At the same time
At home, things were even worse for David than for Oscar. All the toys were lying on the floor, outside the chest, and David was already sitting on the bed and was sad, still wondering where Sonic, Shadow and Silver had gone. He had already lost hope and, in despair, he thought that he had lost them forever and that they would probably never be found again. Amy Rose, unlike the others, was lying behind a flower pot and so far was the only one who had come to life and was watching her owner with despair, because he was not looking anywhere except one point of view of his room. — “Oh, Sonic! Shadow! Silver! If only you knew how much David misses you." - thoughts were spinning in her head. At that moment, the door to the room opened and Amy again lay down in the very corner where she had been lying. Ivan and Lili entered the room. The latter brought with her an old disc box with a game inside. Based on the cover, it was the game Sonic: Heroes. — We looked all over the house, David, but we couldn’t find them anywhere. All we found was this old disc of a game your father used to like to play. Although maybe it has already become old and no longer works. — said the mother. — Believe us, we searched everything, but we couldn’t find them anywhere. — says the father. — What if we they are never found? — David asked desperately and sighed heavily. — It’s probably all my fault. — You? Why do you say that? — the father did not understand. — Dad, do you remember on my birthday you told us about the story that your grandmother told you, that toys come to life at night and walk around the room while we don’t see them? — David asked and dad nodded in response, and the son continued to explain what he assumed in his head: — Plus, then my friends and I saw them all alive in my room. And I seem to be more convinced of this. It's probably my fault that Sonic, Shadow and Silver disappeared. After all, Sonic and Shadow were my favorite toys and I often played with them. And when you gave me Silver for my birthday and I began to play with him more often, they were probably offended by me that I no longer played with them and no longer considered them my favorite toys, and then they left home. And Silver, apparently realizing that he was also partly to blame, went after them to try to get them back. But they don’t even want to listen to him on this topic and now they will probably never return home. Having finished explaining what he had come up with in his head, because he actually did not know the true details on this topic, he almost cried. The parents hugged their son and tried to calm him down. — What are you, David? I'm sure they probably forgave you a long time ago. — says the father. — They will definitely return home. They just probably need time to resolve their conflicts about you and understand that the open world is more dangerous for toys than their home with their beloved owner. — mom added. — Is it true? You think so? — David stopped crying. — We don't think so. We just know it. — mom answers. At this time, the father looked at David’s toys, which were lying on the floor, and picked up Amy Rose from the floor, placing her in front of his son, moving her hands and imitating her voice, saying: — Hello, David. My name is Amy Rose and I'm sad just like you. I'm bored and very lonely, because no one has played with me for probably a whole month. Maybe you can play with me? David did not expect such a game from his father and almost laughed, then his father took out Blaze, began to move it and imitate her voice: — And I am Princess Blaze from a parallel universe. My universe was destroyed by the evil Doctor Nega and now I have nowhere to live. All the last hope is only for you, David. Then he began to do the same with Amy again. — Know, David, we are all your favorite toys and we all love you very much, no matter which of us and how often you play with us. We are always there when you need us and we all love you very much, because you are our most beloved owner. David began to smile, and his mother also joined the game, took Tails and put a paper bandage on his right eye, after which he began to portray him as a villain: — Muhahahaha. I'm the evil one-eyed mechanic Schnitzel. I hate feminists and will destroy all of you. — Oh no! Someone help us! — the father said, moving Amy and Blaise in his arms, as if they had said it at the same time. David couldn’t resist and still laughed loudly. He was amused by his parents' play and decided to join them. Finding Knuckles on the floor, the boy put his hat on him and joined the game. — But no, Schnitzel! I won't let you destroy anyone! — David said in Knuckles' voice. He liked this game, despite the fact that he did not know who feminists were. The game lasted for several hours. The boy was distracted from bad thoughts and had a wonderful time with his parents, who were also having fun and for a while remembered what they were like in their school years. When the game ended, mom looked at her watch. — It seems we're playing a little too hard. David, it's time for you to go to bed. — mom said and David went to wash himself. While their son was away, the parents decided to clean up and began putting the toys in the chest. The adults themselves were hysterical. They caught themselves thinking that they were also to blame for the disappearance of three hedgehogs. This game was the first in a long time. The last