Chapter 11

Settings
Julian stood in the office covered in sweat, drenched in cold sweat. What he experienced in a week is inexplicable: a tribunal, a cell, a cooperation agreement, the Gestapo. How did it happen that he, thinking about his own death, remained alive again? He knew that he would never leave this world until he used his full potential and gave it something of himself. The universe rests on this: everyone gives something to this world as much as they can, and then dies and is reborn. This is the law. He was never the first, much less the best. He always became the best for himself; others interested him little. And for what? Worrying about the opinion of a person whose name you don’t even know and don’t think about? Why do people, vainly knocking on doorsteps, try to prove to someone how great they are and that they are the best in their business? Because of inner emptiness and inferiority? Or maybe because of uncertainty? Or maybe because of ignorance of your calling in your life? He now stands before a man whose power and power are breathtaking and develop into a great desire to imitate him or to be in his shadow. It was he who pulled him out of the bottom, where he fell because of his own pride and unwillingness to obey the system to which he once obeyed, being blinded, like many. “Julian Fir, I read your file,” the man comes up and sits opposite him. “And I’m surprised how easily you got off with jail time and a court martial.” In a good way, you need to be shot. “You didn’t just get me out of prison?” — Julian looked at the man who was turning and turning the pages of his file. — Yes, for a reason. I must tell you that you are very young and understand that your life depends only on me. I had to deal with you so that you could come out and serve me, so you go on a killing spree. The murder of this Moritz Bauner. You can learn more about the case using this folder. — the man held out the file, and the interlocutor accepted it. Opening the binding, he was surprised that everything fit on one sheet, which was barely half filled. Noticing the reaction, the man continued: “As you can already understand, we don’t have a lot of information, and it’s outdated.” He is a traitor and should be destroyed as soon as possible to prevent another case, but this is not your task, which means you should not know the details. Julian read the information carefully. He served, like him, in the navy, but was declared dead after the sinking. Discovered two weeks ago, working for the British. So many questions and so few answers. He went over to the enemy’s side for a reason: apparently, they also saved his life and promised to forget about his past, promised immunity. What a corrupt person… Although who wouldn’t want to save their own life? Everything, and it doesn’t matter what you have to pay for it. “But when I carry out the order, they will shoot me as unnecessary.” I understand that you need a person whom you will keep on a short leash through manipulation, and then, when you don’t need him, you will kill him. The interlocutor shook his head negatively. “You don’t understand too much, Julian.” I won’t kill you. For what? You can teach me as much as I can teach you. Besides, you will be useful to me many more times, and you will have to change your job. But you will serve the country. Isn’t that why you joined the navy? “I don’t think you need to know the reason for my joining the army.” I’ll just say that I didn’t do it just for myself — a lot of people were involved in this — but now it doesn’t matter at all. — Do you think so? I have always been convinced that only if a person has meaning can he move forward. No education, no thirst for power can move a person forward if he does not have a goal where to transform all his energy, all his ideas. Only the goal that a person has decided to bring to life will help him move. — Are purpose and meaning the same thing for you? The question forced me to shut up and think, the silence was oppressive. They couldn’t bluff their answers to each other. — I think yes. They lie on the same plane for me. I hope my answer helps you complete the task, Julian. “Yes, of course,” the guy left the office, clearly realizing that he could not kill people: the best in a person, even towards an enemy, was too deeply embedded in him. He never understood why all this. For the sake of dominance? But the more you ask, the less you get. You must be able to be happy with what you have and not jump in over your head. He was a lot of places before the war when he was little. He is only twenty-five at the moment. Maybe he met the enemies that he was ordered to kill, but now, because of his uniform and hatred, he won’t be able to tell. Moritz. Yes, many people remembered him after his false, as it now turned out, death. He was revered and followed by example, he was a great guy who dreamed about a lot, and also madly wanted freedom and no limits in money. How has the person he was about to kill changed? And is his life worth as much as the life of the one he kills? How everything has changed: Moritz was once his idol, but now he has become his enemy. The world has turned from art into a huge black funnel, absorbing all the good, giving out only hatred. When did people come to power who have nothing and nowhere else to realize themselves? When and at what point did humanity go wrong? And at what point did the death of one person become less important than the death of another? Maybe people appointed themselves the crowns of nature early on? Maybe they became proud early on that they have a brain that creates and creates? Perhaps this is, in fact, our greatest strength — and our greatest flaw, which will ultimately lead to our destruction? *** It’s cold, windy and raining, which hasn’t stopped for a week. Moritz, all on edge, destroys and rushes inside, but is cold and calm on the outside. How could he fail like that? He is a fool who arrogantly decided that he can do anything. He completely forgot where he started after being captured. He then told everything he knew. They kept him for six months until they made a deal: he would serve and carry out tasks. He promised that he would serve faithfully, although he planned to leave or run away at the first opportunity, but when he realized that revenge was possible, he changed his mind. Why not? Why not serve the enemy and save yourself at least for a short time? The war is moving towards its end, and staying away from the horror that will befall Germany and the Allies is pleasant and interesting. Moritz never considered himself a traitor. His father said: “Son, where there is big money and benefits, you should go without hesitation, and it doesn’t matter where it is or what principles you have to step on.” And Moritz always acted according to this rule: he lied, pretended, but always looked for a profitable place for himself where his life would be saved. He was ready for anything, and fate did not turn its back on him. Therefore, even now, smoking a cigarette and looking at the dullness surrounding him, he tried to be realistic, but look more positively. His next meeting with Paul will be his last, and at the same time he will kill his girlfriend. This is not important for him, but it is a restoration of balance: then he not only ruined Moritz, but also a couple of young boys. The man knew: he always has a purpose from above, namely, to maintain balance in the Universe. He considered Paul to be evil, just as he considered himself not exactly good, but a defector who could serve on both sides. His soul was neither white nor black: it was gray. Sometimes more black, sometimes more white. Sometimes it’s just cloudiness in the soul, sometimes it’s raining and thunderstorms. Throwing away the cigarette, he headed into the sun, humming a song as old as time.
