Notes:
With this conclusion to the first part, this work is complete. I don't know yet whether I'll publish a new part here, but we'll see. Thanks to everyone who read this work and left their theories in the comments.
The chapter begins with Teruko and Fukuchi. As I mentioned in the theory about the future of the Bloodhounds, Teruko has become their new leader. And since it was his dying wish, she will most likely fulfill it and remain in the squad.
The consequences of the Decay of the Angels incident for the Agency, first and foremost, for me personally, were quite expected. Given the pages that described them as terrorists, the pursuit of her, which ultimately failed, of course, they will still be considered criminals, various proceedings and investigations will ensue, which will shut down their activities indefinitely.
For the revived Guild, the Agency’s support also had the expected effect. Plus, Francis was still not exactly on the top list of the Japanese elite and for the Ango department. I personally feel incredibly sorry for Francis. Just when he’d found new motivation and was once again consumed by the desire to reclaim his wife and daughter, that goal was shattered once again, and he and the others were forced to go on the run.
And John finally made his move and seemed to have decided to commit a crime against Francis, or rather, kidnap him. It’s unclear why? There’s no point in it, and he wanted to see Francis fail, which is exactly what he got.
It’s also possible that Francis’s hiding place was provided by John himself, who was convinced to help thanks to Lovecraft. It’s not a given, of course, but it’s certainly possible, so it’s not worth considering John as the kidnapper of his former leader. We’re simply waiting for Part 2 to confirm these theories and Francis’s next move: finding a new incentive to save his family and whether all the Guild members will be with him.
The second, more tragic consequence was suffered by the members of the Port Mafia. They, like the new Guild, are facing enormous changes; their losses in this incident were far greater, which, of course, will prompt enemy organizations to take advantage of this and attack them. In the near future, their efforts will be devoted to fighting and attempting to defend themselves against them.
But what was sad about the Port Mafia episode was that we weren’t shown Higuchi, Gin, and Tachihara, not even a glimpse of what had happened to them, where they were, leaving their fate open-ended. I really hope they’ll be shown to us right away in the second part.
And so we reach the final frames. Surely I wasn’t the only one who felt that tiny fragment of a page drew Atsushi in, just like a Poe book does? But Poe’s book can pull not only the person holding it, but also someone standing very close to them, and Kyoka wasn’t pulled in…
And here’s the question: why was Atsushi pulled into this piece of page, and why did 18th-19th-century London appear inside? They’re blank pages, without any content.
The answer to the first question could be exactly what Fyodor was talking about, calling Atsushi the book’s bookmark and his unknown connection to it. Another theory, more popular on Telegram among some Russian fans, is that Atsushi is a creation of the book, but it’s unknown who, how, and why, say, created him. Since this is just a theory, we’ll leave it for the future.
The second option is that it could be a memory of the book’s creator, of the moment when it was created, how it was created—it was probably created in London of that century—and he decided to share it with Atsushi. Also, I’d like to point out that the man who woke Atsushi was dressed like Natsume Soseki and looked very similar. This made me think that Natsume-sensei really is connected to the book somehow, since we were once told that his exact age is unknown, that he knows a lot about something, hence the idea that he knows exactly where the book is, or is guarding it himself…
Let’s move on to the question of Dazai and Sigma’s fate after the battle and why they weren’t shown. In Dazai’s case, it’s clear to all of us what happened to him. He escaped from Merco, and the Japanese government knows about his past, so it’s obvious they’ll be looking for him. And because of this, Dazai will go on the run. Ango won’t be able to help him for a reason—he works for the government. If he helps him, and they find out, he’ll be considered a criminal.
Sigma is most likely on the run with Dazai. After all, he’s part of the decay of the angels, and let’s not forget that he’s been charged with the casino, so it’s best for him to go into hiding too.
We can’t rule out one more thing. A deal between Fukuzawa and Mori, about an agency member joining the mafia. What if that person is Dazai?
Think about it: if he really has gone into hiding, then when everything calms down, people won’t trust him. Few will want him in the agency, and the government won’t leave him alone.
The only way for him to somehow follow the events that follow is to return to the mafia. But knowing why Dazai left the mafia, the reason, and his hatred for Mori, this is impossible; it’s just a theory.
The chapter left us all with a ton of questions, and to get answers, we can only wait for the release of the second part of the manga.