time they all played together was when David was very little. After this, family problems and other matters began. There wasn't enough time to play with my son. What about games? They didn’t even just pick up their favorite toys! If Lily took Shadow only to sew him up, then Ivan did not take his Sonic at all, because he was very tired after work. The parents were terribly ashamed of their toys and they wanted the trio to return safe and sound. — If you were alive, you would tell us what happened, right? — Ivan asked, looking at Amy Rose and putting her with the rest of the toys. David soon arrived and changed into his pajamas. — You don’t mind if they sleep with you today? — Lili asked, holding Tails and Knuckles in her arms as David lay down under the blanket. — Of course not. — the boy answered and the mother put the toys next to the child. Just like Sonic and Shadow lay before. — Son, don’t be upset! — the father reassured, approaching the bed. — I’m sure they’ll be back before the move. They miss you as much as you do. — But there are a couple of days left before the move. Are you sure they will make it? — Of course, they will! Moreover, we now have small problems with the car for moving and we will be able to leave only after everything gets better. So, we will have to live here for some more time. — the man answered, after which he saw a smile on his son’s face. Hope settled inside the boy. — Good night, David. — mom kissed the boy on the forehead. — Dad and I love you. — I love you too. — the child answered and closed his eyes. Dad turned off the light and left the room with his wife, grabbing his game disc. When the parents left and David fell asleep, the toys immediately came to life. Blaze stood on her stand and simply looked around the room, remembering the recent game with a smile. Tails and Knuckles also came to life and were quietly happy to be played with. Suddenly, Tails noticed that the door to the room was slightly open, and somewhere downstairs the voices of Lili and Ivan could be heard. The little fox silently climbed out of bed and headed towards the door. — Tails, where are you going? — Knuckles asked, noticing that his friend was leaving. — Don't worry Knuckles, I'll be back soon. — What if they notice you? — I'll be careful. — Well, I do not. I am going with you. — the echidna also got off the bed and went to his friend. Going out into the corridor, the toys realized that the voices were coming from the living room. The guys ended up on the steps of the stairs and hid behind the railing. — Honey, you and I have already examined everything. They are nowhere to be found. — Ivan said, trying to calm his wife, who was sitting on the sofa and holding back tears. — I know, Vanya, I know... If something happens to them, I won’t forgive myself! — especially Shadow... Ivan understood perfectly what his beloved was talking about. She made Shadow herself while still a schoolgirl, spending a lot of time and effort. At school, she tried not to show it to anyone, because on the very first day the children made her laugh, saying that this toy was better for scaring crows in the garden. Only then he didn’t laugh at the hedgehog, but rather praised his classmate. Only he played with her and Shadow. Only then did he show Lili his Sonic... Many years later, already adults, they joked that these hedgehogs brought them together. And this was partly true. The man even often felt how jealous his lady of his heart was for the plush hedgehog. It seemed to him that she devoted more time to the toy than to her own husband. From the outside, it seemed like the ravings of a madman. To be jealous of a person for a toy. But David's father liked this unspoken confrontation — “Shadow, where are you? Please return home with Sonic and Silver! Lili and David can’t live without you... I can’t live without you...” — the man said in his thoughts, perfectly understanding how important these toys are for his son and for his wife. How important these toys are to him. — Honey, we still have time. Let's look for them again. Maybe they are somewhere where we don't expect to see them at all. — said the father of the family, really ready to turn the whole house upside down, but to find those who were so dear to them. At this moment, Lili, who was quietly crying, looked at her husband, after which she hugged him and kissed him on the cheek. — Thank you. — Lili said, and then calmed down. After sitting a little more, the whole family went to bed. Luckily, they didn't notice Tails and Knuckles. The toys could not understand what they saw and heard. Sonic and Shadow were as dear to them as they were to David, despite the fact that the owners of these hedgehogs were already adults. The fox and the echidna had no choice but to return to their places until David noticed that they were missing. — “Shadow, come back to me! I miss!" — David’s mother mentally asked before falling asleep, hoping that her beloved hedgehog would be able to hear the request. No matter how strange it may sound, dad mentally asked Sonic for the same thing, because this blue hedgehog had been his favorite toy all his life.Chapter 9: Escape Attempt
November 22, 2023 at 6:02 AM
Silver and Sonic looked out of the room slightly and noticed that Andrew left Stephanie's room, and then went down the steps to the first floor without Shadow, but only her voice was heard in Stephanie's room:
— Yes? How interesting.
