Chapter 1. A typical day.
November 24, 2023 at 6:32 AM
Sitting on the
couch, Soulless sat drinking whiskey and reading a book, when the book was
finished, he got up, went to the window and, taking a bottle of water, began to
water the only flower in the apartment. After the recent events, he left for
another country and began to live, as he himself says: “For himself.”
It was an ordinary day, and while watching the news, there was a knock at the
door. Soulless didn’t open it because he wasn’t expecting anyone, but someone
really wanted to get inside, so he went to the door and looked through the
peephole of the door and was extremely surprised, out of curiosity he opened the
door and went to the sofa. A girl came into the apartment, she went into the
hall and stood opposite the Soulless.
-Hmm. I didn’t
expect to see you here. Soulless said.
- You’ve been hard
to find. The girl answered.
- Why did you
come?
The girl hesitated.
-Well… In
general… Come back.
-Where to?
-To us.
- Corpses are not
returned.
“Oh, yes,
you’re dead.
- How did you find
it?
-Accidentally.
- You don’t know
how to lie.
“All right,
all right, I was looking for you almost as soon as you went missing.
- I’m dead.
- You and death
are incompatible.
“I’m mortal.
The girl did not
answer.
- We need help.
-Help? You have an
agreement that the gangs help each other.
-Clans.
“Are you
clans now?” Soulless said, finishing his whiskey.
-Yes. Do you still
drink whiskey?
-Yes. Soulless
said and filled his glass.
- Listen, we
really have problems, big problems.
- Not interesting.
-As usual.
- There’s nothing
interesting on TV, so you can tell me, but not for long.
-Thank you. So we
have big problems. After the war, we signed contracts, but not so long ago the
Cleaners appeared.
-Who are they?
“The police
decided to take a serious look at all of us, gathered a council of all
countries and formed a squad to eliminate us.
- Because you
decided to get into other countries as well.
-Yes…
-Farther.
“We fought
back, and they tempered their ardor, but they still sometimes kill us in
squares. And they copy you.
- How’s that?
- Katanas,
pistols, are dressed in black suits, with white shirts underneath.
“Katanas?”
From the Special Forces?
-Yes.
-Hmm.
“And there’s
nothing we can’t do about them.
“What do I
have to do with it?”
“You’re a
soulless mother!” You can put down the units alone! The girl shouted.
“I’m not a
hero or Prometheus.
- Rose is dead, Monocle
is in a fool! Everyone is going crazy! Nat rules, but he’s on edge!
-Dead?
-Yes! She was
killed in the last major skirmish, and at least you don’t care about henna! As
you sat with a stony face, so you sit!
“Why do you
want me to start crying?” She knew what she was getting into. Everyone who
didn’t have time to leave will die.
- Yes, when we
faced the Reds, we lost so much!
-Yes I know.
“And you fell
it anyway!”
-Left.
-No! You’ve dumped
it, but for what?!
- I’ve
accomplished my goal.
“Did you find
the cargo?!”
-Yes.
“And what was
there, that you were sitting here and living an ordinary life?!”
-I.
-A what?!
“I was there.
“You’re
crazy!” Not normal!
“And you came
to the psycho.
-Yes!
- Vika, did you
come to persuade me to come back?
- Not to persuade,
but to ask!
- And it looks
like you’re persuading.
- I signed a
contract that I will help you!
-Them.
“And our
treaty?!”
“You’ve done
it, it’s not valid.
-Creature! What do
you want?! Territory, take half of it! Take as much money as you want! Authorities?!
What?!
-No problem. I
died and retired.
“And what
does a retired murderer do?!”
-Live.
“Do you
live?!” And I thought you existed!
- I’m alive now.
I’m still in college, doing what I want, having a flower, sitting and reading,
drinking whiskey, and I don’t owe anyone anything.
“You’ve put
so many people in for the fucking load, and now you’re pretending it never
happened!”
-Yes.
- Ask for whatever
you want! Just come back!
-It’s a deal?
-Yes!
“Then I want
nothing, but I’m not coming back either.”
“you!”
Vika turned around
and left the apartment, slamming the door.
- Hmm. Soulless
said and took a sip of his whiskey, then turned on the TV and watched the news.
