Chapter 17

Settings
More than once Moritz left the room only under the cover of darkness. He didn’t want to shine too much light: Moritz tracked the movement of trains, passing by each one, standing next to the main doors and looking out for Paul, but the enemy did not appear. Where is Paul? And will he come at all? Every time his heart pounded and reverberated in his ears, Moritz felt that he had lost, and not only because he was on the other side: Moritz knew that he did not want to accept all the battles. Moritz accepted this. The man did not want to participate in the war or see it. He was tired of sitting for a long time and waiting for something. He just couldn’t stand it. Moritz, by his nature, did not like to delay any matter; he always decided everything quickly and in an organized manner and in the shortest possible time, and did everything that depended on him. He had a habit of controlling everything, which constantly bothered him. But here the situation was different: the meeting did not depend on him, and he had to wait. He could not leave everything to chance and, in order to somehow entertain himself, going out into the street in the morning, he looked at the exhausted, barely alive soldiers of the German army, giving up morally. They couldn’t find a place for themselves and didn’t know who to take their anger out on. They threw themselves at each other, and this is where animal behavior came out. Moritz observed a beautiful picture: people retreat from their own high values and standards in order to survive. How far can a person go when he is in a critical situation? Probably to go down to the very roots of his essence and remember that he has it. People have always driven themselves into rules and norms, because they knew: the animal essence, if not kept under strict control, will always take over. Hunger, sex, sleep — all these are manifestations of nature that a person wants to suppress. But he will never be able to do it. In moments of despair, a person enters into battle with himself, and it is up to you whether you win or lose. Having gone down to the street and breathed in the fresh air, he arrived at the station, sat down and waited, knowing that Paul was supposed to arrive today. Definitely. Paul is not a coward like Moritz. And Paul, above all these squabbles, always found something beautiful in everything, no matter where he was. Moritz was always a mischievous person in their company, who found something to have fun and how to defuse the situation. They have a good team, but all good things come to an end sooner or later. *** 1942 — Moritz, what are you doing? Get down immediately! — Rudolf shouted to the young man standing at the very edge of the bow of the ship. — Don’t want! It’s so fresh here! Rudolf, better come to me, there is such a beautiful view here. — Moritz, you know, God forbid Paul sees this. Do you want to get it from him again like last time? — How boring you all are! — Moritz got down and walked up to Rudolf. — But you are very cheerful with us. — Why are you discussing so heatedly, even without me? — Paul slowly walked towards his comrades. — You came at the right time, we are just bombarding Rudolf with questions. Tell me, if you have to choose between the two of us who to give to the enemy, who will you choose? — the question shocked not only Paul, but also Rudolf. — So, let’s stop this conversation now. Firstly, this definitely won’t happen, and secondly… I will perfectly preserve my team, every single one of them. “This doesn’t happen,” Rudolph looked with regret. — Well, the three of us will definitely stay, where would I go without you? — Paul looked at Moritz and Rudolf, they were satisfied with the answer. — Moritz, don’t you have anything to do? If so, go check the boxes with mines. Paul patted the guy on the shoulder, and he went to the boxes with his head down. *** “Let’s stay together,” “Where would I go without you?” — the remarks emerged one after another, and Moritz was driven into memories. Everything turned out to be a lie. He was unable to save either him or Rudolph then. Fury boiled in his blood again, and Moritz looked at the carriage of the train that had just arrived. Mostly women and children came out. But Moritz definitely managed to catch his eye on the familiar gait. He is here. There can be no doubt. The time has come. Moritz stood up, straightened his clothes and, watching him, turned his back so that he would not even recognize him. Now is not the time for them to meet. Moritz closes his eyes, throws his head back and lights a cigarette. The pistol has one cartridge. This time he won’t miss. Moritz follows Paul as he leaves the station and sees a strange picture: he is not alone. Another person is watching Paul. Damn, how could Moritz not have thought of it — the Germans. But how do they know? However, this is not so important. The main thing this time is not to miss and get out of here as quickly as possible. The air is filled with death and danger. Julian sits one and a half meters from Moritz and watches his victim. Everyone got together and arrived at the meeting place.