Silver and Sonic crept to that door and looked inside, and inside Stephanie was already playing with Shadow himself, as well as with her new doll, tea drinking.
— Would you like to have some tea, dear neighbor? Stephanie asks, holding a toy teapot in her hand and pretending to pour it into toy cups. Shadow himself was wearing a pink dress and a small blue hat with a flower.
— Ah! Shadow! — Sonic almost burned himself and Silver. Fortunately, the latter managed to cover his mouth with his only hand.
— How nice that you decided to visit us after all. What a wonderful hat you have, dear neighbor. It suits you very well. — Stephanie continued to play.
— How can we free him from there? — Silver thought, rubbing his chin with his hand.
— I think I have a plan, but it’s a little stupid. — the blue one answers. He actually had a plan. On the one hand, he really was stupid and could burn them down, but on the other hand, it could work.
— Take action! — Silver allowed and hid behind him, and Sonic, being behind the door, coughed a couple of times to the side and imitating a woman’s voice, began to call Stephanie:
— Stephanie! O-o, Stepha-a-anie-e-e!
— Mom? — she mistakenly decided that her mother had called. — Sorry, ladys, I'll be right back. — she apologized to Shadow, stood up and left the room. Black-scarlet didn’t come to life, he just fell head first on the table. — What is it, mom? Mom, where are you?
As Stephanie left her room, Sonic and Silver ran inside.
— Shadow! Hey Shadow, how are you? — Sonic asked, and Shadow immediately screamed for a second, raising his hands up and began to grind some heresy:
— Everything is lost! Everything is lost! Goodbye! Bye, happy!
— What's wrong with you, Shadow? — Silver was already afraid for him.
— Not long ago I was created on the ARC colony. I was a perfect form of life, and now I’m having a conversation and drinking I don’t know which cup of tea... — the black-and-scarlet answered smiling, picking up a toy cup and looking at the neighboring doll at the table, who waved her hand at the three hedgehogs in greeting. — With Antonio Jennifer and her little sister Gabby. — having finished, he grinned to the side.
— Uh... Shadow, I think you've already had enough tea for today. Let's go to. — says the blue one and takes the black-scarlet one by the hands, but he breaks free and, smiling, shouts:
— YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND???. DO YOU SEE THE HAT???.. Hm=m?.. I’m Mrs. Nasbit. — Having answered, he begins to laugh indecently and loudly, like crazy. Sonic grabbed Shadow by the shoulders and began to shake him.
— Come to your senses, Shadow! Stop this whole circus! — said an enraged Silver and slapped his plush comrade in the face, hoping to bring his feelings back. And it worked. Shadow froze, blinked a couple of times and shook his head, staring at the hat that Sonic pulled off his head.
— I. I... I Sorry, I... You’re right, I was just a little excited and that’s all... — he answered them and left the room with slow steps. — I . I can handle this... But... Tell me, the hat on my head didn’t look bad, right?.. Tell me honestly, that it suited me?.. The dress is too much, but the hat... — while he was explaining all this , he wasn't even paying attention and didn't notice that Stephanie had returned and noticed them. Even Sonic and Silver did not have time to pretend not to be alive, listening to the thoughtful Shadow. And when they already noticed someone’s legs next to Shadow, it was too late. — What? — he asked them, not understanding why they were looking at him with their mouths open and motionless, and even higher. Only Silver dared to lightly point his finger above him to make him turn around.
Black-scarlet, realizing what was happening, bulged his eyes, raised his head and saw that Stephanie herself was looking at them with bulging eyes, narrowed pupils and an open mouth, not even knowing how to react to what she saw. She essentially saw that they were alive and even heard that they could talk. Even Shadow himself didn’t know how to get out and all he could squeeze out of himself was:
— Uh... Hi. — he said the last, baring his teeth in a smile and slightly narrowing his stern voice to a woman’s.
Stephanie began to breathe nervously and it seemed that she was about to scream at the top of her lungs.
— NO-PLEASE-DON'T-SCREAM!!! — Sonic shouted very quickly, stretching out his arms and stopping in place. But strangely enough, Stephanie stopped at her last breath and didn’t even breathe. — Please!.. Don’t scream!.. Don’t give us away!.. We won’t harm you... I know it’s hard for you to believe, but we really are all alive... And we don’t like it when your little brother blows us up, but even more so it breaks... But we beg you... Don’t tell anyone that we are all alive!..