Vika was walking
down the street and thinking, when suddenly the phone rang.
-Yes?
- Hello, Vika, do
I have an essay on law? And then I have to hand it over tomorrow — It was
Mimosa.
-Abstract… I’m
busy right now, let me come and throw it to you.
“All right,
hurry up, or I’ll have to redo it.”
-Okay.
Vika hung up the
phone and sat down on the nearest bench.
- What is it all
for? — After these words, Vika began to cry.
-I… I can’t…
Why are you such a bitch…
In the meantime,
Soulless was standing in the kitchen and preparing dinner. When he had finished
cooking, he returned to the couch. No sooner had he opened a new book than the
door opened and Vika appeared on the threshold again. Soulless paid no
attention to her and began to read. Vika silently approached the Soulless One
and fell to her knees, and the tears began to flow even harder. Soulless
continued to read.
- Y-Come back…
- On my knees,
even.
-Yes… Ask for
whatever you want.
- Get interested.
- Me, we’ll give
it all away. Come back.
- You don’t have
anything. If you’re back like that, then it’s gotten worse.
-Yes…
“I have
nothing to ask for. Ask the Bee for help.
- She can’t, there
are problems there too.
- Because you have
put down roots in other countries.
-Yes…
“I don’t need
to help you. If you’d like, you can turn me in to the Cleaners.
-You are welcome…
No one else.
Soulless took off
his glasses and put down his book.
- Vika, you have a
nine-round pistol with you, it’s enough for me. Kill me, fulfill your wish, and
leave as I do.
-I… I can’t… I
can’t kill you!
- You have a
choice. Interest me or kill me.
-Interest?
-Think.
Soulless got up
and went out onto the balcony. From the balcony there was a view of the sea,
Soulless took a pack of cigarettes from the table and, taking out one, lit it.
- I’ve decided.
Soulless put out
his cigarette and went back to the living room, sat down on the sofa and said:
-And?
- Close your eyes,
I can’t kill you while you’re watching.
Soulless closed
his eyes silently and heard the rustling of clothes, then something pressed
against him. Soulless opened his eyes, in front of him was Vicky’s face, she
was naked.
-Shut up. She
said, then kissed him.
Vika was lying,
clinging to the Soulless.
-Come back.
- I said to
interest me, not jump on me.
-I hate you.
- At the same
time, you are snuggling up to me.
“You’re
soulless scum.
-Yes.
- Put so many
people to your goal and leave.
-Yes.
- Why and why?
- It’s simple.
- That’s not the
answer.
-Answer.
-No.
- As you know.
“Will you
come back?”
“You couldn’t
get me interested.
“So your best
people are dead and you’re not interested in a room with white walls?”
“We’re all
going to end up there or there sooner or later.
-Monster.
-Yes.
Vika got up and
began to get dressed, after which she headed for the exit.
-Wait.
-A what?
- At the
nightstand, open the top drawer.
Vika opened the
top drawer of the bedside table.
-Opened.
“Take my dog
tag from there.”
Vika took out the
Soulless Token.
“Do you keep
them?”
- As you can see.
“You didn’t
give them away until you died.
-…
-Finally?
-Yes.
-Got it. Vika said
and left.
Soulless lay down
for a while, then got up, dressed, and went out onto the balcony. As soon as he
lit a cigarette, his phone rang. He went back into the living room and picked
up the phone.
-Hello.
-Hello! How are
you doing?
-That’s all right.
I study, I eat, I sleep.
- Typical student.
-Aha. And how are
you?
- Yes, it will. As
long as the money is there, everything is fine.
- Ha, I’m glad.
What about language acquisition?
“Damn it’s
going to break your leg in that English!”
- Where are you
now?
- Your mother
wanted to fly to Italy, now we explain on our fingers what we want.
-As usual.
-But.
- What’s the news?
They say that some gangs have appeared.
“Who knows,
no one has been seen.
- Well, you’re
more careful there.
-Naturally.
“All right,
I’ll go get ready for tomorrow, and you rest there.”
“Well, at
your expense.”
-Naturally.
- Okay, come on.
“Bye-bye,
Dad.”
Soulless put down
the phone.
