she didn't ask, she stated. Chaeyoung's mischievous smile gave Park away, giving Kim a reason to think that her best friend was indeed more than just determined to get drunk in the middle of the day.
"What else could it be?" The girl arched an eyebrow and took a sip of her cocktail, removing the decorative umbrella, so that it would not inadvertently drown in her drink. "Sober vacation is too boring," she added lightheartedly and took another sip of her drink, then set the glass aside and made herself comfortable on the recliner. "Especially since I have big plans on you."
Jennie just grinned at Park's words, mentally noting that if anything could change Chaeyoung, certainly not in this life, and until then she would remain an attractively windy person, finding real happiness in drinking and partying, and constantly dragging Kim along with her.
Leaning back on the recliner, Jennie sipped her cocktail through a straw and stared out at the ocean.
A group of surfers stood on the shoreline. The girl glanced at each of them and lingered for only a second. Even from that distance, Jennie could see the long skinny legs and rounded ass so inappropriately hidden in the one-piece swimsuit. For Kim, the conclusion was self-evident: there was a long-legged girl with a superb figure among them who, judging by her active gesticulation, was not ready to agree to anything.
Nevertheless, no matter how admirable was the body of the stranger, Jennie was bored to look at her back. The girl did not turn around, no matter how much Kim begged all known gods, so she could not see her face to find afterward.
Sipping her already heated cocktail through a straw, Kim continued to enjoy the pleasant views of Miami, carefully ignoring the surfers, in order not to stare again and hope in vain that she could get at least a little more glimpse of the stranger who, for some inexplicable reason, had so caught her eye.
Jennie was sure she was thinking, unaware of anything around her, the moment her best friend's voice burst into her consciousness with a worried "watch out!" and a volleyball flew nearby, eventually finding its target in a palm tree growing only a few feet away. Kim shuddered and cried out in surprise, the glass in her hands overturned, and the liquid was on her skin in an instant, trickling down her chest, and then down her flat stomach, eventually falling in droplets on the sand.
And just as she was about to reach for a towel, blaming her own carelessness and the volleyball game for ruining her new swimsuit, a shadow appeared in front of her, in which she later looked up and recognized the guy.