Stephanie didn’t answer, she just slowly turned back and, finding herself facing the side of the stairs, ran downstairs. Fortunately, silently and without shouting.
— Well, Shadow, have you finished your game? — Sonic scolded him.
— Stop quarreling, let's run! — Silver calmed them down and ran with them back to Oscar’s room, locking himself there and hiding.
Stephanie went downstairs and ran into the kitchen, accidentally bumping into her grandfather.
— Hush, hush, Stephanie! Where is the fire, what kind of panic? — he asked her.
— There... There... T-toys! They are alive! — the girl was in real panic. She chattered very quickly, without having time to catch her breath.
— Baby, calm down. Tell me in order what happened. — Andrew was shocked by his granddaughter’s words, but decided to listen to her.
— I... I left the room because my mother called me. When I came to her, it turned out that she did not call me. We decided that I had heard something and I went to my place. But... — Stephanie fell silent, as the fear of what she saw did not let her go.
— What happened next? Honey, don't be afraid! If anything, I will help you. — the old man tried to calm him down. He was really wondering what could have scared the child so much. He even began to think that this was Oscar's next trick.
— When I got up, I saw the doll you brought me talking to some other toys! They didn't notice me right away...
— Wait, wait, dear! Are you talking about the hedgehog I brought you? — Andrew fell into a stupor for a moment. He couldn't believe what he heard from Stephanie, but at the same time he remembered the time when he was talking to Shadow and noticed a tear on his face.
— Yes! It was he! And there were two more hedgehogs with him! One is blue and the other is white! You better see it for yourself! — said the girl, and grabbed her grandfather’s hand and ran towards her room. Andrew could barely keep up with her, tripping over his own feet. When they reached that place, the toys were no longer there.
— They were here, grandfather! I definitely saw them. — Stephanie said, trying to understand where they had gone. Andrew, having added that it somehow ended up under his bedside table in his room, that he himself almost really cried and, in addition, was with two more people like him and then ran away somewhere, he realized that everything toys and even those that he may have made are also alive. This means that they, too, quite possibly feel pain, can cry and even sympathize with all of us, just as that black hedgehog sympathized with him. This didn’t frighten him at all, but at that time Stephanie kept looking for those three toys in her room, but could not find them. — Honestly, grandfather. I'm not crazy at all. I really saw them. They were alive.
— I believe you, Stephanie. — he reassured her. — But there’s nothing wrong with that!
— Really? — the girl did not believe that her grandfather believed her words. Her parents often said that she was just fantasizing, but they believed her younger brother without a second thought. As a result, most of the arguments were her fault.
— Certainly! — Andrew was inspired, realizing that his relationship with his granddaughter was improving. — Toys, just like us, can feel, breathe, walk and talk! They only do this when no one is looking at them.
— Why? — Stephanie wondered why the toys didn’t move in the presence of people.
— I do not know for sure. Most likely this is their secret and they do not want to show themselves to us, because we will begin to study them and soon people would not give the toys peace. Toys also want to go about their business without the constant supervision of their owners. Also, perhaps they are afraid that they will stop playing with them when they find out about their secret. — Grandfather concluded, after which Oscar’s older sister again began to shake with fear.
— Grandfather... But that blue hedgehog asked me not to tell anyone that they were alive... — the girl’s cheeks burned with shame that she did not keep her word. — It turns out that I let those three down...
— Don't be upset. You didn't do this on purpose. You were very scared. — Andrew tried to assure. — I’m sure that they are not offended by you, because they saw how scared you were. Let's do this. This will be our secret and you don’t tell it to anyone! Neither parents nor brother. Agreed?
— Fine. — the girl herself didn’t want to say that to her brother. He would come up with even more cruel abuses of toys.
— Okay, now let's try to understand where the hedgehogs went. It's too dangerous for them here. — the toymaker said seriously and began to look around in search of some clues, mentally hoping that none of them came across to Oscar or Hurricane. Soon he noticed fluff on the floor. Most of the fluff scattered in different directions, but one small chain stretched straight into the bully's room.
Notes:
From the co-author: By the way, Lily’s phrase that the game disc may not work due to old age may not be true. I've been running some old game discs on my new computer and they run great. Most old games run smoothly on modern systems (except those programmed for a 32-bit system).
