Chapter 2. The note.
"Oh, shit," came from the other side of the booth. Through the crack between the door and the wall, I see a girl washing her face, trying to stop the blood—Damn you!
I try to be as quiet as possible, not to show my presence. But, of course, the situation was against me. Bang! A pen falls out of my shirt pocket (and why did I take it with me to the toilet at all?!). How in general can a future thief be so careless? I tensed and listened. The man at the sink also quieted down, abruptly turning to face the booths.
— Damn it! it was obvious in her voice that she did not expect to meet someone who could find her in such a position.
I froze, sitting on the toilet, moving as far as possible away from the gap in which I could be noticed. I heard the water tap stop bubbling on the other side, the steps went towards the exit from the toilet, the door slammed, and I was left alone again. I moved. I don't know why I was so afraid to give myself away. It just seemed like I shouldn't have seen it...
I opened the stall door a crack, walked over to the sink. There are still purple marks on it. I washed them off with water, well, just in case. I don't know, I don't like to make things up, but... this situation scared me. Maybe I should have gone out and asked if everything was okay. Although most likely my stormy fantasy, hungry for criminal conspiracies, just made it up. Most likely, some regular nerd who studied the paragraph all night was so worried when answering a stupid test that her nose bled. Yes, I have such ideas about the nerds, sorry.
I washed my hands, looked at the phone, there were messages from Lizzie. Well, from the one with whom I had to do the lab today.
"Are you coming soon?"
"Mr. Chen asks everyone to get together"
"He wants everyone to talk about their contribution to the work"
"I hope your part of the work is ready?"
"Are you kidding?"
"Well, why did they put me with you?"
Pf, you'll think. I never promised that I would try for the sake of biology. Or for any other lesson I don't need. Okay, I think it's time to run.
Near the exit from the toilet, my gaze caught on something lying on the floor. When I came in here, it definitely wasn't here. It was a folded piece of paper in a cage. Hoping they were answers to a biology test, I picked it up.
"We were caught because of you, I knew I shouldn't have taken you with us. I'm sorry, but you have to pay, you owe us the whole amount, well, or you can pay in some other way... it is unlikely that you have money, decide for yourself"
I reread it again, delving into the essence. Well, who's going to tell me what I'm thinking now? Yes, this girl is definitely connected with something criminal, and now she has big problems. Of course, it's strange that the messenger decided to leave the letter in paper rather than electronic form, but maybe to some extent it's even clever - it's harder to prove later.
I rolled up the paper and put it in my jeans pocket. A lot of guesses were spinning in my head. Just give me a reason! I hurried back to class so as not to get into trouble, but my thoughts were not about biology at all.
